Volo puts a great emphasis on personal freedoms and as such, has a particular hatred for those who take that away from others. When faced with such injustice, he cannot just stand idly by or walk away, he is willing to intervene for even the strangest of strangers. Fighting for his own ideas of freedom on their behalf.
Volo has quite the sense of adventure, having been stirred by stories told of his father's famous pirate crew. Having ridden on the same ship as the legendary Black Fist himself. The crew spent quite a bit of time partying and telling stories of grand adventures during their visits to the South Blue. Leading him to grow attached to several of the members, namely the captain due to his vivid stories of the grand line.
- History:
Growing up on Karate Island in the South Blue, Volo spent the majority of his time being forced to train his body by his grandfather against the former will.
Ryu Rosso was callous and cold, an old man hardened by years of solitary training mastering a craft to the point of perfection, a pinnacle little others could even dream of. Something he had always wished to pass on and continue in his own lineage, his own contribution to the future of the world.
First, it was his son, a man blessed with great size and strength. The perfect one to inherit his will, Ryu was content. That is until the boy grew and rebelled at his every wish. Until one day Volo's father left the island, making his way through the world as a D list “rockstar” who spent more time fighting than playing before one day ending up as a crew member of one of the greatest pirates to ever live.
Because of this, Ryu never spoke to his son again, even during the many visits to the island. The spiteful old man never once left his Dojo. Though he did allow the children to visit, one of the few guaranteed times they were given time off from chores and training.
After his son, Ryu tabbed Volo as his replacement and began working towards his ultimate goal of passing down his knowledge. Most days were dull and offered little outside of the normal routine, Volo would work in the fields before the sun rose. Pulling carts by hand, tilling fields with his hands. "Training" his grandfather called it, having the boy's finger pierce the dirt over and over, digging with the sheer force of the strikes. As the day went on they moved to climbing and lifting, running and swimming. From dusk till dawn they trained and they trained, but never once did Ryu teach the boy his craft.
While Volo trained, his sister cleaned. Sickly and frail, she was never able to work as hard as Ryu wished. Though he never treated her poorly, mostly ignoring her as long as the Dojo was kept clean.
Though she was limited physically, there was no limit to her mind. A self-taught genius, she spent her childhood inventing and building. Often sneaking away to spend time with the local shipwrights and merchants. Exchanging Volo's helping hand for foreign parts and blueprints.
They shared a dream together, to one day travel the world side by side, pilot and mechanic, visiting all the islands they had heard about. With one island and story gripping them more than any other, the sky islands. Eyes innocent and wide they would imagine grand adventures in a ship that sailed through the clouds, pretending to be pirates in the sky. Sailing high above the ocean, free from the the chains of the ground and sea.
These dreams would become reality one day as the pair combined to ultimately build the flying ship "Emilia" together. With Volo providing the labor while his sister was the mastermind behind the project, designing it with his unique ability to read the flow of currents in mind.
Every once in a while, his father would return home alongside his crew. He was a great pirate and a member of a legendary group led by a man who some call the strongest in the world, the former Yonkou Gray.
Volo loved nothing more than listening to the captain's stories, for all of his strength and power, his greatest attribute was his kindness. Telling of cities of gold and islands filled with ancient beasts larger than life, cities with sunflowers as big houses, but nothing filled Volo with wonder more than the stories of islands in the sky with seas of cloud stretching across the horizon. These interactions led him to idolize pirates, hoping to one day set out to visit the islands he had heard so much about.
One visit was unlike those that came before, a small boat docked in the port and only Gray disembarked, the rowdy crew Volo had grown to love nowhere in sight. The memory of the captain's face, no longer smiling, was burned into the young boy's mind.
Gray carried something in his hands and headed straight for Ryu's Dojo. Shouting was soon heard and quickly the Black Fist left for his boat without another word to the man. Ryu was angry, a man full of regrets he lashed out at Gray whether it was warranted or not. Projecting his anger, he made idle threats of violence both parties knew he couldn’t back up. But he slung them nonetheless.
On his way back to the docks, he met with Volo in town, there the pirate bid his farewell and continued on his journey after leaving his father’s jacket and the Moku Moku no mi in his care. Urging the boy to set out only when he is ready and to come find him when he does, a promise made on both sides as Gray would tell the full story of his father if he did so.
It was this final visit that cemented the idea to turn their dream of an airship into reality. Spending the next three years training and building in preparation for their journey. With Volo setting out on his own four years after the visit.

- History:
Growing up on Karate Island in the South Blue, Volo spent majority of his time.learning shipwright techniques from his grandfather and avoiding his karate lessons to work on his own inventions. Volo's grandfather was furious and wouldnt have it, threatening the pirate and forcing him to leave Karate island. Respecting the old mans wishes, the pirate continued on his journey after his story was told, but not before imparting a gift to the young Volo. Leaving him with his fathers Moku Moku no mi and a dream of freedom [ If Volo's grandfather was salty, I don't think Gray would leave the Moku Moku no Mi to Volo, as that would surely encourage more conflict within that family. So, I would say maybe have him take the Moku Moku no Mi sooner from one of Gray's visits, or, have Volo's gramps come to terms with his son's death after finding out that Gray is visiting the loved ones of each one of his deceased crewmates. ]
