Anne La Tene
Basic Character Information
Forename: Anne
Middle Name/Initial:
Surname: La Tene
Epithet: "Iron Fencer" Maquet
Birthdate: October 1807
Gender: Female
Species/Tribe: Human
Faction: Revolutionary
Profession: Blacksmith
Physical Appearance
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 207 lbs
Hair Style: Shaggy pixie cut
Hair Color: Purple
Eye Color: Hazel
Scars: Tiny scars from cuts and burns on her hands, and a large burn scar in the upper middle of her back
Gear: Anne usually wears her simple blacksmith garb - a grey or blue sleeved or sleeveless shirt with a leather apron over the top, brown carpenter pants, a brown toolbelt, and tough black boots. A unique accessory she tends to wear is a silver pair of safety goggles with tinted lenses. She often wears these on her forehead. She is almost never seen without a forging hammer, which can double as a weapon. When armed, her black-sheathed sword is on her left side.
Her public Revolutionary persona, "Iron Fencer" Maquet, dresses a bit differently. Rather than the usual attire - or, if in a hurry, over the usual attire - she wears a large brown hooded robe, and a riveted iron mask that covers everything except her eyes. The area over the mouth has air holes in it. In this alter-ego, she carries her blade at her right side.
Her sword of choice is a rapier that she had forged herself. The blade is about 42" long, made with ladder pattern welding. The handle is leather-wrapped, and has a copper-gold alloy basket hilt. This basket hilt is a slightly twisted honeycomb pattern. The pommel is round and elongated, made of dark steel with copper-gold stripes. She disguises the hilt and pommel with a rounded brass plate with the New Revolutionary Army logo etched into it. She attaches this on the side, hiding the true design of the rapier from some angles and from a distance.
Description: Anne is a hard-working blacksmith, and it shows. She is quite strong, and is especially muscular in her arms, though even her legs are toned from lifting and carrying heavy objects. She has somehow developed both a tan and a lot of freckles. Her hands are lightly scarred from working with sharp metal and flame.
Anne's purple pixie cut hair is usually kept out of her bright hazel eyes by something, whether it is her goggles or "Iron Fencer Maquet's" mask. Her facial features are somewhat angular, with well-defined cheekbones, v-shaped chin, sharp eyebrows, and a straight, narrow "greek nose."
The Past
Main Traits: Calm, thoughtful, quiet determination, caring, secretive, proud
Likes: Bladesmithing, the New Revolutionary Army, "True justice", occasional light gambling, working out
Dislikes: The World Government, injustice, "Fake justice," mice and rats
Unique laugh: "Hnhnhn..."
Hometown: Flevance, North Blue, though she has not been there in quite some time.
Personality: Anne La Tene has two personalities: the one she uses when dealing with both the public and the New Revolutionary Army at the same time - or at least thinks someone might be looking or listening in - and her true personality.
When Anne is allowed to just be herself, she can be quite caring and friendly. She often puts others before herself, and worries about others. However, she is not overly emotional about this, instead remaining calm and thoughtful. Her happiness is a soft smile, her anger is tranquil fury. She hardly ever lets her guard down, becoming friends quickly but trusting said friends slowly.
There are three exceptions to her somehow soft yet firm quietness. She occasionally likes to gamble with low stakes, liking the challenge of relying at least partially on randomness when she usually prefers self-order. Sometimes she lets a little excitement leak out. She also gets in the zone when doing the one thing she loves the most - working as a blacksmith. Instead of thinking and analyzing everything, she often works with intuition, "letting the steel shape itself" and "finding the form it wishes to be". Finally, she cannot stand mice or rats. Far from a phobia, they actually trigger a rare anger response from her. While the World Government is her biggest enemy, rodents are a close second.
When there is Revolutionary work to be done with those she doesn't trust or where she might be seen doing so - such as joining a battle - she has an alter-ego known as "Iron Fencer Maquet." While she is normally very calm and thoughtful, this other identity takes it to another level. She lowers her voice and becomes almost monotone, showing almost no emotion whatsoever. While not ruthless and bloodthirsty, she acts cold, calculating, and efficient. While she is still caring and compassionate, she will pretend not to be. She will find pragmatic rationalizations for any aid she gives that does not seem necessary.
- History:
Anne La Tene was born to Adena La Tene nee Clovis and her husband Edouarde in Flevance. Adena was a blacksmith of some renown, respected for her unorthodox techniques and abilities to use materials other blacksmiths would or could not. Edouarde was an expert swordsman who once drive to adventure of a pirate but the deepest respect for the Marines and the law, and had settled down in marriage and fatherhood. Together they made an excellent team. Adena would forge weapons, and Edouarde would test them and make suggestions.
As Anne grew up, both parents tried to teach her their respective skills. She quickly picked up the basics, but was much better at forging than fighting, and was not reaching the level of expertise of either parent. Her parents were not disappointed though, as she was still growing up, even at the age of 16. She had time.
At least, that is what they all thought, until a World Noble came to Adena's forge with a request and a rare metal. He wanted her to turn the Soul Iron he brought into a perfect blade. Soul iron was a beautiful mineral that shined and sparkled in such a way it practically glowed. Rumors were that it had a soul within it, and if you were to forge a blade out of it, the blade would grant amazing powers. It would extend the wielder's life, make them "powerful" and have a "great destiny", and would repel or catch evil spirits.
However, these rumors were just that - rumors. Soul iron was impossible to forge a blade with, and Adena told the Noble this. However, he refused to take 'no' for an answer. He left the soul iron at the shop, and told her that if she did not make the sword in three days, he would consider it theft.
As Adena said, this was impossible. At the end of the three days, the Noble had returned to see the soul iron untouched. He was furious that they had disrespected him and refused his completely reasonable request of making a masterpiece of a sword in three days out of an impossible material. He had all three of them taken away to be used as slaves. Adena went with him so that she would be forced to either make the blade or do undignified, near-torturous word. Anne did not know what happened to her dad, even years later. And Anne herself went to another family to serve in the hot sun during the day, and locked in a rat-infested basement at night.
It had been two years since that day, and she had given up hope. However, brave Revolutionaries had found her and freed her, taking them with her. After a month dealing with her trauma, she had regained a part of her soul that was chipped away by despair. In order to repay them, to someday save her parents, and to make sure this would one day never happen again to anyone, she joined the New Revolutionary Army, and trained the skills that had rusted in captivity. Soon she even surpassed where she was before this ever happened, and she had even began to catch up to where her parents' skills once were.
However, before she would enter the field with any Revolutionaries, she had to make sure her parents and former friends she left behind would not be punished for her actions. If anyone found out who she was, they might try to get to her through them. Thus she forged an iron mask, and along with it, an alias - "Iron Mask" Maquette.
Someday, Anne La Tene or "Iron Mask" Maquette would free her parents. Whether through violent revolution, or by perfecting her forging techniques to make the impossible soul iron sword to bargain with. Either way, her goals were clear. Save her parents, and help free the world.

[approve]I did correct your surname field from "La Tenne" to "La Tene" since that seemed to be the correct spelling based on other usages.[/approve]
