He generally wears brown polyester pants since expects to be out and about in rough wilderness some days and a bustling city the next. The wear and tear is noticeable where mud cakes his pants' cuffs and its seams are loose and slowly coming undone as they crawl up his leg.
He tends to wear heavy boots with thick, worn laces and worn hole ridden soles. He tends to wear grimy gloves riddled with tears and stains too troubling for most of his usual associates to question. As the one who ate the suna suna fruit, he is often cover in bits of sand that tend to build up slowly in the crevices of his clothing. His clothing always possesses a dirty, coarse feeling as a result. When it gets cold, he wears a worn vest which used to have 4 lion-shaped buttons to secure itself around his chest. Now its once bright yellow seams and bronze hue is dulled with a hint of fatigue that seemingly reflects himself.
Description:Stein is a lean fellow who could stand to gain a couple of pounds. His cheeks aren't gaunt, but you can see his pointed jawbones. He generally carries himself with his shoulders out, but his clothing at times reveals how loose they became as he set out on his own. He isn't as well built as he was before, with slight bits of squishiness forming where tone workingman muscles used to reside. His legs are a bit more toned with thick calves from his long treks in the wilderness as he island hops. His skin is pale even in the hot summer months, not even possessing slightest bit of tan anywhere except his face.
The Past
Main Traits:Diligent, inquisitive, reckless, jokester, Zealous
Likes:Freedom, French fries, Squid, Sunny days
Dislikes: Rainy days, Dishonesty, abdication of duty, cats
Unique laugh: Jehahaha-Haaaahaaa-ha
Hometown: Lyneel
Personality: Stein is a busy-body who would view rest as a waste of time if it could be cut out from his schedule. He'll tend to climb over one more hill before taking a breather. Or he'll swing his pickaxe one more time before taking a seat to catch his breath. Time isn't just money to stein, but rather it is a game of inches. The more you cede, the greater the risk you incur to those who have more. That being said, this is when he is alone or doesn't necessarily need to interact with others.
With people he tends to wish he was funnier and more outgoing, but usually falls flat in his conversations. He's very good at talking about business or even things he's interested about. However starting a conversation may as well be moving a mountain and maintaining it at times he feels, is akin to facing a god. Nevertheless, Stein likes interacting with others for fun and finds it necessary, but he stinks at it.
He isn't a man of vice, but rather, he is a man who is always searching for a new summit. He's not content with his current self at any time and finds the challenge of beating others, including himself a necessary evil. He'd say, " No man is perfect. Those who stop growing stop living". Thus he tends to not stop to smell the roses and sacrifices today for a better tomorrow.
Perhaps the two ways to tempt him are promises women or french fries. However he will never admit these two weaknesses. He finds the fact that his eyes fall toward boobs naturally a sin, although a very sexy one. And his desire to eat french fries an ingrained habit from childhood, but one he wont let go of because they remind him of his family.
In combat Stein tends to first look for an out. He will always scan the environment and take a few extra moments to look around for ways he can escape above all else. This tends to be something he does before even stepping into a building, but he will also do this before making his move since situations change on the fly. After securing his escape route mentally, Stein tends to bring the fight to his opponent depending on the context. If it's simply his own hide on the line, he will sneak around the opponent's flank and go for the head honcho with a cheap shot. However, in a situation such as a pirate, he'll make every precaution necessary to save as many people as possible, even if it means putting himself in harms way.
Whether he's in combat, chatting it up, or doing business, Stiens finds life to be a battle. A desperate struggle for inches. He is always looking for an advantage and to make progress in anything he's doing faster. Sometimes that can put a strain on his relationships, but he never could get over the loss of his family. He thinks his old tendency to relax with them is what lead to their untimely demise. Blaming himself for the work of others since it was his own lack of preparation that gave them the opening to act.
- History:
Age 6
An exhausted and sore Stein stumbled into his father's study and threw himself onto his couch. Its cushions were soft, but firm. He groaned and eye lids became heavy like cinder blocks. That is until his father came in moments later with a tray of french fries. The aroma travels across the room and instantly perked up a young Stein. " oh ho so you're awake my son. I was 'fraid I'd hav'ta eat em meself". Stein rushed over like the wind and reached out without a second thought. WHAM.
A ruler slapped his hand. Stein pouted at his stern father and looked away. "First tell me what is most important son". Stein rubbed his chin reflexively and grinned saying, " French fries". His father raised his arm and Stein reflexively flinched, scrunching his eyes and guarding his face with his arms, " family k, it was a joke dad"! Steins waited a moment and nothing happened. A burly hand ran through his hair and the plate drew closer to him. " I'm glad you think so son, but the most important thing in this life is freedom".
Stein blinked, giving his father a long drawn out stare. " Why pops, I love you guys more than freedom and stuff". His father shook his head from side to side and said, " No, you are able to work with me because you have freedom. Your mother was able to make food because she has the freedom to do so. We were able to build our house and business", he said before being interrupted.
"because you had freedom", exclaimed the little boy. His father nodded and hugged his boy, " Never forget that I was able to love you and your mother because I was free to meet her. Cherish your liberty boy".
Stein wouldn't know it until he was much older, but his father's lesson for better or worse, would shape the trajectory of his life from there on out.
Age 11
Stein was hammering away at nail doing some routine repairs. Occasionally ships needed new boards or new nails due to sea air rust. The wind rustling his hair and hot sun beating down upon him. As he wiped sweat from his brow a couple of noblewomen walking along the dock waved to him. His face became cherry red as he waved back. A wrench whirred through the air, striking his chest with a loud audible clack. "oof, that sounded like a bone broke", said one of the older men.
Stein shook his head, confused and dazed on the ship's deck. " oi you brute why you gotta throw wrenches at me"!? The girl simply winked at him while their coworkers helped him out. Next thing he knew, he was in the boss' office. He came to and found himself in deafening silence. " hmm ahhh ahh achh cha cha ahh, yikes that brute", he said while rubbing the side of his belly. As he made his way to the door, a strange fruit caught his attention. It was bright yellow with strange black zig zags coursing along its body like waves. Stein reached for the fruit, which was heavier than he imagined, and took a bite. The taste that met his tongue almost overwhelmed his senses. Tears welled up in his eyes as he took bite after bite, so as to not waste food. He was thinking, he'd tell his pa that it was disgusting later on.
Again he found himself working, but he felt this strange dry sensation. A strange itch he couldnt get rid of. Every couple of minutes he'd lose his focus and stratch himself like he was covered in fire ants. " bakatien, are you okay", asked his childhood friend. He grinned and said, " I dunno might be the sweat cuz im itchy as heck". She snickered pushed him over a ledge exclaiming, " it's cuz you dont shower baka" ! Stein felt himself falling, but wasn't worried. Instead he was thinking of how to get back at her when suddenly the strength from his body was gone. He was telling himself move, but keeping his mouth shut was all he could barely manage. He felt himself sinking like an anvil, heart racing like a horse as he urge himself to move. Pain wracked his chest, it felt like fire he thought, as a shadowy figure descended upon him.
When he came to, he was out on the street coughing up sea water. He breathed in deep, almost destructive breathes while his body convulsed from his thrashing about. It was only later on that he'd come to find out from his father that he ate something he shouldn't have. A devil fruit, from a land far far away. " Stien, you are no longer welcome at the docks. Tomorrow, we begin your training".
Age 12-17
Stein wasn't literally banned from the docks, but he was forced to work by day and learn to fight at night. During the holidays when everyone else was celebrating the celestial dragons, he was being dropped in the middle of the wood and told to come back alive. Other times he was dropped on a random island and told to come back alive on his own. His father prioritized the basics of being able to travel alone and through wargames meant to train his basic combat instincts. In some ways he knew of what was to come, but Stein was still naive. His young teenage mind thought his dad was simply a hard ass who was still mad about him eating the suna suna. But in reality it was an encroaching shadow that inched ever closer to his family.
The night of his final dinner
Stein was hunched over his meal, eyeing his father intently. He looked under his plate, under his table, and even under his seat cushion. " Son, your food is going to get cold if you don't eat chee hahaha". Stein shot him needles with his gaze and said, " This is some sort of trap I know it". His father shrugged and his mother started to tear up when he realized his foolishness. " s-s-sorry mom I'll eat, I'll eat". The boy began to shovel food into his craw, eating all his favorites at once. Some squid and peanutbutter here, a little turkey with gravy there. The naive young man didn't suspect a thing. His parents held eachother's hands as their boy enjoyed his meal.
But before he could even place down his spoon and ask for seconds, Steins father pulled the boy by his collar and yanked him down a dark hallway. " Achhh aww dad what the--", was all he could utter as a loud crash resounded through his home. The two of them found themselves in his study on the second floor. The gruff man stuck a piece of paper into his son's pocket and tossed him out the window. Stein would never forget the look of regret his father wore as they overlooked the dark view. Below was the harbor, with harsh crashing waves beating the pier. The sound of multiple people's footsteps were drawing ever closer. "Jump", he father said. Stein didn't understand what was going on or why he would. But when the door crashed open, he froze. His father wringed his neck and tossed his panicked son out of the window, but not before the guards opened fire. Stein would never forget the look of regret plastered on his father's visage while he fell from that window.
Officially he was dead. The authorities believed their shot both father and son. The son was believed to have thrown himself into the stormy harbor. No one knew where the suna was, so they didn't suspect him to have eaten it. In the chaos and confusion, he used the instincts his father taught him about evading an enemy in a city environment and used it to escape Lyneel on a ferry headed to the spider miles.
Stein had no family, no purpose or leads. The only thing he could think of was the paper his father gave him. Which simply put, had two words, " Void era". He didn't know what the words meant or what they had to do with his situation. But he vowed to find out what this mysterious era was and why his father passed it on in such a manner.
Little did he know, his family held ties to the celestial dragons. Those who controlled the ports, controlled the flow of life in a world beset by endless ocean. On this island they brought in all manner of vice, human trafficking, and weapons for the pleasure of its ruling class. However, taking even a single grain of sand from said class also meant death. Stein wouldn't come to find out about his family's dark dealings and how they afforded his father's precious freedom, but nevertheless, he moves forward ever more. In pursuit of the cryptic clue his father left behind.

I really liked the anecdotal format you chose to use for Stein's history. Well done!
