[Episode] Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal
Fri Jan 15, 2021 5:11 pm
- Quest Request:
- Quest Name: Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal
Quest Category: Episode
Player Participants: Beatriz Victoria Hernandez (-4) and Miku Etsuko Sato(-4)
Planned Location(s): Centaurea
Planned Time Range: Between Feb 22 and Mach 7, 1829
Summary: Beatriz is called back to Centaurea in the middle of its civil war to screen a patient. Although initially reluctant, she agrees to take in a patient as a favor to her father. In Centaurea, Beatriz meets Miku who, after a bit of a situation with Lukman, agrees to proceed with the therapy session.
Somewhere Else:
Beatriz reread the letter the courier had brought to her with mixed feelings of dread and confusion. Her Father had done what? “Hijo de su (Son of a-)…” She would mutter as she slammed the door leading to her office. “If I-” A familiar head would peek through the now half-opened door. Beatriz wouldn’t notice until a quiet voice would pull her from her thoughts. “Doctora..?” Noting that the doctor was now of right mind, the woman would come in and close the door silently behind her as a worried expression clouded her delicate features. “Is everything alright?” Seeing her concerned assistant, Beatriz would immediately look up from the letter and shoot the woman a reassuring smile. “Ah, it’s really nothing.” The woman shot her an unimpressed look. Finally relenting, Beatriz would reply with a tired sigh. “It’s just my father. He… He wants me back in Centaurea.” This caused the woman to grow even more concerned. “Is he sick?” Beatriz would shake her head in response.
Beatriz would fold the letter into fourths and place it in the front pocket of her lab coat. “No.” Having the letter now secured on her person, the psychologist would make her way towards her desk and take a seat. She’d prop her elbows on the desk and press her forehead on the fist she had created with her intertwined fingers. “There’s a paciente (patient) who needs a look-over. Apparently Father talked too much and now they think I can help them solve their problems.” The woman looked at Beatriz in wide-eyed surprise before grinning like a madman. “But,” she would say through a feeble attempt to bite back her all-knowing grin “You told him you weren’t going back… right?” Beatriz winced causing the woman to shake in mildly controlled laughter. “And,” she would continue while attempting to calm herself down. “Even though you said that… He still told people you would come to help him with a special case?” Beatriz would give a nod in confirmation.
With no more willpower to hold back, the woman’s uncontrolled laughter would ring across the halls of the make-shift clinic. After a few moments of Beatriz’s annoyed hushing, the woman’s laughter would die down as she looked at the psychologist in mock worry. “What are you going to do?” Beatriz would crack a tired smile and shrug. “What can I do?” Beatriz would turn to look at her coworker with newfound determination. “If Papa (Dad) wants me back, I have no other choice but to go back.” The woman would nod in agreement. “I’ll go pack up your bags then.” Leaving the psychologist to her thoughts, the woman would turn and leave. However, she would do so without knowing the true extent of Beatriz’s worries. After all, Beatriz wasn’t going to go for a vacation or for a friendly visit. She was, in fact, summoned to work a special case in the middle of a civil war. Beatriz would turn her head to glare at the keepsake she had kept of her father. “Si me muero (If I die), it’s all your fault.” Oh, how she’d haunt him if she did.
Centaurea:
Despite her previous familiarity with Centaurea, Beatriz could honestly say that she felt very much like a foreigner in her own hometown. It had been much too long and, as a result, everything seemed odd and alien to her. She would glance around much like a fish out of water causing some passerbyers to stare at her warily. Beatriz would take note and flash them a smile. This seemed to surprise them and so she would watch them in concern as they scurried away. She frowned. From what she remembered, Centaurea had been a place crawling with deadbeats and thugs but, now, it seemed to have all been replaced with the flurry of townsfolk. Not that it changed the tense atmosphere of the place. Beatriz would clasp her suitcase tightly and make her way towards her father’s clinic. She had stayed there waiting for him for about half an hour like an idiot but he had never shown up. “When I see him…” she muttered under her breath as she hauled her items angrily. One thing was for sure, though, her father was still a jerk.
After a bit of walking, Beatriz would stop and ask for directions to which she received suspicious looks and mixed replies. It took a bit of time probing and, by the time she managed to head onto the right path, she was already frustrated with the earlier encounters. “Guess they weren’t lying…” Beatriz would say softly to herself. She had known somewhat about the current situation but she hadn’t realized the grand scale of it. From what the letters had told her, it hadn’t been this bad before. She’d have a talk with her father about it later. Beatriz would soon arrive and the tinkling of bells as she opened the clinic door washed over the young woman with a massive wave of nostalgia. “One moment!” A voice yelled out just before a clattering of items falling caught her attention. Beatriz would drop everything and rush into the back storage room to assist. However, she would find her father standing there sheepishly as paperwork and utensils were strewn across the floor all around him.
He’d make eye contact with her and move his hands rapidly to grab a container that laid half-open right beside him. “Help me sterilize them, mija (daughter).” He would push a box full of instruments towards her. “We don’t have all day.” Beatriz would roll her eyes as she took the box to one of the vacant rooms. “Good to see you, too, dad.” She would say just as she vanished into the hallway. It was to be expected, unfortunately. He cared for her, truly, but sometimes she wondered. “You finished yet?” Her father would yell from the other room. She growled a response. “I’ll take that as a yes,” He’d say as he came in and placed a bundle of paperwork by her side. “I need you to look over these files later. Sort them out by numerical order.” Beatriz would shoot him a glare as he disappeared from the room. If she hadn’t known better, she would have thought he had tricked her into coming back to work for him. She’d sigh and continue her work diligently. He’d tell her the reason she came, later… right?

[ seize life with your own hands ]
Sleep hadn’t been coming easy the past week for the captain of the Meddling Kids, Miku ‘Rowdy Rascal’ Sato. Leaving Centaurea the first time was difficult enough for the young woman knowing she left behind all the kids she’d been caring for, her second time leaving had been even more difficult. She had been forced to deal with a dark chapter of her past personally and believed she’d closed that part of her life for good. The Harvest was done. Sure some slave operations were probably still on the island but the Harvest specifically targeted the abandoned and uncared for youth of Centaurea, despicable. Miku had dealt with the source, taken his prized ship and made it a home to those like herself who suffered on Centaurea.
Less than a year later and Miku was back on Centaurea once again, and this time things were much worse. That monster, Croft, was not only alive but stronger than ever. He had managed to take control of the island while she was gone by subjugating nearly all the criminals of the island under himself creating a new ‘kingdom’ of his own on Centaurea. The same man who preyed from the shadows was now casting his own shade over her home. This thought caused a fury to swell up in Miku that she didn’t know how to deal with. She was tempted everyday to march towards his base and deal with him herself personally, and there were a couple times she almost did so.
The Rascal’s own crew along with the leaders of the Liberation group had talked her down but she was growing restless. The young woman was reaching a boiling point and wouldn’t be able to control herself if something didn’t happen soon, whether the operations planned were ready or not. Apparently it took more than cutting the head off of the tyrant king if the Liberation group were going to truly take control of Centaurea. It made sense to Miku once it was explained but it did nothing to cool the blazing fury she had in her.
This was apparent to everyone as the woman in question was being watched with caution from the townsfolk who happened to be on the street she was walking down. Beside her was the only person visible who didn’t seem affected by her seething and intimidating scowl, the lanky scholar Lukman. The pair were headed to an ‘important’ meeting but Miku hadn’t been given any more details beyond that. A fact that was adding to the Rascal’s foul temperament.
“Lots of people here.” Miku grumbled as she tried not to notice that everyone was looking at her as if she was their enemy. “As we’ve stated in our meetings, we are finally consolidating our forces. Of course, not everyone is a front line fighter, many families came along with our troops. After all, where else would they be safe? Lines have been drawn and it’s dangerous to leave your loved ones on the side you're marching against.” The calm explanation was spoken slowly and clearly.
Miku grunted to show that she understood and Lukman simply dropped the topic, he was quickly learning how to deal with the irritable captain. The pair finally slowed in their pace before stopping before a clinic that Miku wasn’t familiar with. “This is our stop for now.” Lukman said as he looked at the building as if it held some significant value to him. “Let’s head inside and see if our appointment is ready, hmm?” While it phrased like a question the man had already begun walking towards the entrance knowing Miku would follow. The short woman grumbled but did in fact follow him.
The pair walked through the front doors with a jingle, it seemed no one was at the receptionist desk and there wasn’t anyone else in the lobby. Lukman strode to the counter and stood there patiently, taking in his surroundings as he waited to see if the bells from their entrance would summon anyone to assist them. He had received a message that his request for the Rascal was finally read and he was looking forward to it, it was difficult to gain any insight into his little pirate without her temper taking over.
The whole time Miku stood near the entrance, uninterested in whatever Lukman had planned and figured he was just babysitting her. Miku wasn’t the smartest person around but she wasn’t stupid either, she knew the others were uneasy around her. She never had the best reputation on the island and she supposed her piracy at sea wasn’t doing much to prove herself to them. So the woman was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed across her chest, reading random signs hanging on the walls to keep herself distracted.

Re: [Episode] Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal

A few hours had passed when Beatriz finally completed the last of her tasks. Not that her father had been much help as he was busy reading a new mystery novel he had apparently been keeping up with. “Listo (Done),” she would say as she locked the metal cabinet closed. “That's the last of them.” Her father, without sparing a glance at her direction, would nod in approval. “I’m impressed.” He’d rub his chin thoughtfully, “It seems as if your small viaje (trip) hasn’t dulled your capabilities.” Beatriz would place the key in a hidden compartment just besides the cabinet. “Of course, not.” She’d reply smugly. “I actually travelled for work, thank you very much.” Her father would glance up briefly from his reading. “Cuidadito, chiquita (Careful, small one).” He’d narrow his eyes as he placed the book down. “Todavía soy tu padre (I am still your father), remember?” Beatriz would roll her eyes.
Her father would take the gesture as acknowledgment and give his daughter a wide grin. “Anyways, mija (daughter).” He pulled out a slim folder and handed it to her. “You’re paciente (patient) is coming over in a few more hours.” Beatriz would take the file and look it over. She would find that everything but the name was blank. She’d look at him incredulously. “Are you serious?” He would give her an enthusiastic nod, “It’s all there.” Beatriz would close her eyes and move her head upwards to face the ceiling. The folder would be closed immediately as she did her best to summon both the willpower and patience she would need to deal with her father. “Papa (Dad),” she tried again. This time her voice would be soft and soothing almost as if speaking to a misbehaving child. “There’s nothing here. It’s blank.” Her father would nod again. “I know.” He’d follow it up with a nonchalant shrug.
Beatriz would keep her eyes closed, counting her numbers down from ten, before opening them up. She would see her father holding out another file towards her. “EyAHAHA!” He’d bark out in laughter as soon as he made eye contact with her. “You should have seen your face!” She’d give him an unappreciative smile as she took the file. Beatriz would pull out the intake form and nod at it thoughtfully. “Interesting,” She would remark. “It seems the patient has a deep understanding of themselves.” Her father would grin back in response. “No, her guardian came in to book the appointment.” He’d gesture towards the files. “He filled them out, too.” Beatriz would look up from the form to her father and back. “That’s… that’s not how it works.” Her father would shrug causing Beatriz to frown. Still, regardless of how the information had been obtained, it was better than nothing. She only hoped it was correct.
It took a few more hours of hard work and labor but Beatriz could finally say that she was quite pleased with how things had turned out. Her patient’s room had been artfully arranged with just enough décor to consider it homely. This pleased her greatly as it definitely beat the basic white walls her father had in his other rooms. She nodded to herself in satisfaction. Hopefully, it would be enough for the patient to feel comfortable throughout the appointment. After all, her patients were of utmost priority. Beatriz would then busy herself with other mindless tasks. She’d had just gotten started when the tinkling of bells sounded throughout the clinic. Grabbing the already prepared clipboard, Beatriz would don her lab coat and make her way towards the front of the clinic. She could only assume that it was the patient she had been waiting for.
Making sure that she had everything she needed, she would walk out with all the confidence she could muster. “Thank you for waiting,” Beatriz would say with a smile as she emerged from the back. It hadn’t taken more than a couple minutes but hospitality was important. “I am Dr. Beatriz Hernandez but feel free to just call me Beatriz.” She’d smile at the duo as she moved towards the counter. She would start the initial meeting slowly in order to get them situated as, besides the basic information she had received, she knew nothing about them. “Would you both like something to drink before we get started?” Beatriz would give them a moment to reply. If they agreed, she’d be quick to fetch them refreshments. If not, she’d smile and turn to the young woman. “You must be Miss Sato.” Hopefully, she had assumed correctly. After all, the young brooding woman was the only one of the two that fit the registration information. “Are you ready to get started?”

[ seize life with your own hands ]
Miku had been expecting to wait for ten minutes at the least but was surprised to hear the sound of footsteps within a couple minutes of their entrance. Lukman on the other hand wasn’t surprised in the least when he saw a stylishly dressed woman with a lab coat emerge from further within the clinic. The tall man gave a friendly smile and nod at the woman he recognized to be Beatriz Hernandez, though he remained silent for her introduction. After all this was all for the benefit of his rowdy little pirate.
Rascal in question was eyeing the woman from across the room with a scrutinizing eye. Her gaze lingered on the clothing underneath the lab coat which contrasted with her introduction as a doctor. To Miku not many people dressed so loudly on Centaurea, it usually made you out to be someone notice and that was trouble. So far Miku wasn’t liking what she was seeing or the feeling beginning to form in her gut. Her eyes narrowed and shot to Lukman as she began to truly wonder about their true purpose here.
“Ah, I wouldn’t mind some water, Dr. Hernandez.” Lukman answered with a polite smile and tilt of his head as he received the bottled beverage. The man then turned to the side to allow Miku a chance to answer the doctor's question. Miku had pushed off of the wall and walked towards the counter with a distrusting scowl on her face. “I’m fine unless you have something stronger than water.” The young woman said as she faced the taller woman across the reception desk from her.
The frown only deepened when Beatrice referred to Miku as Ms. Sato. “Just Miku is fine. And I don’t even know what the hell we’re doing here.” As she said this her eyes once again slid accusingly towards Lukman. “I thought we were here for something you needed.” The man in question only smiled down at Miku and shook his head. His lack of a response only irritated Miku even more which reflected easily in her posture growing more rigid and her shoulders tensing up.
“What the hell is going on here?” The Rascal asked bluntly as her patience was growing short. Lukman took a long drink from his water and even gave a satisfied gasp of breath as if it was the most refreshing thing he’d drank in a while. Miku’s eye actually twitched as she waited with crossed arms. “You haven’t noticed, have you Miku?” The man finally said after slowly looking back to her with a relaxed air about him.
“Noticed what?!” Miku raised her voice, it wasn’t a shout but was well above what was appropriate for talking to someone within reach. “That.” Lukman said as he pointed at Miku simply enough. “You’ve been wound so tight that people are beginning to fear what will happen when you finally snap.” At this accusation Miku immediately opened her mouth only to stop when Lukman raised his hand in a silencing motion suddenly. It surprised the woman enough to cause her to pause which he then took advantage of.
“It’s not just my people saying this, your companions are worried as well. They all knew you would never agree to see a professional about this so I took it upon myself to do so.” Miku was flabbergasted at what she was hearing and could already feel the anger within her bubbling and festering as if she was kettle set over a roaring flame. “I understand that you feel a lot is riding on your strength, but we need you for more than just your fighting capability. If you wish to do the good you’ve set out to do then humor me just this once.”
The spectacled scholar had a serene look on his face as he waited for a response. Miku was beyond upset and even felt a tinge of betrayal at hearing that those she’d traveled with had been speaking behind her back. A mirror off to the side of the reception room caught her attention and she saw herself in it. Her face was set in a hard scowl with eyes that were so fierce they reminded her of the eyes of those she would so often fight against. An errant thought crossed her mind as she stared at her own reflection. ‘Where was the ever present cocky smile and devil-may-care attitude she’d once been known for?’
Miku didn’t know the answer and that thought frightened her. After staring at her reflection for an awkward amount of time she frowned and turned to the two taller adults in the room. “Fine. Let’s do whatever this is.” The woman refused to look the two others in the eyes but was obviously willing to follow them wherever they needed her to go.

Everything had been proceeding smoothly until Beatriz called her patient by name. It wasn’t a mistake that she had made that floored her but, rather, the blatant manifestation of perplexion and puzzlement that the patient displayed towards her. Beatriz would lift her eyes towards the woman’s companion in a questioning gaze. Surely, he had made mention of this. Had he not? As far as she knew, he had been given quite a long time to bring up the appointment to his young companion. Beatriz, after all, had taken quite a journey to reach Centaurea. It was no easy feat much less time consuming. The psychologist would then shift her gaze towards the young woman. It was evident that she had no clue. Beatriz would watch silently as the woman’s body language switched to a more aggressive tone. If the patient wished to stay, Beatriz would make sure to note this situation. After all, this was all important for the patient's overall mental health.
Miku’s voice would soon rise an octave higher to which her companion would pay no mind. As a psychologist, it concerned Beatriz that the young woman had been unaware of the appointment and led to it under false pretenses. If anything, it truly showed the trust the patient, Miku, had towards the man when, in all reality, the man’s concern contrasted the trust he might have supposedly had towards her. Regardless, it was something Beatriz viewed as unhealthy in the duo’s relationship. It also helped her to understand the patient’s reason to lash out. Most people, after all, would naturally grow upset when finding out that the people they trusted were plotting things behind their backs. However, as the woman’s fury grew, Beatriz wondered if this was an occurrence that stemmed from previously instilled behavior or if recent circumstances had shaped her. Perhaps, both. The only evident thing now was that Miku had learned to use anger as a form of defense.
Nevertheless, Beatriz would remain watching from the sidelines. From what she could see before her, the man would take the lead of the one sided confrontation and spin it around. A true smooth talker but, based on the situation at hand, it was needed. However, if he were to need the help, she would step in. Yet, as the time went on, he seemed to have expertly controlled and diffused the situation beautifully. He had reasoned with the young woman until, finally, he had managed to reach her. Miku would then take a brief moment for herself before seemingly resigning herself to her fate. Although this was not how Beatriz advised patients to be brought in, it was clearly evident that Miku needed a guiding hand. Why the man had decided against being that person, Beatriz had no clue nor did she wish to know. Now, it was her responsibility to make sure the patient received the help she needed to move away from the aggression she had enclosed herself within.
Now that the patient had finally conceded, Beatriz would take the opportunity to proceed with the appointment. She, however, would not comment on the outburst that had just occurred nor would she show that it affected her. Instead, she would leave it up for discussion during the session. “Please follow me, Mi..- ku.” Beatriz would say as she politely indicated for the young woman to follow her. She hoped that the fumbled name would be missed. Moreso as she was trying to adhere to the young woman’s wish of being addressed simply by her first name. “Once you get situated, we’ll be ready to begin.” Having reached the designated room, Beatriz would hold the door wide open. “Feel free to take a seat anywhere you feel most comfortable in.” Beatriz would leave the decision up to Miku. She found, after all, that people were more prone to speak when they felt they had power over their own decisions.
Beatriz would motion her hand towards a small desk in order to bring attention to the beverages placed neatly on top. “There’s bottled water on the desk for you as well in the case you change your mind.” She made sure to acknowledge the woman’s previous refusal but, from experience, Beatriz knew all too well how thirst had a funny way of appearing during stress. After the patient had taken a seat or, perhaps, decided to remain standing, Beatriz would pull one of the chairs over. She would place it just far enough so that the patient wouldn’t feel that she was intruding into her space and take a seat. “Before we get started, is there anything you would like to speak about?” She’d make eye contact with Miku and smile. “I’d also like to remind you that anything you say here will be kept confidential.” Beatriz stressed the importance of confidentiality. This was, after all, a place where patients would be able speak freely and express themselves.

[ seize life with your own hands ]
“I’ll leave you two to it, I shall be here waiting patiently.” Lukman said with a small smile directed at both ladies before him. He then pulled out a small journal along with a couple other parchments and missives from his satchel. “I have plenty to keep me busy, so please don’t feel any rush on my account.”
Miku gave him a glare before walking past him and following Doc Beatriz muttering under her breath just loud enough for the others to hear. “Like I care if you get bored.” She had obviously missed the slip in speech that Beatriz had made and simply followed the doctor and remaining silent. She didn’t give any response to Beatriz’s statements while they traveled down the hall and away from the room Lukman was in. Instead Miku let her eyes wander and explore her new setting, not necessarily looking for anything in particular but letting her natural curiosity dictate her attention.
Once the pair reached the ‘designated’ room Miku took a look around, considering if she should take the offer or refuse out of spite. A part of her wanted to remain standing just to be difficult but she knew there was no reason to take out her irritation at Lukman with the Doc. So Miku slowly walked towards the desk that seemed to be for patients and sat in the chair that was clearly paired with it.
The woman eyed the water before rolling her eyes and ignoring it, remaining silent as she was still uncomfortable and unsure as to what this was really about anyway. Was this some sort of check up for her health? A physical exam that she’d heard about when visiting other doctors, usually she just demanded to get fixed and nothing else. The Rascal didn’t see any medicine around or other drugs that were meant for her. Although as she finished searching the room Miku’s eyes landed back on Doc Beatriz who had pulled up a chair and was seated just a few feet away from her.
The young woman crossed her arms but leaned back in the chair, the tenseness in her shoulders relaxing slightly now that it was just the two of them. “Before we get started, is there anything you would like to speak about?” This question confused Miku and the direct eye contact didn’t really bother her at all, it just made her feel dumb for not understanding it. While she was mulling over the question Doc Beatriz gave a follow up statement about how their talk wouldn’t be shared. That also confused Miku but she had heard of patient doctor confidentiality, though she’d never really thought it applied beyond ‘don’t tell the local authorities you fixed up a criminal’.
After a few moments of silent contemplation, in which Miku looked away while thinking, she finally decided to ask her question as it was obvious Doc Beatriz wouldn’t continue doing whatever she was supposed to be doing. “Yeah, I guess you can tell me what exactly we are doing?” Miku said as she made eye contact with the doctor easily enough. “I know you’re supposed to help me with my,” the woman stopped to mull over the word she was going to use next, “not snapping.” The young woman put it bluntly since she wasn’t even sure how a doctor was supposed to help with that.
“Are you going to give me some medicine to help with relaxing or something? I think I’ve heard of stuff like that. Don’t see how it’s much different from just drinking though.” Miku added as she finally looked away and back to the water before looking away with a small shake of her head. Almost as if she disapproved of it still being just plain water.

Re: [Episode] Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal

The patient’s confusion was evident as Beatriz began to open up the session for light conversation. It was understandable considering how Miku hadn’t known about the appointment prior to arriving at the psychologist’s temporary office. It was something she still wasn’t all too happy about but, regardless, the session would be to address Miku’s issues and not her companion’s. As the psychologist began to draw to a close, Beatriz would sit back and patiently watch as the young woman looked away briefly. She would give the patient a few moments of silence in order to allow her to collect and sort out her thoughts. If the silence remained for much longer, however, Beatriz would jump in to continue the flow of the conversation.
After having seemingly come to terms with her thoughts, Miku would begin by asking for an explanation of the very basics. “Yeah, I guess you can tell me what exactly we are doing?” Beatriz would nod in a gesture of acknowledgement. She would attempt to reply once Miku had finished saying her part. “I know you’re supposed to help me with my…” There was a slight break in conversation before continuing, “Not snapping.” Beatriz nodded again. This time, however, it would be in agreement. It seemed as if the patient had been more receptive than she had previously thought. It was all to the patient’s benefit which made Beatriz quite happy with the development. Even if the prior incident had played a tremendous role in all of this.
Before Beatriz could enter a word, Miku went on. “Are you going to give me some medicine to help with relaxing or something?” Beatriz lifted her lips into a half smile but said nothing. If she had a beri for every time she heard that question, she could have been quite rich. “I think I’ve heard of stuff like that.” Beatriz wasn’t surprised. Psychiatrists and psychologists were often mixed up. “Don’t see how it’s much different from just drinking though.” The patient would finally reach her conclusion as she broke away and looked at the water in disapproval. Although brief, a twinkle of amusement would appear in the psychologist’s eyes. It looked like she had her work cut out for her.
When Miku shook her head, Beatriz would reply in turn. It seemed that she would have to restart from the beginning. “Let me reintroduce myself,” Beatriz began with a kind and patient smile. This seemed like the best place to start. “I’m Beatriz and I’m a psychologist here.” She wouldn’t mention her place of residence as it tended to change from time to time. “What my overall job tends to be is to have a one on one conversation with patients and go over anything they’d like to speak about. In this case, you.” She hoped the oversimplification would help Miku understand. “This can be over a number of different things and I act like a sort of guide.” Beatriz grinned inwardly. She had to admit she sort of liked the analogy.
The psychologist continued with the explanations. “During these sessions, we can explore situations like today’s encounter and go over why you reacted in a certain way as well as how you felt.” She touched briefly upon the previous incident so as to provide Miku with a recent example. “Like I mentioned earlier, this would all remain between you and me.” Beatriz reinforced the confidentiality she maintained with her patients. In all honesty, this was what she considered to be the most important factor when it came to her sessions. Trust was very important when it came down to it. “We can also talk about other things that are on your mind, too.” Sessions were, after all, composed of open discussions.
Beatriz would make sure to touch upon Miku’s earlier remark. “I also don’t prescribe medications.” Beatriz, for one, wasn’t a big believer in them. Unless, of course, certain conditions forced her hand to refer them out to a psychiatric unit. “Think of me as more of a counselor or an advisor.” If it came down to it, she hoped this version of thought would help the patient understand. “I’m here to listen to anything you’d like to talk about.” Beatriz would take the opportunity to open up the file folder that was on her lap. “We’ll take things step by step to help you better understand yourself. We can also work on things you’d like to improve upon.” Of course, this would all depend on whether or not the patient was willing.

[ seize life with your own hands ]
The Rascal simply sat back in her chair as Doc Beatriz reintroduced herself, something that she wasn’t sure was necessary. Although the addition of ‘psychologist’ definitely piqued the Rascal’s interest. Weren’t psychologists what they sent people to if they were crazy? The woman visibly bristled at the thought but was held back by Doc Beatriz continuing to explain what they were supposed to be doing. Despite her desire to cut in, Miku remained silent since she had asked and was actually being given a straight answer instead of the cryptic bull that Lukman usually fed her.
Miku slowly nodded her head along, still slightly on edge from her deductions earlier, and was starting to understand what was supposed to be going on here. Not really understanding the purpose for it but the actual ‘what’ of what they were supposed to do. When Doc Beatriz referenced the exchange Miku and Lukman had in the reception area the woman in question looked away with an obvious scowl.
Doc Beatriz’s insistence on ‘confidentiality’ wasn’t lost on Miku, she was being very blunt with it. The woman didn’t really understand why it was being emphasized so much but it did make her feel slightly better. Not that she could really explain why it was making her feel that way. When Doc Beatriz mentioned possibly talking about other things Miku actually looked away again in thought. Quick flash of thoughts that had been haunting her for months now, especially since what happened at Las Camp. The pressure of what she was trying to do, the reality of what she was dragging the Meddling Kids into on a more regular basis, the close calls she’d experienced and barely survived.
These thoughts were interrupted when the Doc continued by explaining how she didn’t actually give medicine. In the end it was all just a long way to say this was some weird counseling session, like kicking back and just shooting the shit with her crew. Just with much less booze. At the end of it all Miku felt less on edge, nothing in that did Doc Beatrize mention that she was being checked if she was crazy. ‘Though with what we get into sometimes it’s not an unreasonable thing to ask… I guess.’
“Okay, I sorta get it. Kinda.” Miku said after a couple moments of thought. “So, I get to choose what we talk about? I don’t know…” The young woman was unsure and it showed on her face. “There’s a lot going on. We’re supposed to be planning a raid on some stockpiles that are supposed to have plenty of weapons for the people.” Miku said while narrowing her eyes and trying to remember the details everyone assumed she forgot. “I know our people have no training, most of them have little to no experience fighting, let alone killing.” Miku’s eyes widened slightly as she remembered the bloody night of her return. She stopped crossing her arms and gripped the ends of each arm of her chair.
“Except them.” Miku said more to herself as she remembered Karl’s damning words and the weight of that night pushing her to drink herself to sleep. She looked to the water again but her mind was obviously somewhere else. “Then there’s the warehouses full of prisoners and people for sale.” Miku’s eyes narrowed and her fingers grasped tightly to the end of her armrests. “That bastard Croft is STILL dealing in people.” Miku’s voice shook as she stared aimlessly and her face contorted in anger. “I wanted to go right over there and free them but… but..” Miku closed her eyes, grit her teeth, and started taking a few deep breaths to control her seething anger. She could feel an outburst coming but she remembered the reasons she couldn’t go. “But I risk everyone there if I just charge in. Makes sense. Doesn’t mean I like it.” Miku bit out the last bit and quickly swiped the water from the counter and held it angrily.
The woman then took a quick swig from the drink before slamming it back down on the counter causing the liquid within to slosh over the side and drip onto the countertop. She still felt the anger swelling inside her but she was finally able to temper it with sheer willpower and looked back to Doc Beatriz. It was then that Miku realized she’d just started ranting without allowing the Doc to get a word in at all.
“Uh, there’s a lot going on…” Miku said again with much less conviction as she looked away uncomfortably.

Re: [Episode] Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal

Once Beatriz had finished explaining things, she was delighted when Miku would respond favorably. It helped considering the fact that this was a spur of the moment occurrence for the patient. “Okay, I sorta get it. Kinda.” Miku said, causing Beatriz to smile. “So, I get to choose what we talk about? I don’t know…” The psychologist nodded in response. There was a bit of uncertainty that the patient displayed but Beatriz understood it completely. After all, it was not easy to talk to a complete stranger. However, Beatriz would be more than happy to provide a topic of conversation if Miku appeared to be stuck. Not that the patient gave her time to as she would respond shortly thereafter. “There’s a lot going on.” Miku said as her facial features changed to reflect contemplation. It was a good start and so Beatriz remained silent.
Miku’s next words, however, would catch her off guard. “We’re supposed to be planning a raid on some stockpiles that are supposed to have plenty of weapons for the people.” Beatriz blinked but said nothing. It appeared as if Miku had taken the confidentiality aspect of her explanation quite seriously. To have jumped straight from being a complete stranger to that of a confidant, Beatriz couldn’t help but wonder if it was in Miku’s nature to be quite open. It was something that had quite surprised her considering that she had believed MIku had never attended a session before. Then, again, she could have misunderstood. “I know our people have no training, most of them have little to no experience fighting, let alone killing.” Beatriz nodded over so slightly. It seemed as if Miku had a role to play in the upcoming civil war.
Besides the occasional nod, Beatriz continued to remain silent as she allowed Miku to take the reins of the conversation. However, she had no clue as to what most of what her patient said referred to. All she could do was gather words and attempt to piece them together. It helped that her father had kept her up to date with Centaurea’s current affairs. “Except them.” Unfortunately, Beatriz was unable to guess who the ‘them’ referred to. What she could gather, on the other hand, was Miku’s change of expression and the shift in her movements. It was obvious that this was something that weighed heavily on her mind and, yet, there seemed to be something more. “Then there’s the warehouses full of prisoners and people for sale.” Beatriz would allow her smile to disappear as Miku would bring up the slave trade.
Human trafficking was a regular occurence in Centaurea which, unfortunately, played a large role in the people’s lives. Thus, trauma was quite common in these parts and Miku appeared to be no different. How she handled it, however, Beatriz could quite clearly see that aggression was her primary method of coping. Nevertheless, she would note that Miku’s anger didn’t seem to become displaced straight away on those that were in near proximity to her. It indicated to her that the young woman still had a bit of self control left which was a good start. On the other hand, it also meant that there was no guarantee that it couldn’t devolve into something beyond Miku’s control. Thus, Beatriz would need to see how much the patient’s coping mechanisms had devolved and how affected she was in regards to it.
As Miku’s gestures became even more pronounced, Beatriz would shift her focus to her patient’s hands. She’d make a mental note of how they seemed to cling to the chair’s armrest which was a behavior that the psychologist often associated with high levels of anxiety and distress. Whether that correlated to fear, Beatriz still needed to dig in further. After all, they were just beginning to scratch the surface of what made Miku… well, Miku. Beatriz would then shift her eyes back to Miku’s face. She;d watch how her eyes would become more expressive as her story went on. For now, she would give Miku the chance to let it all out. From there, she would be able to plan out what the best course of action would be if Miku decided to continue with the sessions further.
“That bastard Croft is STILL dealing in people.” At the mention of the name, Beatriz did her best not to let her expression falter. It was a name that she had long come to recognize when she had lived in Centaurea many years ago. He was infamous for his role in human trafficking but, like most corrupt places, he had been free to do whatever it was he wanted. Thus, it always left a sour taste in her mouth whenever she heard he was involved. He had, after all, been the one to- Beatriz would force her thoughts away from her growing anger. She was, after all, in the middle of the session. Thankfully, her thoughts hadn’t taken much time away from listening to the conversation. “...free them but… but..” Miku’s expression would shift and Beatriz would give her an encouraging look.
Whether or not Miku had acknowledged the gesture, Beatriz wasn’t all too sure but the patient continued on regardless. “But I risk everyone there if I just charge in.” There seemed to be a brief moment of self reflection soon after. “Makes sense. Doesn’t mean I like it.” Beatriz gave her a small smile. Although she, herself, had no clue where this was all coming from, it was still very valuable considering how much her patient seemed to willingly give away. It also gave the psychologist a lot of things to work with. However, it seemed as if Miku had gotten self conscious during the process. “Uh, there’s a lot going on…” The patient finished off uncomfortably after having angrily taken out her frustrations on the poor water bottle. It caught Beatriz a little bit by surprise but they were making great progress.
The psychologist would give Miku a small sympathetic smile. “It seems as if you’ve been given a huge responsibility,” Beatriz would start. If her hunch was correct, then it seemed as if this stemmed from something much deeper than just a passing memory. “Have you talked to anyone else about what you’re going through?” Despite the seemingly innocent question, Beatriz would be receiving a lot of information depending on how Miku answered that particular inquiry. It would show her not only how much she was open about her feelings but it would also give Beatriz the sense of where Miku stood in all of this. “Has what you’re going through made you feel guilty or helpless in any way?” What Beatriz was most concerned about was that Miku was undergoing depression.
Overall, what Beatriz hoped for was that Miku would answer honestly. Miku had already begun to open up which delighted Beatriz. However, she needed to access the patient’s state of mind before jumping right into the thick of things. If the emotions that guided Miku were primarily something that stemmed from anger, then it was something that needed to be talked about even if to provide Miku with a small sense of understanding and relief. The psychologist would clasp her lap as she gave Miku her full attention. “You spoke about the people helping you with the raid,” Beatriz would continue. “How did you meet them? Has their presence been something that adds to your worry? Aside from their lack of expertise?” The woman would pause now that she had asked her initial questions. She would give Miku the space to respond.

Re: [Episode] Sessions with La Patrona: The Rascal

[ seize life with your own hands ]
The Rascal was still looking away when Doc Beatriz finally responded after her rant. A part of Miku knew she shouldn’t have said what she had but it wasn’t like she gave any real details plus it wasn’t like any of Croft's thugs could stop her. They were all weak, the only problem was the constant threat they had over the people still under their influence. Miku couldn’t be everywhere at once and she was only growing more and more aware of that fact. It was something that had been eating away at her for the past couple months now. Since Las Camp at least.
When Doc Beatriz asked Miku if she had ever shared any of this with anyone the young woman instinctively scoffed. “Who would I tell? Everyone looks to me to know what to do and get them through it. I can’t.” It was a stupid question and one that made Miku bristle uncomfortably. The next question caused Miku to freeze cold for a second before she exploded out her answer. “I’M NOT HELPLESS!” The young pirate captain shouted, half standing in her seat having used the arms of the chair to propel herself forward. The girl immediately sat back down and looked away, distress on her face mixed with anger. She remained silent on the subject.
Thankfully Doc Beatriz decided to not pursue that for the moment and further inquired about what she had mentioned before. It was a topic she was much more comfortable with and she decided to focus on that for the moment, ignoring her outburst.
“You know that anyone who has any form of strength or power either gets the hell off of Centaurea or follows the path of being an asshole and preying on those who are weak. It's just how it is. Well I guess I broke that trend twice now. The last time I did that I took down Croft and got myself his ship and a crew willing to join me based on nothing but the fact that I took that bastard down and had a ship that needed hands. So now I came back once again but I guess some people took notice before I hit the shore. So they found me at Henrietta's, uh, she’s a friend who runs a small inn and breakfast.” Miku quickly explained before continuing. “That’s where Lukman and his friends found me, but it wasn’t just them.” The girl stopped there as memories of the following events flashed through her head. The cries of the people whose hands he bloodied by forcing them to prove themselves. ‘No, I didn’t force them. I offered them a choice.’ Miku told herself but she felt less confident in that with each passing day.
“Anyway, they made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse.” The young woman continued on as if she never paused awkwardly. “I help them get rid of Croft, and we maybe turn Centaurea into a proper home that isn’t just something to run the hell away from. Lukman and his friends all have plans to try and fix this place up, won’t be anytime soon but it’s a start.” Miku’s voice softened as she finished the tag line they’d used on her and her crew at their first official meeting.
The Rascal sunk into her chair a bit as she thought about the possibility of Centaurea not being a shit hole that she was ashamed of. “They don’t worry me, they seem genuine. Most of them at least, but that’s better than what we have now. It’s the lack of people who know what it’ll take to make this all happen. Like I said, anyone who has any strength is either gone or over with Croft now. Except me and my crew. No pressure.” A sigh escaped the captain’s lips as she finished waited a beat before adding one last comment. "People are going to die, Doc."

Miku scoffed at her question which immediately let Beatriz know where exactly the patient stood on the spectrum. “Who would I tell? Everyone looks to me to know what to do and get them through it. I can’t.” Beatriz nodded slowly at Miku’s outburst. ‘Aye, que Dios me ayude (Aye.. May God help me)...’ The psychologist silently thought to herself, trying to hold back a sigh. It was a common misconception many people in leadership often had. They viewed themselves as unable to give into weakness which meant they often bottled things up. Even if speaking about such topics had nothing to do with frailty.
These preconceived notions, however, were very detrimental to one's own mental health which, unfortunately, led them to… well, she looked up at Miku, alcanzar sus limites (reach their limit). Thus, having even just one confidant was enough to get them on the right track for their mental health. Of course, they also needed to be the right person for the patient to talk to. Lukman, quite frankly, would not be her go to person as someone for Miku to rely on. Simply by his mannerisms and gestures, that alone gave her a bad feeling. On the other hand, it also meant that Miku needed new friends and/or regular visits to her office.
Turning towards the matter at hand, Beatriz further decided to probe for more details. It would not take long, however, for Miku to push back. “I’M NOT HELPLESS!” Her patient shouted. Beatriz stayed silent as her patient shot up from her seat like a bullet. Clearly, she had hit a nerve. Beatriz, however, made no attempt to correct Miku. Sure, she had never called Miku helpless but emotional triggers gave no rhyme or reason. They were simply words that some patients zero-ed in on. Saying anything else on the matter would make them quite defensive. That, of course, was something Beatriz was trying to avoid.
On the other hand, these triggers provided much information for her to work with as they played heavily on one’s insecurities and fears. It was evident that pursuing this further would only serve to break what little trust the patient had given her. Although not much, Beatriz had made some progress that she did not want to lose. Thus, for now, the psychologist chose to move towards a different direction so as to avoid the patient closing herself off. However, she made a mental note to come back to the subject at a later date. With this in mind, she turned her attention to something else Miku had mentioned - her aliados (allies).
However, Mithu’s response was a bit unexpected. Not that she blamed her for having quite a straightforward view of Centaurea and its people. It was, after all, one of the reasons why Beatriz had left her hometown to work in the slums. Furthermore, it was a known fact that both the World Government and the Marines did nothing to provide aid. To make matters worse, they were often the ones who kept the traffickers going by providing them support to squash all over the will of the people. It was up to those willing to fight in their own way that the rest survived. However, these thoughts were not helpful to the session at hand.
Miku continued. “So now I came back once again but I guess some people took notice before I hit the shore.” Beatriz let a small frown slip. It sounded rather odd hearing from someone else that they were being tracked. Or, in other words, being spied upon. However, it did not seem as if her patient found it odd so Beatriz let her continue. Asking her questions regarding the incident would come later. “That’s where Lukman and his friends found me, but it wasn’t just them.” Beatriz nodded in understanding. It was obvious that this was a traumatic memory for her.
There seemed to be a momentary break in reality for Miku before she jumped ahead in her story. “Anyway, they made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse.” Beatriz nodded. If she thought the whole thing wasn’t fishy before, it sure was now. It seemed quite clear that Lukman was the mastermind of all this. As to why he needed Miku, Beatriz figured it was better off not to involve herself further into this mess. “I help them get rid of Croft, and we maybe turn Centaurea into a proper home that isn’t just something to run the hell away from.” Beatriz blinked a few times. Such idealistic thoughts but Beatriz knew reality didn’t work that way.
However, Miku was entitled to her own thoughts and opinions. Beatriz’s only role was to make sure that the young woman was in a good state of mind and mentally healthy. “Lukman and his friends all have plans to try and fix this place up, won’t be anytime soon but it’s a start.” Beatriz stopped short from raising an eyebrow. Instead she shifted her gaze at the patient’s intake form. Miku was still quite young and, perhaps, easily impressionable. One thing was for certain, however, the young woman had a strong attachment to Centaurea and faith that it could be restored. But, at the expense of what?
Miku sighed after having mentioned the lack of strength on her side. Whether or not it came from a place of defeat or resignation, Beatriz had yet to find out. Whatever the outcome, it was clear that it was playing a heavy toll on the young woman. "People are going to die, Doc." Miku concluded. Beatriz nodded in affirmation. It was something she could not deny as it was a fact of life. Although, at times, a necessity, war often came with no clear winners. Death and destruction followed both sides. Trauma and desolation more often than not accompanied them. It was only through faith and belief that helped those in it continue to fight on.
“Has Lukman and his crew included you in their planes (plans), eh… renovation plans? Is that something you feel will work towards Centaurea’s future?” Beatriz made sure to say ‘feel’ rather than ‘believe.’ It was a subtle way of asking her what she truly believed in her gut. The mind, after all, could be easily convinced but the innate feeling one had inside could not. As per Lukman’s mention, it was Beatriz’s indirect way of seeing how much the patient was involved in their plans and how much trust Miku had placed on them. Perhaps, Miku’s insecurities came from not knowing what she was fighting for or for whom she was fighting for.
The best case scenario, of course, was that Miku knew exactly what she had at stake and the outcome that would come from pursuing Lukman’s goals. It would mean that her triggers came from second guessing herself in other matters pertaining to the upcoming battle. After all, it wasn’t Miku that had established their path but, rather, it was the man who seemingly had been waiting for her to arrive. Beatriz immediately dispersed the thought. ‘¿En qué me metí (What did I get myself into)...?’ She thought to herself. No wonder her father had referred to her. She was an outsider. Someone who had nothing to lose in Centaurea.
Of course, this didn’t deter Beatriz from doing her job. “Why is this so important to you?” She figured she would start easy before hitting with a hard question. Open-ended questions would give Miku time to speak her mind before delving in deeper. “Have you ever thought of abandoning your role in this war or giving it to someone else, even if, momentarily?” She trained her eyes on Miku in order to catch any subtle hints. “You mentioned that many strong people sided with Croft. Why didn’t you?” Beatriz would give Miku time to collect her thoughts if she needed to and speak.

[ What is Strength? ]
“Has Lukman and his crew included you in their planes (plans), eh… renovation plans? Is that something you feel will work towards Centaurea’s future?” Miku let the question hang in the air while she thought about an answer for the Doc. Her mind played back several meetings she had already attended with Lukman and those in charge of organizing everything. Of course she’d tried her best to pay attention and even contribute if they asked her opinion but she felt constantly out of her depth. The talk of overarching goals, logistics, possible outcomes, contingency plans, ‘acceptable losses’. It was all a bit much for her to pick up on and run with right away. It reminded her of her lack of education and just how inexperienced she was at times. As for how she felt about it? She felt like this was her best chance to get rid of a mistake she left behind and to maybe plant the seeds for a better Centaurea.
“Yeah, they’ve tried their best to keep me around for the meetings. Not that I can really help them with any of that, I got the same amount of educating as most of the street kids of Centaurea.” Miku stated this fact with a small amount of shame, knowing her lack of knowledge had gotten her into trouble several times in her travels. “Not that I don’t try, it’s just frustrating having to rely on others for this stuff.” The young woman was looking off to the side, trying to keep herself calm.
“I don’t know if it’ll work, Doc. I want it to work and this feels like a chance to do something about it. I don’t even know if this movement began after I left or if I was just too blind to see it happening around me. I’ve come to realize there was so much I didn't know when I first left home. How blind I was just trying to survive day by day with my kids.” Miku’s attention focused back down in her lap where her fists rested, squeezed tight as she reminded herself about her adoptive siblings she’d left behind. She still hadn’t managed to get back in touch with any of them since returning to the island.
“Why is this so important to you?” The question was simple and Miku had an easy answer. “Because this is my home.” She replied instantly but immediately realized it felt too simple once said out loud. The Rascal took a moment before expanding on her answer. “I mean, it’s more than just that. This island is home to people I care about, and those people have families and friends here they care about. So if I just leave it all behind then I’m abandoning them again.” With that elaboration Miku decided it would do for now.
“Have you ever thought of abandoning your role in this war or giving it to someone else, even if, momentarily?” A small chuckle escapes Miku’s lips upon hearing this question. Of course she’d thought about giving this all up. Just sailing away and finding a new place to call home or just making her ship her home instead. Turns out it wasn’t so easy for her to completely let go of her past. “I think about it all the time, Doc. I think about how it’d be so easy to just hop back on my ship and sail away from this hellhole. Let someone else take care of it. After all, no one fixed this place for me or mine when we were suffering." The young woman’s ire finally faded and was replaced with a cold detachment. Unfocused eyes stared into nothing as she contemplated. “But then I become part of the problem, don’t I? Just another person who can do something but then chooses to abandon the misfortunate and powerless to continue to wallow in their own despair.”
The young woman finally looked back up at Doctor Beatriz and had a sad smile on her face. “I’m tired of abandoning people, Doctor. I’m tired of running away from all my problems. I thought I was doing something different from everyone else when I first left but it was made clear to me that I was just a child throwing a tantrum out at sea.” Miku felt as if even admitting this out loud caused her physical pain but it was a conclusion she had reached after nearly getting herself and her crew killed. “I didn’t have a purpose or goal that I was pursuing. I was just looking for trouble for the sake of trouble. Don’t know if that makes sense, it might still be just me not getting it, but I need to try.”
“You mentioned that many strong people sided with Croft. Why didn’t you?” At this final question Miku tilted her head to the side and gave her answer with narrowed eyes. “Because my mother didn’t raise me to be a monster.” As soon as she said this Miku quickly stopped herself from continuing as she realized she’d brought up her mother by accident. It was a topic she never broached with others and one she didn’t feel like talking about right now. “I mean, people like him were the boogeyman to me and the kids. I don’t plan on being the next horror story that keeps the next generation hiding under their blankets.”
