Ickarus "Featherfoot"/"Waxhead" Helion
Basic Character Information
Forename: Ickarus
Middle Name/Initial: N/A
Surname: Helion
Epithet: He wants to be known as "Featherfoot," but his enemies insist on calling him "Waxhead." (His allies also call him this, but in a more endearing fashion.)
Birthdate: July 21, 1805
Gender: Male
Species/Tribe: Skyfolk (specifically, Skypiean), but he does not have wings.
Faction: Pirate
Profession: Inventor and welder. He excels in the art of technical metalworking, which proves useful in the upkeep of his armored ship, Candlelight. Some say he built Candlelight alone in under a week, though he has never confirmed or denied the claim.
Physical Appearance
Height: 6'3"
Weight: He doesn't check often, but he reckons he's about 185 lbs / 84 kg
Hair Style: Matted, unruly, and in some places waxy. Uniform length around the whole head. There is one long strand that refuses to sit down.
Hair Color: Greyish white
Eye Color: Dark grey
Scars: Two long parallel scars that run on either side of his backbone
Gear: Outside of battle, Ickarus wears tattered loose shorts with burn marks. They are so matted with grease, oil, and dirt you can't tell what color they were originally He has a distaste for shoes, but will wear socks (only when it is cold out). He often leaves his welding goggles on his forehead accidentally. Ickarus has a very large brown fur coat that falls almost to his knees made from a bull pelt. He almost never takes it off and doesn't wear a shirt underneath it. When fighting, Ickarus coats his body is a hard layer of wax as a measure of extra protection. He also forms a helmet styled after a candle made from his wax. The strand of hair that never sits down forms the "wick" of the candle helmet. Ickarus wears his welding goggles during battle. Hidden in his coat are many weapons of Ickarus's making, though he prefers to use his superior speed and footwork to win fights.
Description: Ickarus is decently strong due to his time as a metalworking apprentice. His muscles are toned, though not extraordinarily jacked. He's lean with intensely strong legs. Ickarus likes to keep his hair a manageable length to keep out of the way of his eyes and goggles, so it rarely grows past his ears. He constantly has grease and oil caked on his face, so it's difficult to see if he has freckles or not (he himself doesn't even know, and isn't bothered to check). Although he has the face of a grown man, he usually exudes the energy of a creative child, and that can be seen through the faint twinkle of his dark eyes. Ickarus's whole body seems to age whenever he grows serious, and he loses all sense of boyishness.
The Past
Main Traits: Easygoing and quick to laugh. At the same time, he is calculating and strategic, and can be bossy and borderline manipulative at times. Has a certain degree of pride about his talents that sometimes goes overboard.
Likes: Welding and inventing. Despite only having a few friends, he cherishes them more than almost anything.
Dislikes: Skyfolk and all of their cultures. Has a distaste for people who "don't know how to have fun," in his words.
Unique laugh: Wah-yayayayaya!
Hometown: While Ickarus was born on Skypiea, he was "discarded" as a baby and ended up on an island of trade craftsmen in the South Blue known as Therma Current. Therma Current is not a large island by any means, and it is divided into thirds depending on an individual's expertise: Inventing, metalworking, and woodworking. Often members from each Third will collaborate on projects. Children are trained in all three areas until they are sixteen, and then they are to choose one to specialize in. Ickarus chose to specialize in metalworking, though he often snuck into inventing and woodworking classes (despite the practice of multiple of the trades being frowned upon on Therma Current).
Personality: Out of battle, he loves to laugh. Hardworking and tough, he refuses to let anyone who will not help advance his goals into his friend group. Because of this, he can come off as pushy and manipulative. While he is both of those to an extent, he tends to depend on those he lets into his circle more than they depend on him. However, in his darkest moments when he thinks no one can see him, he drops his cheerful demeanor and lets himself fall into the pit of self-pity and hatred that resulted from being abandoned as a newborn. He questions about his role in life, and worries about not being wanted (which is why he leans on his friends so much).
During battle, he is quick and calculating, and often disturbs his enemies with the almost careless way he fights. His battle style is unpredictable, due to the fact that he has an arsenal of attacks to choose from, including using his speed to blitz, kicking with his wax-reinforced legs, or pulling some sort of weapon or device out of his brown coat. As useful as Ickarus during battle, it's difficult for him to plan ahead of time, and because of his pride, he never foresees loss, which results in his composition falling apart more the closer he gets to losing.
- History:
Ickarus was born on the Sky Island of Skypiea through an illegitimate affair. In a panic, his father Minos (an upstanding member of Skypiean society) kidnapped Ickarus from his mother and cast him off of the Sky Island in a desperate attempt to save his reputation from the tarnish of an illegitimate son. By an unexplained miracle, Ickarus survived to see another day.
He was found in the middle of the ocean by an unnamed pirate crew. They are the ones who named him, as there was no indication of his Skypiean name on his body. This crew was one of treachery and abuse, and though they never dared touch Ickarus (captain's orders), Ickarus watched dozens of members of the crew get murdered and betrayed. This in combination with his abandonment planted the seeds that would later result in his overwhelming insecurities about belonging and having worth. After six years of living with the crew, the captain died due to an unexplained illness, causing a power vacuum within the crew. Surviving on only his wits (as he was not excluded from this bloodbath, since the captain's orders no longer held any power), Ickarus held on until the bloodbath was over. With a mere fifth of the crew remaining, the ship became easy prey for nearly anyone on the Grand Line. Thus, the crew turned away from the Grand Line and began searching for members among the Blue Seas.
Following dozens of acts of violence against islands and towns that refused to serve the pirates, Ickarus (now seven) began to slowly dismantle the ship from the inside in an attempt to quell the terror of the crew. While working away on his attempt, he stumbled upon a small box that contained some kind of off-white fruit. Not knowing when the next time the crew would stock up on food, Ickarus hid the box so that he wouldn't starve if it came to it. Eventually, while in the South Blue, Ickarus decided to enact the last stage of his plan. Loading some food as well as the small box into the only emergency boat (as the others had been used by deserters), he sprung a leak in the bottom of the ship and proceeded to use a sharp knife to bust the hull from the outside. Following that, he rowed the emergency craft as fast as he could while the crew began to take notice of the ship's state. Ickarus watched it go under while he continued to row.
Eventually, all of his rations sans the fruit in the box ran out, and Ickarus decided to finally eat the contents of the box. He noticed that his sweat was a lot stickier than before he ate the fruit, and the sweat solidified on the floor of the ship. He put it down to the heat playing tricks on his head, and eventually saw land. After arriving only a hundred feet or so from the shore, Ickarus attempted to jump out of the boat and swim, desperate to touch solid ground again. Unfortunately, he couldn't move his arms and legs in the water, and started to drown before a man saved him, pulling Ickarus into his boat. From this moment forward, Ickarus was taken in by this man on the island, which was called Therma Current. The man's name was Daedalus Helion.
Ickarus took the last name of the man who saved him and lived on Therma Current for the next sixteen years. He learned there that the fruit he ate was a legendary Devil Fruit of the Paramecia kind. His was known as the Doru Doru no Mi, and allowed Ickarus to produce wax from his body. In addition to training his Devil Fruit abilities, Ickarus also learned the arts of inventing, woodworking, and metalworking. When he turned sixteen and was forced to choose one of the three crafts to pursue, he chose metalworking and was given welding goggles custom-made by Daedalus. Despite having chosen metalworking, Ickarus snuck into woodworking and inventing classes constantly. He became a near-master at all three crafts, though he adored metalworking the most.
On a fateful day thirteen years after Ickarus's arrival, the pirates he worked so hard to sink (for they had indeed survived the murder attempt) discovered thst Ickarus lived on Therma Current. They arrived and laid waste to the inventing Third of the island, where Ickarus lived with Daedalus. Ickarus rushed to help immediately after hearing the news, but the Third was already demolished and Daedalus was dead. That day Ickarus killed all fifty of the crew members and burned his wings off, resulting in two scars running along his backbone. Despite pirates being the cause of his guardian's death, Ickarus did not waste time thirsting for revenge on all pirates. He instead focused on where everything went wrong to begin with: his parents in the Sky Islands. He vowed that day to find his parents and lay waste to their village just as these pirates had destroyed his. He discovered his adoptive father's bull pelt coat among the rubble and took it as his own.
Ickarus remained on Therma Current for three more years, assisting in reconstructing the ruined Third. At the end of the third year, Ickarus wrapped up on Therma Current, constructed his armored ship Candlelight, and set sail to find the Sky Islands. Which brings us to today...
