[Episode] Breaking Family Bonds
Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:45 pm
- Episode Description:
- Quest Name: Breaking Family Bonds
Quest Category: Episode
Player Participants: Adonis Dimiourgikós Ynami [+0] and Ebony Mirrikh d’Etth [+0]
Planned Location(s): Baterilla
Summary: Ebony is given a mission from her father to “take care” of a few people who trespassed into their territory and are causing trouble. While she readily accepts the task, she wonders if staying in the family business is what she really wants. Once preparations are set, she heads out and takes Adonis with her.
Skarlet:
Long, slim fingers drummed irritably against the corner of the coffee table whilst a young man talked endlessly before her. It had been quite some time since she had sat down and, yet, she was no closer to finding out the reason for her summon. All she knew was that she had been asked to meet the young man as soon as possible under the pretense of “life-changing news.” It had seemed urgent and so she immediately had agreed. Unfortunately, all she was hearing now was the endless prattle of small talk and the honeyed compliments sprinkled intelligently throughout his nonstop chatter. The young woman sighed inwardly. Closing her eyes briefly, she could only hope that patience would come back a-knocking. If he hadn’t sworn it was important, she would have long left by now.
A good amount of time had passed when Skarlet decided that drumming was not a good way to quell her growing irritation. In fact, she believed it was now making it worse. She opted to, instead, avert her attention to the drink before her. She reached out and wrapped her fingers delicately around the smoothness of the porcelain handle. She was sure the drink was cold by now but, for the meantime, it would help her tolerate the young man for just a bit longer. Bringing the cup to her lips, she nodded absentmindedly as the sweet taste of chocolate filled her senses. It was good. Lukewarm, but good. This, however, seemed to encourage the young man as he enthusiastically continued all the more. By this point, Skarlet was done. “Mike,” she butted in coolly. “What exactly is this news you promised me?”
This snapped the young man from his reverie. He grinned sheepishly at the woman as he absentmindedly fidgeted with the napkin before him. “Right…” He trailed off unsure of where to start. “Remember Daniel?” Skarlet nodded. How could she forget? He was a publisher. One of the big ones, too. “He offered us a deal for one of your books. Might even pay for a series if he likes it, too.” This captured the young woman’s interest. “But, there’s a catch.” Skarlet frowned, silently urging her editor to continue. “He wants something new. Something unexpected.” He clasped his hands and leaned forward. “He wants romance.” Almost immediately, Skarlet scowled. She wasn’t one to dabble in romance and Michael knew it very well.
As if on cue, Micheal quickly cut into her thoughts. “It’ll be a nice change, Skarlet!” He reasoned. “It could help expand your reader base, too.” This did nothing to appease her mood and, yet, her poor editor still tried. “It’s getting popular and you’re almost done with the thriller you’re writing, right?” Skarlet leaned back against her chair and closed her eyes in attempt to wish away her desire to murder her editor on the spot. Opening her eyes once more, she locked them intently onto her editor before asking what she should have asked earlier. “You signed it, didn’t you?” Mike stopped short before grinning widely. “You got me.” His eyes beamed with pride. “It’ll be great for you. Real big company, too.” He clasped his hands and leaned forward. “So how about it?”
Wolf:
After the meeting with her editor was over, Ebony decided to head straight towards her father’s residence. She needed a break and, perhaps, lounging about the mansion would prove to be the relaxation she was looking for. However, no sooner had she walked through the door when Curtis, her father’s right hand man, called down to her from the staircase balcony. “Wolf.” His gruff voice echoed from atop the second floor. “The big man wants to see you.” Ebony paused, cursing under her breath, before turning her head upwards to meet the man’s eyes. She was irked but they both knew there was nothing she could do about it. “What for?” She would reply almost skeptically as she shrugged off her coat.
To this, the man simply shrugged in response and gestured half-heartedly behind him. “Dunno, kiddo. He said to be there in five.” Ebony frowned. If her father had called for her this quickly, then something had to be wrong. Either that or he had something important to discuss. Regardless, it had to be nothing good. Her father, after all, was not the type of man who spent time with his family for the joy of it. With a sigh, Ebony handed off her jacket to one of the residence staff and made her way up to her father’s office. She knocked once and, upon hearing his reply, she entered soundlessly and took her place in front of his desk. She stood at attention, receptive of his every word. He was her boss, after all.
Her father turned towards her and frowned at the sight of her. “Mirrikh,” he scowled. “You are late.” Ebony twitched but said nothing. However, the brief flash of irritation she displayed did not go unnoticed. Her father shook his head disappointedly. “If only…” he would trail off as he took a seat. He didn’t need to finish the sentence for her to know what was on his mind. “You called for me, Father?” She would interject coolly. She was not in the mood for his games right now. “Ah, yes.” He replied off-handedly almost as if it were a chore to keep the conversation going. He gestured for her to take a seat to which she refused. “There’s some trouble at Julian’s. Take care of it for me, will you?” Her father waved her away.
Ebony bowed in response, gritting her teeth as she did so. When she faced him once more, however, her lips had formed into a professional smile. “Yes, sir.” She turned to leave but was stopped short by her father. “Oh, and Mirrikh,” he called out to her. “Take someone with you. We wouldn’t want something unfortunate to happen.” With those as his parting words, Ebony walked out without a word. Once outside, she muttered in irritation as she made her way towards the medical ward. She hoped that, at least, Adonis was on shift. If he was, she would ask him if he would accompany her. After all, what she needed most right now was the company of a friend and not the vigilance of her father’s watchdogs.

Hastened breathed escaped woe drenched lips as panic set itself deep inside an unknown plebian of little import. Although perhaps stating his value equated to something negligible could come across as inaccurate. For he did serve a grandiose purpose, at least to the so-called Death Catheter, Adonis "The Enemy" as many had taken to referring him as. A strange man with hair so white it looked beset by an intense frost. Eyes so uncompromisingly blue that one might feel suffocation, as though drowning in those oceanic pearls that dwelt within his skull. His voice softer than any of his features, despite the great beauty that showcased itself upon his visage. A monster in finery to be sure.
"Shhh... we've got some real tough bozos working next-door, you need to control your vocal range. Scream at about sixty percent of the decibel you currently are." The lurching medical practitioner expounded as his hand cusped the base of his own chin. Stroking it slowly in pure contemplation, all the while humming in a low octave. His victim seemed to maintain their pleasurable screeching for only a few more minutes before succumbing to the shock of losing their right arm. The good doctor couldn't help but to breath a sigh of eternal relief as peace returned to his ears. With a larger than life grin now stretching across his handsome features, he continued the procedure without any hesitation.
This was his job now. An alliance made between himself and one of the local Mafia Dons provided the unfortunate orphan the means to further his career. Employment that led him down the unexplored depths of the so-called underworld. While he had always practiced a bit of the organ trade on his personal time, of his own volition, he never had a steady supply of fresh product to gather, packaged and sell. It was a good thing then that this criminal family had many rivals within the underbelly of this city. It proved to be excellent practice for events that he'd no doubt take part of in the future. Though, there was no way for him to figure out what these unpredictive outcomes may hold.
He took his time squeezing some of his victim's juice out of the newly detached limb, getting the mixture tightly sealed into a large vial, taking out a marker and labeling it as human ammunition just before slipping it into what appeared to be a bandolier. It wasn't much long after when the large iron door that kept this medical ward separated from the rest of the facility found itself being opened. Adonis left his victim alone on the metal slab that he deemed worthy enough to be considered his operating table. A smile gracing his face as two thugs came into the room and removed the individual from his sight. Down the corridor he spotted a woman who he had made friendly with, the always intriguing Ebony M. d'Etth.
He'd move over towards the sink, washing away the memories that had accumulated on his hands during this whole sordid ordeal and by the moment she'd pass through those doors, if she even bothered too at all, he'd be seen packing up the bevy of his equipment. If it could even be called such a thing. He'd speak to her in an nonchalant manner, captivated by her sudden arrival inside his lair. "Ah, what brings you here, Ebony?" He didn't bother to address her by her last name, especially since his employment was to her father directly, but also out of how close he felt towards the woman. "Don't tell me you need a check-up or that you got hurt somehow." An amusing thought to be sure.

Making her way through the long corridors gave Ebony ample time to quickly gloss over the conversation she had just had with her father. Sure, he hadn’t spoken much but it was the things he didn’t say that still bothered her. After all, it wasn’t the type of request she usually received from him. Dealing with thugs, overall, was the job of the lower divisions and hers… well, the woman’s lips curved into grin, hers was an entirely different matter. Thus, she couldn’t help but wonder if there was another motif behind it all. Her irritation would soon subside as her mind grew pensive. Perhaps, she pondered, it wouldn’t be all that unusual if it were a way to simply test out her current standing? Ebony wasn’t one to blatantly display her full power so it would make sense that her father would want to see more from her. It wasn’t out of the question but it did leave a lingering feeling of unease.
Her mind would drift towards his unfinished jab. Ebony knew he had often used that very same line in order to get a rise out of her but, as they both knew, she hadn’t reacted to it in years. For a long time, she had blamed herself for her brother’s passing but that no longer was the case. She had long since accepted it for what it was. It had been a battle of survival and she had returned the victor. Thus, it made no sense that her father would continue provoking her. On the other hand, she wondered if it would simply wind down to her father feeling melancholy. He had, after all, long wished for her brother to become his heir but, as was the way of the mafia, he had lost and Ebony had risen to the top. Regardless, her father was not a loving man so to see him worry about his children was out of the question. He was never one to pay much mind to his family so it always made her uneasy when he did.
Her journey now coming to a close, she pushed away her troubling thoughts before stepping into Adonis’ domain. For now, she would focus on the job at hand and, hopefully, convince Adonis to accompany her. However, no sooner had she stepped foot inside, that he would acknowledge her presence even before she had uttered a single word of greeting. "Ah, what brings you here, Ebony?" He would ask nonchalantly. His practiced hands wrapping up the last of his equipment. "Don't tell me you need a check-up or that you got hurt somehow." To this, Ebony cracked a smile. “You know me better than that,” She would reply as her amber eyes twinkled in jest. “I just figured you needed a break is all.” She would take a seat at one of the chairs that decorated the place almost as if it were second nature to do so.
Her amber eyes drifted across the medical ward before settling back to him. It hadn’t been too long since Adonis had been contracted by her father but, over the course of time, she had grown comfortable around him. It helped that he was not one of her father’s lackeys but, on the other hand, it also meant that accompanying her might also mean overtime. No matter. “The big man wants me at Julian’s,” She would finally disclose. It wouldn’t surprise her if he knew. After all, it was no secret and her father’s men weren’t all too quiet around the base. Thus, she didn’t feel the need to disclose the reason why. “Want to come with?” She would give him time to respond but not before interjecting, “We could get something on the way there in case you’re starving, too.” If he would refuse, she would remain for a few moments more before taking her leave. If he chose to accept, she would give him time to get ready. The choice would be up to him.

Chuckling low underneath his breath, Adonis took some time to throw his pack over his shoulder and once he was certain that he hadn't forgotten any of his so-called tools of the trade, he made his way towards the gangster princess. He wasn't exactly what you'd call starving, but the man could put away the calories. So he answered her in a manner most simplistic, rubbing the small portion of the back of his neck all the while. "Why not, I did the tasks asked of me already, guess I deserve a treat. You're buying right?" He quizzed the female with an earnest smile before he stretched out his arms high above his head. Making sure to limber himself up... especially since they had something going on at Julian's.
Adonis wasn't born nor raised here in Baterilla. He had no idea who this person she spoke of was nor did he have the time to figure out who it was. Often times the mad doctor kept to himself, away from the uncivilized, uncultured and unscrupulous miscreants that typically worked in the criminal underbelly. His opinion of criminals wasn't completely negative, but he wasn't the type to glamorize or glorify the lifestyle. His business was merely a means to an end. One in which his skillset was far and above most who attempted to enter the field. A surgeon with impeccable skill and an unbelievably keen eye for detail. Despite his own moral ambiguity, one fact remained, Blizztarians were exceptional in their loyalty.
He didn't often deal with things in an acrimonious manner, but he made exceptions when dealing with most beatniks, regardless of their supposed status. Peering towards the pale haired vixen whom he attached his livelihood to, there was a glint of disappointment in his eyes as he spoke up about this supposed trouble. "Did you get any more information or are we basically going to end up walking in there blind? Last thing I need is scuffed shoes." He inhaled sharply with a smug grin gracing his model-like facial features. He'd slip his right hand into his pocket and wait for the woman to start heading towards the new location. He'd follow her immediately after she began her trek to that location. Though his curiosity never wavered.
Adonis was a cautious man and quite frankly it was that sense of awareness that kept him along so long. Especially in his line of work. One false move in the criminal underworld and you were finished. Didn't matter how powerful or influential you became. It was for this reason that the mad doctor found himself a bit skeptical about the information given to the pair. But he'd not allow anything bad to happen to the mafia monarch under his watch. Not due to her position, but due to his appreciation for her friendship thus far. There weren't many people that he would allow himself to lower his guard around. So it was fascinating that he managed such an feeling around this woman who was beyond him in terms of strength. Not that it mattered.
Despite the loose lips of those who worked underneath Ebony's father, Adonis was hardly the type of individual who paid attention to gossip. Loose lips sank ships and if anyone where to expect that he knew things he shouldn't, he could end up with cement shoes at the bottom of the East Blue. It was far more practical to merely gain all of his information from first-hand sources. Despite this, he didn't want to have the conversation dwell on this potential death sentence. So he spoke up with all of the gusto he could muster."I guess it doesn't matter in the long run, since I've got your back regardless of what dangers lie ahead?" He spoke in an overly dramatic tone, showcasing that while he was mocking her, he wasn't exactly being sarcastic.
He just knew that there wasn't a single person on this island who could take her on in a one-on-one fight.

Having given him her invitation, Ebony would sit back and quietly wait for his reply. Much to her unspoken delight, Adonis would agree. "Why not,” He would say as he made his way towards her all the while rubbing the back of his neck. “I did the tasks asked of me already, guess I deserve a treat.” He would shoot her an earnest smile before adding, “You're buying right?" Ebony would grin in reply. “Of course.” She had invited him so it only made sense to her. “Just make sure to grab what you need. I’ll take care of the rest.” Sure, Ebony had seen him pack his things but she simply meant to extend those words to him out of courtesy. Of course, if Adonis needed to pick something up along the way, she wouldn’t deny him that.
As she mentally reminded herself of a few things, Ebony would miss his look of disappointment. On the other hand, she would be quick to pick up on his smug tone. "Did you get any more information or are we basically going to end up walking in there blind? Last thing I need is scuffed shoes." She’d take a minute to reply. Although she hadn’t heard it from her Father directly, she had managed to get some tidbits from the men talking in the hallway. They, of course, weren’t reliable sources of information, but it was still something. However, perhaps taking her silence into consideration, he would insert: "I guess it doesn't matter in the long run, since I've got your back regardless of what dangers lie ahead?" She’d fight back the urge to scoff at his teasing tone.
Instead, Ebony rolled her eyes at his overly dramatic tone. She didn’t mind it one bit but, then again, she might just be giving him too much leeway. She’d shrug internally. “The big man didn’t give me much but it shouldn’t take more than a minute.” If anything, she was confident. She hadn’t bumped into anyone in Baterilla that could best her. At least, no one yet. “Far as I heard, some new group is starting to emerge. Might be them.” Regardless of who they were, she’d deal with them. “If anything,” she’d shrug nonchalantly. “They might not even be there anymore. Not like we don’t have people patrolling near there, anyway.” Then again, she figured, she was probably sent to gauge the newcomers' strength. She wouldn’t put it past her father in that regard. Ebony just wished she knew what he was thinking.
Having left the mansion shortly thereafter, Ebony now found herself strolling alongside Adonis through Baterilla’s still busy traffic. It amused her that despite how late in the day it was, the town seemed to always be springing with life. Then again, Baterilla had always been a prime vacation spot. Ebony would continue her leisurely stroll all the while keeping her feet moving on autopilot towards the direction of her objective. She would take a quick glance at Adonis before returning her gaze towards the road ahead. From what she knew, it would be his first time there. “We’ll just wrap up the issue at Julian’s before grabbing a bite,” Ebony would say as she adjusted the mask that now adorned her face. “He might want to treat us afterwards, anyway.” At the very least, she could trust the food there.
Julian, after all, had been a friend of the mafioso family for many years. He had first met them through a mutual acquaintance and had become fast friends with her grandfather. When Julian had decided to venture into the culinary world, her grandfather had been its first investor. They had both built the restaurant from scratch and, in the lack of a better name, had opted to name it after Julian himself. Thus, due to the longstanding friendship, it was not at all unusual for the establishment to directly request aid from the mafioso family. “It’s a bit on the high end so, if you prefer somewhere else, just let me know.” She didn’t mind either way. So long as he felt comfortable, she’d be willing to go anywhere.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having left the mansion shortly thereafter, Ebony now found herself strolling alongside Adonis through Baterilla’s still busy traffic. It amused her that despite how late in the day it was, the town seemed to always be springing with life. Then again, Baterilla had always been a prime vacation spot. Ebony would continue her leisurely stroll all the while keeping her feet moving on autopilot towards the direction of her objective. She would take a quick glance at Adonis before returning her gaze towards the road ahead. From what she knew, it would be his first time there. “We’ll just wrap up the issue at Julian’s before grabbing a bite,” Ebony would say as she adjusted the mask that now adorned her face. “He might want to treat us afterwards, anyway.” At the very least, she could trust the food there.
Julian, after all, had been a friend of the mafioso family for many years. He had first met them through a mutual acquaintance and had become fast friends with her grandfather. When Julian had decided to venture into the culinary world, her grandfather had been its first investor. They had both built the restaurant from scratch and, in the lack of a better name, had opted to name it after Julian himself. Thus, due to the longstanding friendship, it was not at all unusual for the establishment to directly request aid from the mafioso family. “It’s a bit on the high end so, if you prefer somewhere else, just let me know.” She didn’t mind either way. So long as he felt comfortable, she’d be willing to go anywhere.
He didn't directly respond to her words, knowing that he'd have a chance to inquire further in the near future. He kept to himself for now, making sure he was ready to head out and the moment that she had given the go ahead, he had already made his way from the room. The thought of this new group and who they were still stuck into the back of his mind.
He didn't know much about the gangster policies, but he wasn't going to go snooping into affairs that were outside of his wheelhouse. He went this far without getting a bounty and he was going to be damn sure to keep it that way. So as the pair made their way to Julian's, he simply fiddled with his rifle. Checking the water pressure gauges and adjusting the various screws that were implanted within.
Adonis was the kind of man that immediately took to being observant to his surroundings. He knew that his height completely dwarfed that of the lovely lady to his side, yet that did nothing to deter the looks that she herself garnered. While in his heart he wanted to attribute such attention to her clearly superior genetics, the woman was a looker by every stretch of the imagination, the truth of the matter was much more survival based.
It was no secret that the biggest fish in this pond was Ebony. She had proven this time and time again. The fact she didn't seem deterred by the implications surrounding her family's work offered a troubling perspective for most, Adonis wagered. A cool yet chilling realization to be sure. Though nothing could ever deter Adonis from his own loyalty to his friend.
His ears perked up as she began to speak once more, making sure that he paid her the attention that she wholly deserved. "I am not ungrateful, Eb. I don't much think it matters where we eat so long as I get to eat with you. You're not like most of the other mafiosos. You actually can form complete, legible sentences."
He was an avid writer himself, as he had penned a number of medical journals across the sea and it was indeed one of his personal goals to explore the various anatomies of every race... so that he could properly put a price on their organs. Those creatures that happened to need surgery were likely not receiving the proper medical care and not everyone had a devil fruit that could just miraculously fix their issues. It would come in handy whenever he truly kicked off his underworld schemes.
He didn't let his thoughts drift too far into the future, however. Especially not when he was with Ebony. It was far better to live in the moment when she was around. She was fun as hell to be around, despite how edgy she happened to be from time to time.
Though he did like that she fought with her crossbow. She was clearly the marksman of their little duo, despite the fact that he himself had the ability to utilize rifles. He wondered if she'd teach him how to use her weapon someday. That was a conversation for another time though.
"Hey, I've been meaning to ask you. What exactly do you hope to achieve staying here in Baterilla? Don't you ever feel as though your potential is far greater than merely taking over your family business?" He asked this in a very casual manner due to the fact that he didn't exactly care about asking intrusive questions. He was a doctor after-all.
"Or is this a conversation we should have at dinner instead?" He joked with her, knowing that thinking about other things in the moment could throw the pair off their game. Especially if you're talking about things that were both interpersonal and hardly ever discussed.
Either way, it wouldn't matter now. Adonis would rack the slide on his customized rifle, and the gurgle of liquid could be heard as it flooded into the chamber from the bottle that held his specialized ammunition. He'd spit to the side, looking down towards his female companion whom he dwarfed. He had to make sure to hide his face, since he didn't like the publicity that came with being on the wrong side of the law. Taking out his bandana from his back pocket, he'd tie the affect around his face, preparing for what lied ahead.
Ebony would finish her remarks prompting Adonis to swiftly reply back. It was one of the things she had come to appreciate from him. He listened and, even if it was only to humor her, he would be quick to reply. It was, perhaps, one of the reasons why she had come to truly respect him so much. "I am not ungrateful, Eb. I don't much think it matters where we eat so long as I get to eat with you.” Ebony would nod in silent response. It seemed as if they were both in agreement in that regard. She enjoyed his company and it pleased her to know that he enjoyed hers in turn. She, of course, would never outright admit it. “You're not like most of the other mafiosos,” He would continue prompting her to wonder what brought this up. “You actually can form complete, legible sentences." She would blink in surprise.
Although he most likely wouldn’t see it, Ebony would grin widely underneath her mask at his most random remark. It was, nevertheless, something she could wholeheartedly agree upon. At least, only when it came to his comment regarding the other mafiosos. She only needed to look at her father in order to know how true it was. “mmHm...” She mused. “I suppose you’re right.” Then again, perhaps she, too, would eventually fall into that group soon enough. “Although, I do believe I’m not that far behind.” Unless, of course, he counted written words. “Let’s just hope that doesn’t change in the future.” She would, after all, be taking over the family. Thus, becoming a metaphorically mute or, rather, a monosyllabic mafioso wouldn’t sound so farfetch'd. Either that, or her father would rub off on her eventually. She grimaced at that thought.
Regardless, she’d turn the conversation around. “I can, at the very least, promise the food is good. So long as the building is still standing.” Although she had meant it as a joke, she hoped that wouldn’t be the case. Her father would metaphorically kill her if it wasn’t, of course. It was practically a sacred ground for them. Adonis’ voice would pull her from her thoughts. "Hey, I've been meaning to ask you,” He would start. “What exactly do you hope to achieve staying here in Baterilla?” Ebony would glance up at his towering figure in momentary confusion. Hadn’t he known she planned to take over her father’s place? She frowned as she mulled over his words. “Don't you ever feel as though your potential is far greater than merely taking over your family business?" It took her quite a bit to not falter.
He would offer to move the conversation for a later time but she would choose to ignore it. “I…” She would start before trailing off into a frown. “Well…” Her eyes would furrow in displeasure until she would eventually let out sigh in mild frustration. “Truth be told, I’m not too sure myself.” She would turn to face the streets ahead in hopes that, by some miracle, she would find her answers. “Besides the family, I’ve never thought about doing anything else.” It was true. After all, her fate had been sealed the moment her brother had died. She had grown to accept it and, at times, she could even say that she enjoyed her work. The only issue being was that she had managed to convince herself that she had much time left to think about her path in life. “That doesn’t mean I don’t have my own dreams, though.” Of that, she was sure.
Skarlet, at the very least, had chosen for herself to pursue a career as a writer. Sure, they were works of fiction but it still provided her with a sense of independence and relief from her father. If anything, it was something that was truly hers. “If there is anything I’m sure about, though, it’s that I want more than what my family has to offer.” She wouldn’t elaborate. If she did, she would have to consider her own words a betrayal to which she wished to avoid. It wasn’t that she did not trust him but she wanted to take no chances. She would cut the conversation short. “How about you?” He was, in all reality, free from the chains the mafia held. He was contracted while she was born into it. Thus, he was essentially free to do whatever he wanted. “Do you have any plans for the future aside from all of this?” If he had asked her, she had every right to ask him in turn.
Adonis held a lot of thoughts in his head, never really the kind of guy to speak more than he had too in any given situation. Often because the fool that overplays their hand often gets taken by the pawn. But when it came to being around Ebony, that was an entirely different situation.
She made him rather talkative.
It was disheartening to hear that Ebony hadn't thought about the things that she wanted to do outside of the path that was already laid out for her. He didn't judge her, of course. They had two different life experiences. She was lucky enough to have that guiding hand and Adonis had been unfortunate enough to have to raise himself. This was a very stark contrast, but it wouldn't lead to problems because Adonis wasn't the type to preach to others on how they should go about their own business.
He did wonder what her family had to offer her. They were powerful, sure, but he never pried into the business of the Mafia. So he didn't know exactly where their influence started and stopped. In a way, however, it wasn't really his place to know.
There was at least one thing that he could offer Ebony that her family couldn't, however. Genuine comradery. He had seen too many times how blood wasn't enough to sustain comrades. There had to be something far more potent at the forefront. She had earned his favor and every time they spent more and more time together, she earned it more.
Though that wasn't to say he wasn't caught off guard by her sudden line of questioning.
What did Adonis want out of life beyond working for his current employers? Well that was a easy question to answer, "I want to avenge the death of my family caused by the hands of the World Government. I am never going to be strong enough to destroy them outright, but I can utilize their islands to expand the business I already do. It will be a small revenge, but it will be the first step in poisoning their already corrupt systems further." He wanted a personal revenge, especially since his goals where far more convoluted than most who sailed the seas.
He had noted that she didn't exactly explain what those dreams of hers actually happened to be. But that wasn't exactly his problem either. He was sure she would inform him in time. But this was not the time for such an action and therefore he didn't press her on it. He decided it was likely best to fill her in on more information about his past.
There wasn't exactly any common knowledge about his homeland this far out into the seas. "I wasn't always a doctor you know. I only picked up these skills after I joined the Revolutionary Army. I thought their cause would help in getting my revenge. But their methods are lacking. I don't want the World Government to be toppled, I want it to suffer."
He'd pause momentarily before speaking again. "I used to be a Prince. I was the next in line to rule my homeland of Blizztaria, a large yet unknown winter island off in the North Blue. Those bastards wanted something from my father and they took it from him." He never once dropped the smile on his face despite telling her a story that shaped him into the madman that he happened to be now.
He'd stretch his hands out over his head briefly before resting them against the back of his cranium. Moving with an unusually relaxed swagger. "I need to figure out what happened eventually, but that isn't a priority to me. Right now I am completely fine with building up some cashflow here. But I do not plan to stay here forever. I have to see more places to establish future connections. Though I have made at least one genuinely valuable connection here already." He smirked as he looked over towards her. Turning his attention towards their destination once more.
He hoped he didn't over share but if he had, it wasn't that big of a deal all things considered.
"Feel free to share with me anything on your mind, Eb. I don't mind discussing things with you, no matter how bleak the subject matter. It's why I have come to personally help tend whatever wounds you might happen to get." He was honest at least. He was her own personal physician at this point.
Though his medical skills where lacking over-all. Something that he was going to have to fix as soon as possible. It would take some time, however.
When Ebony had first asked about his life goals, she had never expected Adonis to tell her his entire life story. In fact, she had even begun to anticipate the lack of response along with the usual runaround she often received whenever she attempted to get a serious answer out of him. However, it seemed that, if only for today, that would not be the case. "I want to avenge the death of my family caused by the hands of the World Government.” He began. Ebony said nothing as she allowed him to go on. “I am never going to be strong enough to destroy them outright, but I can utilize their islands to expand the business I already do.” Harsh but she could only agree. It was true that he was exceptional in a variety of ways but he was also, without a doubt, nothing more than a small fry when it came to the World Government itself.
Adonis continued. “It will be a small revenge, but it will be the first step in poisoning their already corrupt systems further." Ebony maintained her silence as she mulled over his remark. There wasn’t anything special about his line of thought but she had to agree that it was the easiest path to take. It was also the only one that yielded the fastest results and, thus, it was the direction many others chose as their path forward. Not that she was one to complain as the mafia was no different. They were, after all, a corrupt entity that took advantage of the weak links the government left behind. They operated within the confinements of the system and, as was the way of things, they did not hesitate to exploit it to their advantage. She only needed to look at the way Baterilla operated to see the results first hand.
His story soon took a slightly different route prompting Ebony to give him a questioning look. “I wasn't always a doctor you know.” She frowned ever so slightly at this new tidbit of information. It was the first time she was hearing it. However, it was not at all surprising considering the fact that she had never once asked him these questions before. “I only picked up these skills after I joined the Revolutionary Army. I thought their cause would help in getting my revenge.” She nodded. It was something that didn’t surprise her as they were infamous for their hatred against that World Government. It made sense and, if he had learned from them, she could only assume that he had fared with them for quite a bit of time. “But their methods are lacking. I don't want the World Government to be toppled, I want it to suffer."
Fair point, Ebony thought as she nodded once more. He'd pause momentarily before speaking again. His behavior, however, did not go unnoticed. "I used to be a Prince.” At this point, Ebony furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. It went without saying that his remark had thrown her off guard to the point where she was now doubting his entire story. He, on the other hand, continued his tale. “I was the next in line to rule my homeland of Blizztaria, a large yet unknown winter island off in the North Blue.” Perhaps, Ebony mused to herself as she began to take his words with a grain of salt, so many hours working had made him somewhat delusional. “Those bastards wanted something from my father and they took it from him." She’d give him a somewhat sympathetic look.
Besides the occasional nod, Ebony would continue to say nothing. It was clear that he believed his own story and so all she could do was listen. “I need to figure out what happened eventually, but that isn't a priority to me.” She could only assume it to be so. After all, he was still in Baterilla and, at the end of the day, it worked to her benefit. “Right now I am completely fine with building up some cashflow here. But I do not plan to stay here forever. I have to see more places to establish future connections.” Ebony’s face immediately went stoic as she trained her eyes forward. This was something she wasn’t too keen on hearing but there was essentially nothing she could do. It made sense considering his goal but... “Though I have made at least one genuinely valuable connection here already."
At the offhand remark, Ebony rolled her eyes as a teasing grin spread across her face. She’d give him a brief glance before reverting her eyes back towards the road. "Feel free to share with me anything on your mind, Eb,” Adonis would conclude. “I don't mind discussing things with you, no matter how bleak the subject matter.” Although much appreciated, she did not know what to say or how to respond. Discussing such things had never been something she went out of her way of doing so it felt somewhat foreign to her. “It's why I have come to personally help tend whatever wounds you might happen to get." She’d stay silent for a few moments more as she quarreled with herself. If he had shared this much, the least she could do was share hers. Although, now, it would be more of a gamble on her part.
After some time, Ebony finally let out a tired sigh. If he was going to be this descriptive with his own life, then she felt that she really needed to provide him with some substance. It seemed only fair so long as the receiver was Adonis himself. “Curtis called last night to offer me a deal,” she started off. Perhaps it seemed out of the blue but she needed to start somewhere. However, now that she said it, Ebony wasn’t sure on how to proceed. “If all goes well, I’ll be leaving this place soon, too.” She wouldn’t elaborate much more as this wasn’t the place to do so. “I had initially planned to ignore it but…” She’d turn her gaze up to Adonis. “If you need me, I’m here, too, you know?” It went without saying but she would provide him with the support he needed so long as he relied on her, too.
Ebony would lift her eyes upwards to the sky as she thought hard about where to go from there. Perhaps a bit more information about the group’s underboss was in order. “He’s been more of a father to me than the boss, ya know?” She’d hesitate for a bit before continuing. “When the big man cast me aside, Curtis was the one who trained me and taught me what I needed to know.” It was the reason she had survived. It had given her the edge she needed and it had paid off. Now that she was older, however, Curtis was seeking his payment. The only issue being that what he demanded would shake the very foundation in which she stood upon. Then, again, it also would affect the contract that Adonis held with her father. She’d hesitate once more before asking. “Have you considered, perhaps, changing the terms of your contract?”
Adonis was far too preoccupied with all of the other shit going on in his life to ever have these kinds of leisurely conversations. Especially given the fact that this was the longest period of time he had ever stayed on one singular island. He was well aware that he was here due to his friendship that he formed with Ebony. But it was strange to have a friend in the first place.
Especially one who commanded his attention when they spoke. It reminded him of having a commanding officer back when he was a member of the Revolutionary Army.
Adonis didn't interrupt his friend when she spoke, but he did smile wide towards her when she completed telling him about some mysterious deal from Curtis. He hadn't exactly spent a great deal of time with the man, especially since he had a fairly specific role within the organization as a whole. What he knew about the man was that he was the second-in-command for all intents and purposes.
The majority of individuals that happened to work for the family often didn't get on his radar. Especially given the fact that they weren't exactly the most... hospital people from his experience. Not that it bothered him if they were or not.
What gave him pause when speaking about the people within the faction was all the politics and drama that often came with working in these kinds of groups.
Like a bunch of teenage girls in a educational setting.
Not that he had room to talk. He was quite the edgy individual and he knew that flat out. Which was why he often wore an outfit that reflected that, despite the fact that his innumerable juices often gave a splash of color to his otherwise dark and drab wardrobe.
None of these self-reflections mattered to Adonis though. He was aware of who he was and how he fit into this mafia machine. What he was more interested in was how Ebony fit.
He was more intrigued with the intricacies associated with Ebony's finer motor functions. He was always aware of the micro movements displayed by the body when someone had an emotional response to outside stimuli. It was a good way to detect if people were lying, or to figure out the intention of the people he was involved with. He wasn't a mind reader, but it was always handy to pay attention to such things, especially during business deals. It could save your life if you noticed someone being nervous, impatient or twitchy. Double-crosses occurred more often than breathing in his line of work.
He wanted to get her to clarify what she was speaking about, but given that she didn't laugh when he told her about his past, he could tell that she was being serious with whatever vague nonsense she was trying to bring up to him now. Luckily, he hung on every syllable that left her lips.
Though he had to admit that he was currently distracted by how she stated that she was there for him. It wasn't something that he found himself used to dealing with. He was a drifter due to his business, so he often had to rely on himself. Even those he employed had to be kept at arms length in the grand scheme of things. That way, he'd not succumb to the dangers often associated with working in the Underworld. Especially since there wasn't any honor among thieves in his experience.
He noted that she hesitated before asking him her question, which caused the man to close the distance between the pair and place his hand on top of her head. Doing so because he was too tall to throw his arm around her neck without bending over first. He just wanted her to feel that he wasn't joking around about being her companion.
"A deal? Is it similar to what you are about to ask me?" He was curious just what mess she had gotten herself into. Though he figured that she would explain after making sure she could absolutely trust him. So he didn't allow himself to pause too long before asking her a follow-up question.
"What did you have in mind?" He asked her in regards to his contract. He wasn't going to just blindly agree to any contract changes. Especially given the fact that he had fallen for some shit in the past that led him here to begin with.
Not that he didn't trust Ebony.
But since they were just friends, he had to make sure that he didn't allow his already lowered guard to cause him more problems than he needed. Something that he was sure would happen often if he stuck around the woman in the future.
Not that he minded.
"I'm always open to negotiation with my nakama." He was a business man first and foremost. He wasn't the kind of guy that often got played when it came to dealing organs. Especially since he wanted to be the best one that ever lived. Or to put it more simply, he wanted to be the Kingpin of the Organ Trade.
Intimate human contact was simply something Ebony was not used to which caused her to stiffen immediately under Adonis’ hand. She had clearly not expected him to draw nearer, much less have taken the liberty to display such an act. However, although it was unexpected, Ebony did not find it the least bit unpleasant. Thus, she allowed him to keep his hand resting on her head for just a tad bit longer.
"A deal?” He would ask her curiously. It seemed as if her inquiry had piqued his interest. She would take it as a sign in her favor. “Is it similar to what you are about to ask me?" Ebony moved her face upwards in an effort to make eye contact with him. It was clear that he had seemed to have taken her rather seriously. It made things a lot easier now that he was receptive to what she was about to propose.
For now, however, Ebony would take a few moments of silence as she took the opportunity to study him briefly. Although she figured it was better to simply get it over with, there were still some precautions she needed to take. Baterilla, after all, had eyes and ears everywhere. Speaking of such delicate matters out in the open was never a good idea but times were rapidly changing. Not everything was guaranteed to go according to plan so she needed to see where Adonis stood before it all hit the fan.
Ideally, Ebony wished for him to stick by her side. She was not only interested in shielding him from becoming the scapegoat but his talents could be used to her advantage. He also had an ambition that would fit her needs perfectly. Thus, she swore that she would become someone worthy of his talents. If it meant aiding Curtis, then so be it. After all, it would only be a matter of time before she regained it all back.
Adonis continued. “What did you have in mind?" It truly seemed as if he was open to the idea which prompted Ebony to consider her next words. Despite their unusual friendship, discerning allegiances were tricky in their line of work. Not to mention, they were in the middle of the streets which wasn’t the best place to hash out such important matters. "I'm always open to negotiation with my nakama." However, she could trust herself just enough to give him the run down version.
“The family dynamic will be changing soon,” Ebony would begin as all traces of emotion seemed to fizzle away. Her features would take on quite a serious look as her gaze turned sharp. It was an easy feat to do considering she no longer felt any attachment to it. “If you’re still looking to stay alive by the time that happens, I’m hoping that you’ll consider working under me instead.”
The power structure was always a fickle thing. To the extreme both Ebony and Curtis would take it, well, it would cause a lot of problems to those not intimately involved with the process. “Of course, I strongly advise joining me sooner rather than later. Something permanent, so to speak.” She’d turn to face the familiar block, watching as their destination grew increasingly close. “The details, we can hash over a different time. However, I’ll be expecting an answer soon.”
Having stated what she needed to say, Ebony gestured towards the rather large, flashy building. It was not something most people associated with fine dining but, just like the building, its owner was quite the eccentric one. Its surroundings, however, would seem peaceful. That was until a body came flying out the restaurant’s window. Ebony clicked her tongue in disapproval. It was another typical day in Baterilla.
Adonis listened carefully to the wording posed to him by his lovely friend Ebony. She seemed to be making a threat towards him on the surface, but he knew very well that it came from a place of admiration. Or at least that was how he justified her words in his mind. It was a veiled threat to some degree... but knowing this ogre of a woman, he figured that she'd just dispose of him now if he denied her.
Not that he gave a shit.
"So you want me to officially work for you? Like...as a mobster? Enter your family and all that? Why.. I am honored by such a glorious and gracious offer. One with absolutely no threat upon my humble and fragile livelihood." He mocked her for a moment, ruffling her hair underneath his palm.
He knew he was playing with fire, but that was just the kind of man that Adonis happened to be.
He'd peer down at the female, his smiling growing wider as he lowered himself down to her level. Placing his lips near her ear and speaking to her casually, with the cadence in his voice being that of one in the middle of a... seductive act.
"I would love nothing more than to work under you, Ebony." He'd release his hand from her head and then slip his hands on top of his own head. Peering at the man who just flew out of the window. Moving away form her a safe distance. "Or behind you, on top of you, your choice."
He quickly spoke before his words could settle into her mind. Before she was able to truly discern what he had meant with his scandalous comment. "From now until my dying days, I am your man. You've more than earned it."
That was one of the aspects to Adonis that proved to be strange. He was a man with strong convictions, ones that often didn't allow him to make decisions lightly. He normally wouldn't just pledge his allegiance to some random woman with a pretty face. But he had been apart of her faction long enough to understand that Ebony was different than her father. She didn't seem to be controlled by an insatiable lust for greed or power....right?
There wasn't a way for him to tell. All that he had observed so far is that she just followed her own path... or at least she was trying too. Even now she didn't seem to sure about what she was doing, but part of that excited him. He too had no set path and even his own objective had a questionable tint to it.
Would he ever truly get revenge for what happened to his family? There was no way for him to come to that conclusion. Yet, he still walked his path. It led him to Ebony, so here he was.
Perhaps things wouldn't work out and they'd both end up dead? It didn't really matter what the outcome was, however. He enjoyed being around her and he enjoyed working with her. She was competent in more ways than anyone he had ever met out in the blues and it was that competency that made trusting her so easy.
He took a moment to look over towards her despite the fact that a man had crashed out the window. Such antics were a low priority to the humble serial organ harvester.
"To be clear, however. I am loyal to you, I work for you. I don't know Curtis all that well. I won't do what he tells me unless you explicitly say so. Simple as that." He had to draw the line somewhere.
Taking orders from some old ass guy he barely ever talked too was one such line.
He paused momentarily, chuckling to himself as he turned his attention back over towards the individual whom was tossed out the window like a bucket of dirty water. "Was that a friend of yours?"
He bared his fangs, slipping his hands down into his pockets before walking closer to the establishment. If she had confirmed that she knew the person, he'd have left them alone. But he knew that this person wasn't. It was clear as day due to the type of suit that the man wore. Adonis was observant, he could see all the signs that this man was a scumbag.
Approaching with the same smile attributed to Narcissus, he'd press the heel of his right combat boot down against the side of the man's cranium. Holding him in place so that his new employer could interrogate them.
Adonis liked to watch.
Ebony had sugar coated the threat under the pretense of choice but it seemed as if Adonis was quick on the uptake. Something she was happy to take note of. "So you want me to officially work for you? Like…as a mobster? Enter your family and all that?” He wasn’t that far off considering she would have simply been content if he had just switched his contract over to her. But, if he was offering to join himself, well, how could she refuse? Unfortunately, it came with a bit of sass on his part. “Why.. I am honored by such a glorious and gracious offer. One with absolutely no threat upon my humble and fragile livelihood." Ebony graced his remark with a grin whilst playfully leaning away from him as he ruffled her hair.
However, Ebony soon realized that giving him too many liberties had come with its own pair of consequences. “I would love nothing more than to work under you, Ebony." If those had been the only words he had uttered, she would have let it go. Adonis, on the other hand, continued to push his luck. "Or behind you, on top of you, your choice." It wasn’t what he said that triggered her but, rather, the way he said it was what got a reaction out of her. It seemed as if she needed to re-educate him properly. As she prepared to swivel around to punch him in the face, she quickly realized that he had taken the initiative to move some distance away. A rather wise move, Ebony thought as she clicked her tongue in disapproval.
HIs next words would pacify her. At least, somewhat. "From now until my dying days, I am your man. You've more than earned it." Although it wasn’t how she had planned for him to join her, she could only be grateful that he had accepted her invitation. Hatching out the details would be their next priority. Adonis, as was his usual method, beat her to the punch. "To be clear, however. I am loyal to you, I work for you.” Ebony nodded. The invitation had been to join her, after all. Curtis was simply a means to an end. “I don't know Curtis all that well. I won't do what he tells me unless you explicitly say so. Simple as that." Now that Adonis had said what he needed to say, Ebony knew she had to make things clear.
Ebony sharped her gaze as was the habit she had picked up. Things were getting serious which meant she had to give him a rundown of what she expected. “Of course,” She’d narrow her eyes slightly. “I wouldn’t want you to, anyways.” Besides the repayment, Ebony would have nothing to do with her adoptive father once it was all done and over with. “The relationship that exists is simply that of a transaction. Once it is over, well...” She’d allow her words to trail off. “Let’s just say I won’t need him anymore.” Having said that, Ebony shrugged. It was the way things worked. She was sure he would come after her as a way to secure himself but, like she had learned from him, it all came down to which one was the first to strike.
Their attention then turned to the bundle of flesh that had oh-so gracefully flown out to greet them. Judging by Adonis’ chuckle, he was ready for action. "Was that a friend of yours?" Ebony did not grace his question with an answer. He knew as well as she who the body belonged to. However, she’d watch him interestedly as he made his way towards the man. As Adonis secured... it with this boot, she’d come up from where she stood and peer down at the man with a grin. Feeling somewhat peckish for a bit of fun, Ebony lifted her heel and rested it on the man’s chest. Ebony then leaned forward as she lay her forearm on her knee to provide added support.
The man groaned in pain causing Ebony’s grin to widen as she dug her heel a little deeper. The man would grab at her foot in an attempt to pull her off. She, however, did not budge. Unfortunately for the frantic… person, he was currently Ebony’s source of entertainment. Once the man had finished struggling, he’d meet her eyes with a defiant glare. This caused a shiver of excitement to course through her. “A Princip, I assume?” She’d say as her eyes twinkled in glee. “I hadn’t realized our agreement had ended so soon.” She grinned a Cheshire grin at Adonis. “You?” It was a rhetorical question. One she didn’t need to wait for Adonis to answer. The man struggled once more causing an extra amount of pressure to immediately be applied.
Seeing as how the man refused to answer her, Ebony lifted the sole of her shoe and squashed the man with her heel. The man cried out as Ebony resumed her original pose. “You see…” Ebony continued nonchalantly as she addressed the pinned man. “This leads us to a little problem.” She’d gesture towards the building. “That there,” She’d turn her gaze back to the man. “That’s part of our territory.” She’d nod to herself without expecting an answer. “We, Golden Wolves, don’t like you guys making a fuss around here. Capiche?” Another crashing sound would ring as another body went flying. Ebony, of course, chose to ignore it for the meantime.
