Conrad Sagal
Basic Character Information
Forename: Conrad
Middle Name/Initial: None
Surname: Sagal
Epithet: None yet
Birthdate: January 1811
Gender: Male
Species/Tribe: Human
Faction: Pirate
Profession: Thief (former), apprentice baker (former)
Physical Appearance
Height: 4'11"
Weight: 110
Hair Style: Medium, messy
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Grey
Scars: Small, shallow cuts all over his arms and torso, gash across forehead (under headband)
Gear: Conrad Segal's gear was chosen to be tough and cool, like his vision of himself, and to scream "PIRATE!" To this effect, he wears a headband, large earrings, a bone-pattern black leather jacket, brown leather shoes, and black denim pants with a brown leather belt. On his belt is a simple but large leather coin pouch. Under his leather jacket, he usually wears simple, one-color shirts, often with stains or tears.
When in his hybrid state, Conrad loses his earrings, headband, and shoes, but keeps his clothing, though the sleeves on the jacket and pants seem to be shorter.
Description: Conrad Sagal stands at only 4'11" but contains enough fight for someone twice his size. This is apparent from the numerous scars all over his body and forehead, though these are usually covered up. His black hair is as wild and untamed as he is. He has abstract tattoos covering the entirety of his arms and part of the back of his hands. Despite all this, he has relatively soft facial features. His grey eyes have strong, sharp eyebrows slanted upon them, but also somewhat thick lashes. His nose is small and unobtrusive.
In his hybrid state, Conrad gains only about an inch of height, but also gains a lot of muscle. His skin also thickens and is covered in coarse yet thin fur. The majority of the fur is black, but the top of his head and down his entire back is a large stripe of white fur. His head flattens, his ears become small ridges protected by skin and fur, and his face becomes a short muzzle with a strong jaw yet irregular teeth. His hands and feet gain large, powerful claws. Due to the loss of his headband, the scar on his forehead is visible. He also has a tiny tail, but this is usually hidden.
The Past
Main Traits: Tenacious, tough, boisterous, belligerent, confident, "cool"*
Likes: Cake, freedom, sweets, fighting, baked goods, partying, being cool
Dislikes: Authority, unnecessary killing, needles, being called "short"
Unique laugh: Goworohorohoro
Hometown: Arkala, Bell Island, South Blue
Personality: For someone of his small stature, Conrad Sagal can make a big impression. He can be loud, rowdy, boisterous, and a troublemaker. He can be your best friend one moment and be trying to fight you the next - though the two aren't mutually exclusive. After all, he loves to fight almost as much as he loves sweets and partying. He is both impulsive and stubborn, which means once he gets an idea in his head - one that can seem to come out of nowhere - he will stop at almost nothing to make it happen. Combined with his temper and love of fighting, and it is clear how he can get himself into some serious messes.
He also tries to be cool and confident, but can easily be angered by looking down on him. Literally, in fact, as he hates being reminded that he's... not the tallest guy. His love of sweets can also clash with his "tough-guy" image, as he is easily distracted and disarmed by them, only to pout about said distraction and disarmament.
Despite all this, however, he is not an idiot or naïve. He can be crafty at times, and is not as easily tricked or outsmarted as he seems he would be. He can be friends with people seemingly at a drop of a hat, but that does not mean he actually trusts them right away.
His guiding principle is the freedom to choose who you are. He does not believe that one's bloodline or birthplace determines one's destiny nor one's choices in life. Despite being a pirate, there are Marines he respects and pirates he despises - and vice versa. He believes a man's heart determines whether he is good or bad, not what the government considers justice or injustice. Marines and pirates are not good and evil, in either direction. Each individual is, in fact, an individual. What he thinks makes pirates better than Marines is the ability to choose their paths, while Marines have to follow the World Government. It is that freedom that drives him to be a pirate.
- History:
Conrad Sagal grew up on Bell Island in the South Blue, though where he was born is a mystery to him. His earliest memories were of being in the Arkala Orphanage, no memory of who his parents were or why he ended up there. He was always a bit of a loner and troublemaker in the poor orphanage, not understanding how overworked and underfunded it was, just that he didn't like being there.
Conrad would sneak out occasionally, or get into mischief and even the occasional fight. In fact, both occurred on one of the days that shaped his destiny. At the age of 10, he got in trouble for fighting the other kids and ran away for a few days. He did not consider food or supplies, just took off. Feeling incredibly hungry, he snuck into a restaurant and planned on stealing food when he was caught by a pirate.
Conrad was ready to fight for his life. However, instead of being in danger, the pirate invited him over to his table where his crew was having a small party. They even offered him a slice of strawberry shortcake. He had never had such a delicious food before! It tasted like it was made of miracles! This was the start of his giant sweet tooth.
Soon after, however, the Marines had gotten word of these pirates, and went gung-ho into the restaurant, arresting them all. One of the Marines even berated him for hanging out with pirates, and when they realized he ran away from the orphanage, one of them insulted him for being nothing but a no-good troublemaker that would probably grow up to be a pirate.
That... sounded like a good idea.
Pirates quickly became heroes to Conrad. He dreamed about being a pirate, and show the Marines a thing or two. He exercised daily, trying to get strong enough to be useful to a pirate crew.
Years later, he heard another crew was in town. This was his chance to join! However, he soon got a rude awakening. A literal rude awakening, in fact, as the sound of cannon fire jolted him from sleep. These pirates weren't the fun partiers that he met last time. They were pillaging and ransacking Arkala. The town was on fire, people were screaming, and his heart was breaking. A cannonball blasted through the orphanage, destroying a large part of it and sending him flying. Fighting to stay conscious, he saw his peers and his caretakers panicking and injured, then a swarm of Marines coming in. He tried to force himself to stand up to fight them, but couldn't. This was it. The bad Marines were going to... save them?
The uninjured were guided out by the Marines, and the injured were carried out. Everyone was taken to safety. Conrad could not believe it. The pirates were bad and the Marines were good? That was already proven to be the opposite! When he was well enough, he fled, needing to think. He ran and hid as everyone from the orphanage was relocated due to the destruction. The already-underfunded orphanage was now heavily-damaged. It had to be shut down. But Conrad didn't want to go wherever they were going to send him.
While he once escaped and wandered Arkala for fun, he now lived as a thief, stealing from those he thought deserved it, or shops that he felt could afford a couple missing items he needed to survive. As he grew up, he got stronger and more skilled on the street, and got into many fights, learning to patch himself up. He occasionally stole from pirates, and one such time, did so while starving, so that strange fruit he found made a decent meal despite its horrible taste. He would soon learn that he had gained the powers of a honey badger, which helped him out in a few scrapes.
One day, he realized he couldn't just keep living on the streets like this. He had stolen enough money to put himself in an inn for a while, and under an alias he did just that in another town. With the skills he learned from a stolen baking book, he used that alias to get a job at a bakery. He planned on saving up money and using it to continue staying at the inn. One day, however, his impulses got the better of him. He spent all the money on a leather jacket, earrings, a compass (which he quickly lost), tattoos (which he quickly regretted and gained a needle phobia from), and one large feast. He also had gotten in trouble with the head baker one too many times, and ate one too many finished products. Everything showed him that it was time to go, time to seek his destiny on the open seas. He just needed to find a crew both willing to take him and that was like the first pirate crew he encountered, and not the second...
