[Episode] A strange old new world
Mon Apr 11, 2022 1:01 pm
The sun was shining on an uneventful spring day on Notice. People were going about their business, blissfully unaware of the dangers that lurked just a bit further the calm seas of the North Blue. Whether it be for fate or probability, the waves pushed a chunk of splintered cherry further and further. The young man had no more strenght to grip onto the wood, strained as he was from holding on for dear life for two days. Yugo's knees skimmed the sand of the shallow, the abrasive sensation sent a signal into his brain. A call to action.
Slipping off the plank the silver haired man tried to drag his tabi boots trough the wet ground. His legs refused to work. Ever since he had taken a bite out of the weird swirly silver fruit, staying on the fragment of his old wrecked ship had been that much more difficult. That thing was super dry and tasted god awful. It made the two days of drifting around without water even worse. He always felt like puking all the time adrift, it was like the sea had turned into hell and was out to get him. Plus, could barely feel half his body, any longer and he would probably drown right there in shallow water, possibly meters from salvation!
Thankfully, the current worked for him, carrying the shinobi forward and left him on the shore. Finally, the barely breathing young lad was able to will his body to move in a moment of absolute desperation, squirming further up towards dry land, fueled by the burning desire to live...to survive. He wouldn't make it far before his body straight up refused to do anything anymore. He would slump back there under the sun, dirtied and bloodied and coughing out salt, face in the dirt as everything went black. His would be raft would jam into the soil not too far from his position, the locket with the remains of Yugo's only sustenance tumbling onto shore as well, spilling its once valuable contents all over the place...

The sunlight poured in through the windows as Will cleaned up the small clinic he had managed to find some work at. His pockets had run out of money, and Notice had ended up being the island where he had to stay and work to get some more if he wanted to continue his travels. Luckily for him, his particular skills often came in handy, whether it be on the sea or on land, and this was no exception. Finding work never really was an issue for him, and a job posting about a doctor's assistant had caught his eye. It was not as well paying as it could be, that much the doctor could say after years of experience on the field, but anything was better than nothing. And, well, once he had seen the old doctor looking for help, and the small clinic by the cliffs, it had just started to remind him of…
"Ohh Will my boy, be sure to get some lunch when you have the chance! It's not good to skip meals, y'hear," came the shaky voice from the doorway. Will glanced up from his task to look at the doctor's bespectacled face as he was getting dressed up, preparing to go on his rounds. With how shaky the old man's legs were, Will didn't really know he should really be doing any home visits on his own, especially when the route to the clinic was a winding path with a dangerous drop, but even if he had insisted, he had been delegated to always stay behind in case someone else needed some kind of assistance.
"Right right. Worry less about me and more about your patients," Will replied as he returned to make sure that all the bottles and instruments were in the right places – everything had to be ready for the time when they were needed in a hurry, after all. It didn't take long before he could hear the sound of the door opening and closing, and a silence to envelop the small room now that he was all alone. It was no wonder that he couldn't be paid much, when the old doctor himself didn't seem to take much payment and spent so much time doing home visits. It was no wonder he seemed to have been having trouble getting an assistant he very much needed because of that, as well. Will almost felt sorry that he would have to eventually leave as well.
Will rolled his shoulders and took a quick look at the inventory before he finally felt like he could relax. It was his duty to man the clinic for now… But like his employer had suggested, he probably should grab a bite to eat before settling down for the shift. Maybe something small he could bring with him to eat at the desk would be in order…
The sunlight was bright enough to force Will to shield his eyes once he finally stepped outside, his skin hit by a gentle ocean breeze. He could hear the seagulls and the sounds of waves crashing against the shore down below. It was a nice day. A day he would spend indoors, most likely reading. They didn't get that many patients – but Will was a doctor, too. He knew how important it was for there to always be someone available just in case, because when an emergency hit, there was no time to waste.
And that was why he didn't waste any time as he started to make his way down the cliff side path. He wasn't in the shape to run, but just walking without stopping would be good enough for him. His eyes did lazily scan his surroundings as he walked and thought about what he should find to eat. Nothing warm, the day felt hot enough already. Maybe a sandwich would be enough, he honestly didn't feel that hungry. The shore was looking awfully dirty again, despite having been cleaned of debris recently. Had there been another accident at sea somewhere? Probably. Those happened often, and the currents brought the evidence to land eventually, no matter how far away it happened. They all shared the same sea, after all. Planks and boxes littered the sand, and the larger piece might have been a part of a smaller boat – no, a raft, he figured. And the person lying up ahead was probably involved.
It took a short moment for Will to register what he had seen and thought, but a moment nonetheless. He had to stop as he looked at the shape lying on the ground down below, a figure that unmistakeably was that of a human even from a distance. The signs of debris and the fact that the body wasn't moving never was a good sign.
"Oi!" Will tried to call out, before he quickly looked around for the quickest path down – which was not the easiest task, seeing that they already were on the outskirts and the rocky beach really wasn't something most people went to, and the path built was going in the completely wrong direction! Still, Will eventually managed to find a place where he could slip over the safety railing and gently slide down the less steep part of the cliff to make his way to the awfully lifeless-looking person. It was not a sight he particularly enjoyed.
"Are you awake? Can you hear me? Avoid moving, but speak if you can," he spoke once he got close enough, trying to get some kind of a response from the, well, young boy, he assumed. His fingers quickly slid onto the boy's wrist to feel for the pulse, hoping for the best.

Yūgo was left there shrivelling up on the sun for god knows how long. He wasn't exactly in the best shape but at the moment he was slowly feeling better. He still was incredibly strained but at the very least he wasn't risking death. He was drifting in and out of consciousness as his brain basically tried to reboot.
He felt a gentle touch on his right wrist, something lifting his arm up. "Mmmmrghbl..." he grumbled, trying to say something but failing to do so. With his mouth so dry speaking was probably going to be extremely difficult.
Yūgo squirmed lightly, mostly as a reaction to being touched, but couldn't do much other than look really pathetic. Even if the kami had bestowed unto him the best possible samaritan for his plight he had no voice to tell his problem and no streght to point at anything that'd give the young doctor an idea of what was going on. As it stood at present moment his life was, quite literally, in the other guy's hands.

Relief was the emotion that washed over Will as he not only found a pulse, but got an actual response as well. Well, not an actual response, as there were no actual words present, but some sounds came out of the kid's mouth, along with squirming. Not only was he alive, he wasn't unconscious and luckily still seemed to have some kind of motion in his limbs. The raft and the still damp clothes told him enough of the story, even if most of the details were going to be lost until he could get them from the survivor's mouth. He couldn't say how many days the man had been out at sea, though he clearly had been in the water for at least some of it. But he also had been at shore for long enough for parts of his clothes to have started to dry, in the nice afternoon sun.
"Stay calm. I'm going to give you a quick inspection," Will spoke to the other man as he properly knelt aside him to take a proper look. Though the young man was bruised and bleeding, nothing was going to make him bleed dry on the spot. The man's head seemed to have come unscathed, luckily, and the little pokes and prod he did to his limbs seemed to suggest that there was feeling and motion in them. That made Will feel much better about turning the kid to his side, when he didn't have to worry about possible neck and back injuries – and that also gave him the chance to take a proper look at his face and see how well his eyes were focusing. Those dry, cracked lips told him a story of not having much to drink for a while, which was something that had to be taken care of as soon as they could. He wasn't getting much in the form of speech still, though.
What luck they were in, that the kid was still conscious – but they weren't out of danger yet, and recovery would always take time. His inspection had been a quick one, over before it truly started, but he knew there would be more hidden underneath the parts he couldn't access. That was all he could do there for now, lacking tools – and that made Will glance around, searching for something. Even if the kid wasn't that big, he was not exactly child-sized. Someone like Will could never try to carry him on his own back to the clinic.
"Hey! You lot! Emergency here!" He called out to the poor volunteers he could see in the distance – and with enough insisting and a demanding enough voice, actually get a few lumbering sailor-types over to keep an eye out on the kid while he hurried back to the clinic to grab a stretcher they could use to carry the patient. It was no easy task to try to climb back up when the winding path was long and the walls steep, but, well, when the eyes were averted and busy looking at the shipwreck survivor, a spider could do what a man like Will couldn't…
He returned quickly – surely much too quickly, but his helpers seemed to be worried enough to be slightly out of it and not question the time, though they were a bit startled once the doctor made his presence known. The stretcher was placed down and the kid gently rolled over onto it, and as he was being fastened he surely got what he had been wanting this whole time: some fresh water from a flask, even if it happened to be lukewarm. Just a few sips after Will raised his head, surely not enough to do much more than moisten his mouth. Most of the water splashing in the flask never had the chance to touch the kid's lips, so close, yet so far. Will's hand made sure to control the flow.
"Don't overdo it. You can't drink too much at once, now."
What followed surely was a blur of action and noises to the kid. Will barked his orders to his helpers, not giving them the opportunity to leave even if they would have been the kind to not want to help – who would dare to, when the doctor was currently glaring daggers at them and adjusting their every movement to be as it should? The path to the clinic was long enough, and he had to make sure they were making good pace while not jostling the patient around too much. Will did start to understand why the clinic wasn't getting that many visitors, considering how difficult it was to get in…
The bed had been ready and waiting, something Will had made sure every single day during his stay. Just in case, as always – and it paid off. First the kid had to be undressed, however, the wet, cold clothes not doing any wonders to someone in his condition. It was a slow, careful process, as the layers were peeled off, revealing more signs of the trauma he had experienced. And his legs… Well, wet footwear for long periods of time was never a good thing, and the removal of shoes with such swollen, injured feet surely did not feel good.
But maybe the bed did. It was warm and dry. Not the softest, but perhaps soft enough, especially once some pillows were placed in key positions. The kid had his legs propped up to try to ease the swelling, but there still would be much to do.
"I could give you a bit more to drink, if you think you can handle getting propped up slightly. I'll take any movement or sounds as a yes."

The first moments of clarity came under a rather aseptic light. He did feel someone pick him up and move him somewhere but still wasn't exactly able to do much. At least he was in a comfy place now and it seemed that someone had got him some water. His legs were somewhat throbbing still and he was kind of flustered by the fact he had been undressed by unknown people but at the very least he was grateful to them for saving his life.
His indigo purple orbs scanned the horizon before locking onto the face of his would be saviour. It took Yūgo a moment to realize that he was being asked things. Now that his throat was finally back in the proper speaking condition, he could afford to give the other guy a little more thana groan.
"I'm...f-fine." He mumbled. He would have asked where he was but it was quite clear he had been dragged to a clinic of sorts. That could wait however. Once he was back in decent shape he could figure out what to do. For now his body beckoned for more water, so when the question came the young shinobi would give a nod to the other guy.

"There was some debris by the shore. It's possible there might be something salvageable – try to get someone to look around and bring what's found here," Will continued barking orders to the poor helpers he had managed to rope in, now that they had started to stand around aimlessly without any new orders. He had made big enough of a scene to have attracted some attention, so it was only a matter of time before someone tried looting the wreck. More eyes around would hopefully dissuade anyone from trying to take a poor hapless soul's last belongings… If anything even was left.
His attention then turned back to his patient, as he helped to prop him up to make drinking more manageable. The doctor slightly raised one of his eyebrows as he brought the flask back to the kid's lips, allowing him to take small sips.
"You're hardly what I'd consider fine, but suit yourself. Hard to say how many days you would have lasted on your own, or what would have happened if no one found you. I'm not saying you're completely safe yet, even. A infection could still take you, after all," Will's response was far from the reassuring kind – nothing but the cold, hard truth from him. After a couple of more sips, the flask was once again removed from the younger man's lips, as the doctor walked to another part of the room.
"Can you say how far you've been out at the sea? How long without food or drink?" Will asked some questions to get a better idea about how to reintroduce food and water back into the survivor's life without causing issues – and it was one way to start untangling the story and get a better idea for how well the kid was handling everything. He was able to speak, which was a good sign. Will hadn't managed to go far, as the clinic was small – something that must have been apparent for even the patient himself as he could hear the sounds of the doctor rummaging through something. Small it may have been, but the many shelves and cabinets that were either open or had glass doors were filled with all kinds of books, bottles and containers. The smell of disinfectant in the air cemented the place as something related to medicine, if the rest didn't already give it away.
Will eventually returned, wheeling in a small, metallic trolley with wheels next to the bed. He pulled a chair closer to him as well, its legs screeching against the floor. There was just a slight warning before Will started to gently force open the kid's eyes one by one, shining a light into them.

How long he went without food or dring. Now that was a question for the ages. He didn't really know when it all happened. He had vague recollection about how long he had been caught up but no clear details. "I...one...maybe two days." Yugo replied. He was feeling much better now that he was rehydrated, but it would still be a while before he would be back in tip top shape. "I had no water for the time. Not the type you could drink anyway." He would add, looking around the room once more now that his vision was no longer blurry and discolored. "I did have food. One fruit thing. Apple size, silver colored with swirls." He kept recounting his memories of his time under the sun.
"It kept me alive but it sure didn't do much to help with thirst. Gave me stomach cramps and tasted absolutely awful." He concluded, pretty much summing up the whole experience in one neat sentence. "If I weren't completely going bonkers while under the sun and with no water i'd say that thing made it even more difficult to stay afloat." No matter what he thought though, the fruit did help him somewhat. It probably was a good thing he found himself in the cargo hold of the ship the moment it capsised and smacked into rocks.
The would be doctor then went somewhere and brought back a tray with him. Then he just unceremoniously grabbed his face and shoved light in his eyes. "ACK-!" Yugo barked, squirming lightly but having no strenght to oppose the guy yet. "W-what the hell are you doing!?"

The would be doctor then went somewhere and brought back a tray with him. Then he just unceremoniously grabbed his face and shoved light in his eyes. "ACK-!" Yugo barked, squirming lightly but having no strenght to oppose the guy yet. "W-what the hell are you doing!?"

Will hesitated for a moment when the kid mentioned a strange fruit with swirls on it. No, no, it couldn't be. That would just be crazy. There was a reason why those fruits were so sought after and why it seemed like there were entire islands where it seemed like no one had even heard of them. They were rare, so surely that couldn't be the case? It must have just been a fruit that went bad, nothing more.
But he did not hesitate even when his patient objected to him shining a light in his eyes.
"It's not that bright," Will's response was dry, and it didn't seem like he was really looking the kid in the eyes despite very intently studying them. He moved to the other eye to test its reaction to light and just take a better look at it in general.
"I'm giving your eyes a look – what else do you think I would be doing? Eyes tell us a lot about your general condition," he continued, before he seemed to be happy with what he got and clicked the light off.
"Your recovery time shouldn't be too long. You luckily didn't spend too long out there and your injuries aren't very serious. You do still want them to get properly cleaned, and you're not going to walk with those feet for a few days," the doctor probably gave the first bit of positivity the kid had gotten from him, as he turned to switch his light to other supplies he had gathered on the tray,
"You didn't go without food for very long, so we can start reintroducing solids immediately – though it would do good for you to get a drip. Hopefully any rotten fruit you have eaten has already passed through, so I don't have to clean up any more than this."

"I mean, it sure didn't look rotten, it was very firm. Didn't smell rotten either, to be completely honest. Just awful taste." Yugo replied to the doctor. While his feet weren't exactly in the best of shapes, he did need to figure out how to go from there. He was effectively stranded in foreign land and it was by miracle he could understand their tongue. Naturally, his involvement with trade and his home being a commercial island did wonders in preparing him to outside interactions.
"That is all well and good, but it's not like I have much to repay you at the moment. That with the whole being completely shipwrecked." He objected to the drip and other things he was supposed to get. "I owe you my life, but there is no need for you to go this far. I can manage." Yugo knew the power of dept, he had seen it at work for a long time. The less dept he had to anyone the better. If he had to spend time repaying them then he would never get back to his place. Hell, he could probably end up in slavery if he did rack up alot of gold debt.
Unbeknownst to the young shinobi of wano, the smaller cuts and bruises were already sealing themselfs closed, as if his desire to get better beckoned some kind of regenerative power to awaken within him.

Will dug his glasses out of his pocket and popped them on, letting out a small mh as the initial response. Everything said didn't seem to be stopping the doctor from continuing what he was doing and popping open a bottle of disinfectant.
"Figured I'm not going to see much compensation from you – though I did send a few to take a look at any potential belongings that survived the shipwreck. Good enough reason for me to throw you out, but luckily for you, I'm not paying for these supplies. The owner of this clinic is a fool. Will probably listen to any sad tale and let you walk," he spoke, not even looking at the kid's face, more focused on his hands. He picked up a ball of cotton from a jar with pliers, and soaked it in the strongly smelling liquid.
"If I don't do this, you'll most likely die. You're not exactly fit to walk out on your own, either," Will continued, his voice still that same, dry and almost boring tone despite the severity of the topic at hand. The wet ball was gently dabbed against a wound, certainly causing a sting. There were many wounds to treat and handle, even before he was going to dress them up. No stopping him, though there was something that at least caused a mental pause for him. He had been quite certain that the kid had been a bit more roughed up – maybe his vision had started to get even worse without his glasses…

Yugo grimaced a little at the thought of having to get a needle in him. He was never a fan of those things and usually didn't want to get anything stuck inside his body. He wasn't really in any position to refuse, thus he could only pout and grumble as the doctor did his thing. The only problem would be the execution.
Outside of Yugo's wounds slowly closing up and his feet beginning to deflate, dabbing open flesh with alcohol sure was going to get a hiss from the shinobi. He understood the need to disinfect the wounds to avoid it getting infected but it still did not feel nice at all. Quite the opposite. He was already feeling a weird tingling sensation spreading around his body, he did not need to get poked and prodded where his body was wounded.
Any more than three pokes would garner Yugo's temper. "Is this really necessary?" the young shinobi would state, trying to look at the guy but failing due to his current position. "I don't really like to get things for free and I would rather not have debts. Once I can move again I do plan on speaking of this owner of yours and settle the ordeal straight, but after that I am gone. I need to go back to Hoshima, I can't be dillydallying around kami know where!" He would add, regarding the whole problem of him being stranded somewhere and utterly broke.

"Yes," Will said, without even looking up – and definitely not stopping the dabbing motions he did to disinfect the wounds, with more and more of the solution touching those open wounds. It indeed was quite necessary, and the doctor didn't seem to even be willing to have it up for debate. Words alone wouldn't be enough to stop him, that much was clear.
"You're not going to be walking anytime soon. The doctor usually comes back from his rounds late in the evening, so you can speak with him then. Doesn't really change your situation, though," he continued speaking, his gaze focused on where he was working. Didn't stop him from muttering under his breath, though.
"Should have just gotten you sedated to not deal with all this…"
Still, despite that, he didn't stop. And he was focusing on the task at hand, at that, methodically cleaning and wrapping up the wounds one by one. Yet, as he leaned back in his seat, his eyes going over the kid… Something wasn't right. It just wasn't adding up. The swelling looked like it had gone down noticeably. Too quickly, if one asked him. Honestly, that was a good thing, but… It just was off. Will snapped a glove on as he went to gently feel the injured youth's feet, like he was trying to see if it was his eyes that were lying to him.

"South of Wano, Grand Line." Yugo replied, hissing again as he felt another sterilizing sting. The more the doctor poked at the shinobi's injuries, the more the wounds would be stirred to life. More and more cuts would close, bruises would disappear and Yugo's legs would deflate back from the mess that they were to normal size. It almost looked like that the young silver haired man boasted an increadibly rapid healing factor, awoken now that he had been taken out of the water and given the most basic care.
"Fine. If I am going to be stuck in this place then at the very least I'd like to know the name of the man who got me off the shore. It would do me good to also know where I am and what island this is. I don't have the slightest idea and thank the kami working with foreigners helped me learn the tongue you people use on the regular." Yugo would conclude. It was looking like his saviour was a stubborn one and the shinobi guard did not want to waste his energies talking to a wall. He would wait it out and see. Hopefully he would still have a couple of gold pieces in his pouches. He really did not want to be in debt. He hoped they didn't slip from him to the bottom of the ocean and could still hold some value wherever he was.

"Wano…?" Will's tone had a puzzled element to it, as he raised his eyebrow and turned to look at the kid, his hands stopping what he was doing for a moment. It wasn't like he had never heard the place, but that was far. No, no, surely the kid hadn't actually gotten his ship wrecked that far away. Surely he had been sailing somewhere else and it just was where he would just have to return to.
"You got quite the journey ahead of you, then," he replied after a moment. Long and dangerous journey, at that.
"Notice. The name of the island, that is, here. In North Blue," Will continued. Perhaps he didn't need to add that, as most likely the kid had been sailing in this Blue, but it was good to confirm he hadn't managed to be dragged by the currents somewhere completely different.
Something like that would most likely get you killed, though.
"As for me… Will. Just Will is fine," the doctor hummed, turning back to his work. He was supposed to check back on that strange swelling – or more like the lack of it – and the wounds, but as his eyes returned… Everything looked even more off. He had thought his eyes had picked it up earlier, but wanted to believe it was just a trick of some sort. But now, now it was starting to be too clear for him to be able to deny it any longer. The chair he was sitting on let out a screech as he jerked back slightly, the legs scraping against the floor as it moved backwards.
The wounds were healing. He couldn't say they were practically healing in front of his eyes as it seemed like it was slow enough to not be that easy to notice… But compared to what they were a moment ago, they had healed considerably. Abnormally. For a human, at least.
"What… Exactly are you?"
A strange question asked, with a tone that was very matter-of-the-fact.

"What do you mean what am I?" The shinobi asked with a twinge of disbelief. What kind of asinine question was that? "You are a doctor, are you not? Can't you discern the species of your patiens? I'm a human male just like you are. Not that I' ungrateful for your help but if you don't know how to do things I can just wait here for the doctor. I mean I feel better already so I doubt my wounds are as bad as you say they are."
At this point Yugo had no idea if he sould let the guy tend to him. If he didn't know what humans were who knows what the hell he was doing there with the stinging stuff. He was feeling way better though, so whatever he was doing was doing something. Raising his eyes up, he saw his legs in a much better shape. He tried wiggling his toes and he didn't feel anything out of the ordinary.
Pointing at them, Yugo spoke again. "Can you let these down now? Not to be rude or anything but it is kind of uncomfortable to be held up like this."

Will shot a surprisingly intimidating glare towards the kid after his little lecture – if the man had seemed to be quite surprised and perhaps even worried about his patient's origin, that worry had quickly dissipated.
"A comedian, aren't you," came his very dry and unimpressed reply. He proceeded to roll off his protective gloves off his hands.
"I have been reading up on medicine and done assisting work before you were out of diapers. Don't get cute with me, brat," Will continued, staring the kid in the eye. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he didn't seem like he was the kind of a person who could take a joke – or let comments just slide off his back.
"You think I would ask you something like that if something wasn't wrong with you? Because something is. In this case, luckily for you, that wrong is helping you out. Doesn't mean that something isn't off about you, though."
"You're just healing too fast. Inhumanly fast. And that's when the question becomes… Why."

"I am healing too fast. That's something you don't hear every day, it almost sounds like it makes you upset."He repeated, not sure what to make of it. "Well as far as I know I haven't done anything much for the last two to three days but float out in the sea and having to eat that disgusting fruit thing for sustenance." He repeated, turning his head around as he heard some commotion. The people sent to scavenge for things had returned with a rather meager bounty. There wasn't much to gather but at the very least the young shinobi could see a few of the clothes survived, the box where the fruit was held and one of his pouches. Hopefully the people there didn't look into the secret pocket on the inside of the thing, he was sure he had some gold to spare to pay the grumpy doctor.
"I found it in there. The storm had the whole cargo tumble around, the lock on it was busted so I just happened to grab the thing out of it while it floated in that wooden box." Yugo added as he gesticulated at the ornate yet broken and splintered box. "That is the only thing that I remember doing. The ship was a trade vessel so perhaps that fruit was something that aids recover much like other medicinal plants. It sure tasted as bad as those bitter herbs...probably even worse. Had to fight to not throw up on the first bite."

Will leaned back in his chair, his hands now resting on his lap. He raised his eyebrow slightly. The kid certainly was feeling rather lackadaisical about the whole thing – had the weight of it not sunk in, or did he already know and it was not a surprise to him at all? His words certainly seemed like the former, but it was hard to say, in case the kid just had a good poker face on him.
"Normally? Fast healing is good for the patient. Especially if said patient is mouthy. Means I don't have to look at them as much. However," the doctor started to talk, his gaze falling back towards the rest of the kid's body. It was still hard to believe, even though he had witnessed it with his own eyes.
"It is an anomaly. Quite outside the usual medical practice. Potentially enough to revolutionize medicine as we know it if it is not your body but instead something else that could be distributed to others…"
Will was awfully calm. Maybe he didn't want to get his hopes up about the finding of a century – what were the chances they'd stumble onto anything new, after all? There was no excitement in his voice despite the sliver of hope that was in there. But he knew better than to hope. He knew there were many strange kinds of people and other powers at play in the world. There often was a much more disappointing answer out there to anything that was like magic, something that made it not applicable in general medicine.
The door opened. The doctor snapped out of his thoughts, his face turning towards the sound. It was the men he had enlisted as help, coming back with some things they had found from the wreck. Sopping wet and things definitely didn't seem like they were in amazing condition, even without a closer look. Will got up, showing the men where to put everything down. They did even seem to get a small expression of gratitude… Though no payment seemed to exchange hands. Now the clinic had on its floors a pile of wet junk. Lovely. …He was going to have to mop all that up later, didn't he?
He did remember the kid mentioning the fruit before. He had had this horrible feeling crawl up his back, memories he'd rather leave buried deep, but he had managed to push it aside. Surely that wouldn't be the case. Will inched closer towards the rather ornate-looking box the kid pointed out to him, now no longer able to hold anything securely inside after the forces it had suffered. Maybe a part of him indeed wished for it to be some kind of medicinal plant, something basically so magical it could heal wounds instantly. But a part of him knew the chances of something like that existing were close to zero. But the other alternatives… Those would be rare as well. Surely this couldn't be…
He had reached in, pulling out what his fingers touched with bated breath. But the moment the light hit the surface of the object in his hands, he recoiled, pulling back his hand. The swirls, those unnatural patterns on what was supposed to be a fruit, unfortunately very familiar… It was enough to make Will even take a step back, with a sharp exhale as if he had just been pricked by something. He hadn't been, of course. The fruit couldn't actually harm him – that was the scientific way of looking at it, at least. He had heard the rumors, the legends and stories of Devil Fruits, and what they would do to those who had already ingested one. Some of those stories were quite… Colorful and wild. But Will was quite certain that only actually trying to eat another would be the problem. Just touching one would be fine. …Especially if someone had already taken a bite of it.
Will just stood there in silence, staring at the box where the fruit had still remained. He certainly had seemed like a quite confident man who wasn't afraid of anything, and yet, here they were. A crack on that tough persona he had put on, or something else?

He had heard the rumors, the legends and stories of Devil Fruits, and what they would do to those who had already ingested one. Some of those stories were quite… Colorful and wild. But Will was quite certain that only actually trying to eat another would be the problem. Just touching one would be fine. …Especially if someone had already taken a bite of it.
Will just stood there in silence, staring at the box where the fruit had still remained. He certainly had seemed like a quite confident man who wasn't afraid of anything, and yet, here they were. A crack on that tough persona he had put on, or something else?

"Okay...should I...be worried?" Yugo chimed from the bed, while he was kind of restrained there by now he was perfectly healthy. He could now turn to the side to abserve the doctor go through the things and approach the box where he found his fortune meal, grab the chunk left of it and visibly recoil. Using his elbows to push himself up, Yugo took a peek at the box, managing to at least glimpse at the stem and the top of the now kinda mushy fruit.
"Yeah that's the one." He stated. "I remember it being more firm though...and it had a more metallic shine than that, almost reflective. From here it looks a little...opaque? Also, now that I think about it, it was incredibly heavy for something that looks like an orange."
Slumping back down, Yugo sighed. He was still with his legs up and the blood was beginning to get to his head. "Can you let me down now? I'm fine I told you...hey..." the shinobi called, seeing as the other guy was kind of spacing out for a moment. "Sensei, you doing alright? You know what the fruit is?"

Will kept standing there without a word, only managing to return back to the moment after the kid had been talking long enough. His ears had barely picked up what had been said, and it took a moment for the words to really register.
"Huh? Oh. Right," was his comment, quite bare bones compared to what he had mustered until now. Could it be? He had seen some very convincing fakes, after all, but…
The doctor looked back at his patient. He certainly seemed to be having some kind of actual physical symptoms that couldn't be easily explained. It definitely seemed to be like some sort of a power. Will's brow furrowed as he walked back to the kid and started removing the pillows propping his feet up.
"I can say that you are healing faster than you should. I can't say if you are actually healthy or if you should be running around without a worry in the world. Keep that in mind, even if you feel perfectly fine," the man started speaking, with some words of warning just in case. This had turned into a case where his experience and knowledge wasn't as much help, but he was still responsible for the kid's health.
"First of all, I would advice against eating such strange fruits. It is an entirely different thing if you have gone weeks without food, but in a couple of days… You don't starve. You could have easily caused more harm than good," Will continued with some further chastising as he sat down on the chair next to the bed and removed his glasses. His expression had been quite serious this whole time, but perhaps it was less… Annoyed now, as he made eye contact with the kid.
"Give me more details. About the whole story. Any other strange incidents or feelings with your body?"

"We were sailing as per usual on a trade vessel that had been doing the same voyage multiple times. Wind picked up in the afternoon, by night it was storming, we probably went off course there. I remember the captain trying to avoid the heart of the storm but the boat wasn't exactly maneuverable. I was stationed to guard the ship with a few more people, associates of the Lord I serve. There was no mention of the fruit in the cargo list, by the way but it wasn't smugged in, that much I know. Must have been a personal treasure. Storm picked up and thunder broke the mast, log pose was going crazy and the ship capsized and caught flames. There was some gunpowder on board for the cannon and so...boom. I found something to hold onto and avoid getting dragged down or mauled by sharks. Spent three days floating and woke up here. In the meantime I was aware I took a bite out of the fruit since the box floated near me and having food like that that could also be juicy would help with the lack of water. As I said a lot of times already the thing was awful tasting but at least kept me idrated and fed enough to make it despite loosing blood and staying in the water for long." Yugo detailed the wreck as best he could. The whole thing was hazy and spotty so there probably would be a lot of blanks to fill later on if he could. For now though, the doctor had something to work with.
"As far as my body goes, i told you. I'm fine...though now that I think about it is it just me or the temperature has changed? Like...I think it was colder just a few moments ago" He stated. "Juuust a tiny bit hotter...maybe one degree more?"
Yugo thanked the guy for getting him more comfortable. Now that his feet were not so high in the air it almost felt like his body was back to normal. "That's really it. Did my wounds look weird as they healed?"

Will just listened, not interjecting in the middle of the story. The kid certainly seemed to be doing better, compared to how he was when he was found by the beach. Maybe that was the point of making him talk, as the story itself didn't really give the doctor that much help. His eyes had started to wander, but they flicked back to the kid once he started to finish up his story and talk about the lack of strange feelings this far.
"…Well, we should keep an eye on your temperature then, I suppose. Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary about you externally. Internally… That I cannot say yet," Will mused. Even if the wounds healed, would any potential infections be removed as well? What kind of a fruit power could this even be? He honestly did not want to test the kid's healing factor…
"Say. Have you ever heard of something called a Devil Fruit?"

"A what now?" Yugo inquired, furrowing his brow. "Devil...fruit...Can't say I have." He would blabble on soon after. He might have heard something similar in the stories he heard on his island, but he was pretty sure there were no Devil fruit nowhere to be foun on Hoshima. He also was pretty sure that the Yokai of legend didn't create fruits to do their mischief or good. "My home island, Hoshima, is a trade port, we mostly go around the grand line, it is very rare we venture out there in the blues to trade. My Lord doesn't at the very least. Naturally, people and stories from beyond borders eventually arrived on our shore but never in my life I have heard of what a devil fruit is."
He stopped to consider the doctor's reaction, as well as what he said. If he connected the dots... "Are you implying I have ingested such a fruit? And what exactly does that entail for me? It heals me now and kills me later?"

So the kid hadn't heard of them. Will leaned back in his chair, his brow still furrowed – that probably was how he was getting his wrinkles, with the way they seemed to get deeper with his current expression. Then again, anyone who did know of the fruits probably wouldn't go eating one for sustenance, so that did add up.
"I see. They are pretty rare. You can easily go a lifetime without seeing one – or someone who has managed to eat one. Whether or not the general populace knows of their existence seems to depend on many things. Doesn't seem like it's too uncommon to have an entire island where they are basically unheard of."
That was the easy part. Will thought about how he would even continue after that for a moment, keeping quiet as his gaze seemed to shift slightly downwards. He wasn't really looking anywhere particular until he looked back at the kid on the bed and brought his own position forward.
"I can't really discern a fake from the real thing, of course. As far as nothing obvious happens, I can't say it is absolutely what happened. But eating one bestows people… Well, powers, I suppose would be the easiest way to put it. All kinds of powers, sometimes very strange. I would say such a healing factor I have witnessed could very well be a power of some sort," the doctor finally continued after his moment of silence,
"Will you die? Of course. Everyone does. With or without eating a Devil Fruit. Does the fruit itself kill you? Most likely not."

"So, let me get this straight...you are saying that. I have eaten a fruit and now I have some kind of magic ability?" Yugo mulled over what he had been told. How could that be, this was real life not some fairy tale, how could eating a fruit give you special powers?
"You...you do realize this sounds absolutely crazy yes? How would you even go about figuring out these supposed powers? Just throw yourself at a wall until you stumble on them? Doesn't exactly seem the most healthy thing to do." He stated. "Where exactly does this tale come from, and how can you be sure of it's veracity?"
Yugo has had enough of laying in bed. He was feeling great, thus he opted to sit up on the side, before realizing he was basically naked oitside his underwear. "I, uuh...toss me my Tabi boots and those bluish pants there please." He asked the doctor, pointing at some of the clothes there. It seemed that a spare outfit had been salvaged from the whole wreck, well some of it at least. He would have to improvise to cover his chest, but he didn't mind just sporting the fishnet shirt he usually wore underneath the leather armor. He certainly wasn't ashamed of his lithe body.
