Ziek was born on the island of Zou. His mother was a cat Mink who lived there. His father was someone he had never met, and only grew up hearing stories about. He was a part of the longarm tribe and had been traveling with his own crew when and he and Ziek's mother had a chance encounter. It resulted in his birth and childhood on his island.
He would go to his mother's restaurant and help her for as long as he could rmember. Many people came there to enjoy her food, but more than anything Ziek looked up to the warriors of his tribe. They came frequently and he began following them with a stick in hand, begging them to teach him every time they showed. This fascination led to a lifelong goal to become a swordsman.
When Ziek was eight he began training with a wooden sword under the tutelage of one of the warrriors in Zou. He had proved to have a natural talent for the sword, and four years later he could even stand against most of the adults. His eyes were now set on the world outside, where his father had come from. So a promise was made to his mother. He would continue to train and help her out for the next three years, and then she would go and sail the world with him.
And that was just what he did. A fifteen year old Ziek set off with his mother and opened a mobile restaurant. But the sea was much harsher than expected. Losing friends and gaining enemies, fighting off thieves and bandits, Ziek sailed for the next ten years. Recently, mistreatment of his kind had gotten unbearable due to the actions of a few. And due to it, his mother lost her life one day when he was out buying supplies for the ship. It forever changed the happy man. All he knows is that he needs the power to make sure this never happens again. And as he finds himself in the east blue, he's trying to figure out his next move.

I'm not sure what you're implying by "his homeland has been taken over" as it is still very much under the control of the same mink ruler.
