Viari Govine
Basic Character Information
Forename: Viari
Middle Name/Initial: T
Surname: Govine
Epithet: N/A
Birthdate: 8th May, 1807
Gender: Male
Species/Tribe: Human
Faction: Marine - Midshipman
Profession: Merchant and Explorer (Former); Scout
Physical Appearance
Height: 6' 0
Weight: 135 Ibs
Hair Style: Tied back
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue
Scars: Afew around his wrists and hands
Gear: His preferred dress consists of a blue or green coat with trimmed highlights and leather collar tabs. He retains a leather pauldron carrying the merchant navy insignia. When accompanied by Avalar - his feathered companion, she may use it as a perch.
Beneath his coat, he prefers to wear a shirt of beige nondescript colours tucked in at the waist by a leather belt and buckle. Secured to his belt are a dress sword and a leather-bound journal emblazoned with the family sigil, an owl accompanied with a compass, fish, and book. Its irony is not lost on him.
While on duty, his uniform is worn to maximise his mobility; a white sleeveless jacket with the rank insignia attached to a loose-fitted piece of fabric that covers the right shoulder. The signature navy blue neck scarf is worn traditionally, matching in colour as his shorts. When in uniform, he avoids shoes, instead opting for cheaper sandals.
If he is attending a formal event or inspection, he will instead opt for a proper full uniform: including blue jeans, a full jacket, and dress boots.
Description: Viari is a male human of good stature and a physically strong build built up after several years of service as a sailor with scars on his arms and wrists denoting cuts sustained from recent injuries from sabres.
With long bay hair, Viari keeps it tied in a knot, supplemented by a sharp goatee and sideburns exaggerating his hawkish features.
The Past
Main Traits: Practical, Inquisitive, and Blunt
Likes: Falconry, Beli, Reading, Pineapple, Arts & Crafts, Polite Society and Exploring
Dislikes: Rain, Apathy, Piracy, Replacing Shoes, and Cucumber
Unique laugh: "Ackakaka..."
Hometown: Briss Kingdom
Personality: Viari is generally calm and collected, approaching most situations with an inquisitive outlook. On occasion, this has put him at odds with superiors, particularly those that demand results, although Viari remains steadfastly loyal to his companions and ideals.
In combat, Viari aims to end battles decisively, preferably securing an alpha strike from the shadows. Despite the usage of what some might claim to be underhanded tactics, Viari respects his adversaries, more often than not being willing to sit and converse with captured adversaries should the opportunity present itself, and they prove themselves to be of good character.
- History:
Well-off and well-bred. Viari is the son of a senior officer turned courtier in the Briss Kingdom. He upset his father by running off to sea aged 12 to begin carving out a career for himself in the Merchant Navy. He earned a reputation as an explorer and accomplished merchant.
Aged 15, Viari was the first mate of the Lucky Break, a brig trading in luxury goods demanded by Briss nobility. One evening, while ashore celebrating his success, Viari would meet his younger siblings.
Consuming one too many drinks, he was offered some exotic fruit as a peace offering from their father. Without thinking, Viari accepted and enjoyed the basket.
Waking the next day, Viari returned to his regular duties. Shortly after leaving port, the crew started their regular exercises when a boy seaman was knocked overboard amidst choppy waters. Instinctively Viari took some rope and secured it to a cork life preserver. Unexpectedly, Viari found the water to be stockier, heavier than he was used to.
Twenty minutes later, he found himself laid out on the deck. His body was heavy with retained water and a thick layer of feathers. Initially, he believed the sailors had taken the opportunity to tar and feather him, but with the ship surgeon on deck, it was quickly made clear to Viari that this was the accursed affliction of a devil fruit.
Initially, Viari found these powers abhorrent and believed his career to be in ruin; during a frank discussion with the Captain, he was willing to overlook sailor superstition if it meant keeping an experienced officer. Furthermore, the Captain put forward that it might serve them well in future endeavours.
While some remained sceptical, many more were supportive and curious, leading to experimentation of his newfound powers. Once he had learned to fly, the crew found new opportunities to profit. Namely, the means to accelerate the discovery and exploitation of resources. Not to mention the means of transporting light cargo between vessels without risk of docking.
Meanwhile, he kept in touch with his parents and former mates trying to repair and maintain contact. His career was stable, if uneventful. That was, until a decade later.
Aged 21, when transporting valuable cargo, the Lucky Break would be waylaid by pirates. Deciding to fight, the crew engaged in a game of cat and mouse with the pirates while Viari was ordered to take flight and seek aid. The route was well-travelled and patrolled regularly by merchant gunnery and navy frigates. Reluctantly Viari took wing and raised the alarm with the Travail, a navy frigate.
Naturally, the Travail raised the alarm with command and moved to engage. The battle was short and bloody. Ill-prepared and inexperienced, the Marines suffered a devastating defeat against an experienced and capable enemy. Viari, for his part, performed better, severely injuring one of the pirate officers before being overwhelmed, resulting in his capture.
Once aboard the Court of Carrion, he spent a couple of days in the care of its doctor, who explained the situation. Captain Crawford appreciated his futile efforts and was surprised to learn he had injured one of his officers, thus earning his respect.
After learning of his lower nobility, Crawford ransomed Viari for an undisclosed sum. During the debrief with his seniors, Viari explained that Crawford’s motivations were twofold. Foremost to make an easy profit, and second to coax local marines into a reaction for reasons unknown…
With the Lucky Break shuttled, Viari would seek employment with the Navy, intending to pursue the Carrion Court and its crew. Despite his father's wishes, Viari would secure a commission from the Navy as a midshipman.

Consuming one too many drinks, he was offered some exotic fruit as a peace offering from their father. Without thinking, Viari accepted and enjoyed the basket.
Waking the next day, Viari would soon discover the deception; in a panic, he sought out the aid of his Captain. [dass]Ultimately, this resulted in his dismissal from the crew. After all, what good was a sailor who could not swim?
Viari held no ill feelings towards his Captain, who, recognising the injustice, paid Viari more than his agreed share of bonds, ending his hard-earned success.
Initially, Viari sought out employment elsewhere. Speaking with other Captains, but word of his condition[cmt]This doesn't quite add up in RevDawn's lore for two reasons:
1. While the ability to swim is more common in our lore than was supposedly the case during the colonial era, it's still not universal, even among sailors. There are plenty enough sailors who can't swim. And for not being able to swim, he gets a much more significant advantage instead (see below).
2. Ability users (especially people who have previously shown themselves to be trustworthy) would actually be a welcome addition to a crew as they would offer greater protection. An ability user being persecuted or dismissed without appropriate reasoning (e.g. if the ability was actively detrimental to a ship) doesn't add up.
In Viari's case, his ability to fly would be a huge boon to any merchant vessel. And while superstition isn't uncommon in the Blues, people (especially merchants who travel for a living) are familiar enough with the concept of devil fruits to not turn down a golden goose.[/cmt][/dass] spread quicker, and he was soon out of work but not before being directed towards the Navy.
Partially to spite his father, Viari followed up on the suggestion. Following his initial training, Viari would secure a commission as a Petty Officer aboard the Travail. A significant demotion but one he was willing to accept.
Meanwhile, he kept in touch with his parents and former mates trying to repair and maintain contact. His career was stable, if uneventful. With much of the ocean secure, there were few prospects for promotion. That was, until a decade later.
Aged 21, while on routine patrol along the merchant routes, The Travail would receive reports of pirate raids. Commanded to investigate, the crew would find and intercept the pirate vessel Court of Carrion several miles off their patrol route. Presently engaged with a merchant ship, they had waylaid the Lucky Break boarding her.
Naturally, the Travail raised the alarm with command and moved to engage. The battle was short and bloody. Ill-prepared and inexperienced, the Marines suffered a devastating defeat against an experienced and capable enemy.
