Grover Aurum
Basic Character Information
Starting Bonus: Force Is Strong | [Starting Bonus Roll]
First Name: Grover
Middle Name/Initial: N/A
Last Name: Aurum
Epithet: None Established
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Race: Klabautermann
Faction: Ex-Pirate
Affiliation: Ex-Member of the Gilded Skulls
Position: Shipwright
Profession:
Wanderer - Grover's been drifting about for quite a long while. While it doesn't come with a lot of prestige or particularly marketable skills, it does mean Grover is quite good when it comes to getting around by foot or by boat. He's also quite good at taking care of himself.
Gardener - One of the things that Grover learned to do early on was to grow and harvest various small plants, trees, and the like for resins, saps, and fibers that could be used to make fantastic medicines. Grover was no doctor though, and instead adapted the techniques to make special compounds and materials for fixing ships.
Shipwright - Should probably go without saying, but Grover knows his way around a hull or two. He's quite adept at keeping a ship going, and figuring out what ails a ship. After all, it takes one to know one.
-------------------------------------------------
Physical Appearance
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 162 lbs
Hair Style: Shaggy, medium length
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Yellow
Scars: None
Clothing and Accessories:
Grover keeps it pretty simple. Wearing a drab olive jumpsuit with a hood, that's about the most of his core clothing people see. He does, however, wear a white tee shirt and blue knee-length shorts under the hooded garment. Black boots and a set of goggles complete the look of a handyman. There is a toolbelt around his waist more often than not, with an assortment of mallets, chisels, pliers, and the like.
Detailed Description:
Grover is easy to lose in a crowd, being just short of the average young man, his dark hair only helping him blend seamlessly into a crowd. Between his height and basement-dweller pale skin, one would hardly expect the lanky guy to be of much help in just about anything. Despite this, underneath the dark green coveralls, there's a surprisingly athletic body, honed to its most agile. Despite being mostly unremarkable, he does have a few calling cards; one being the set of yellow-lensed goggles he packs, the other being a thin yellow headband that just barely manages to keep his bangs from falling in front of his eyes. The accessories go nicely with his sunshine yellow eyes, which totally aren't distinct at all... Especially since Grover isn't a spooky ghost. Nope. Not at all. And most certainly not the spirit of a old pirate vessel...
-------------------------------------------------
The Past
Main Traits:
- Relaxed
- Non-Confrontational
- Friendly
Likes: Seafaring vessels, puppies, rainy days, fruits, and slow, lazy sailing on a calmly rocking boat.
Dislikes: Loud people, warmongering, hot temperatures, lying, and anyone who abuses their ship.
Hometown: Water Seven
Personality:
First and foremost, Grover is a calm and collected sort of guy, rarely without a small smile on his face. It does him no good to stress over things, and while it might take him a bit longer to do things than the average worker, his quality of work is more than worth the wait. That said, the one thing that ruins his otherwise unflappable personality is being the center of attention. Usually, he's a follower, and easily pressured into doing things, so when he's the center of attention, his lack of initiative starts to show. It's when he's working as part of a crew that he truly shines though, as he's quick to trust his allies, and easily forms loyalties, even if that might lead to him being a bit naive.
Grover happens to be quite a smart fellow, as long as he isn't to be believed. The wandering spirit can be a bit of knucklehead at times, and easily falls into the trap of self-depreciation, leading to a bit of a confidence problem. Despite this, he's quite optimistic as long as it doesn't directly involve his own endeavors. His relaxed, daydreaming style might make him seem lazy, but it can lead to unusual, imaginative solutions to complex problems.
That said, he can wind up clashing quite a bit with people that are loud and energetic. His carefree attitude often irks them in some way, sparking a conflict that often won't ever be resolved properly. Even so, Grover won't truly hate them so much as be mildly annoyed. The only people that truly earn his hatred are those that instigate conflict at every opportunity, and those that think nothing of causing collateral damage. Often going hand-in-hand, their destructive natures clash truly with Grover's peaceful and considerate nature. Of course, anyone who disrespect and abuse ships earn his ire as well. Few have seen the shining gold death glare, but to abuse one's own ship is the fastest way to see it.
- History:
Grover was born 32 years ago, by the skilled shipwrights of Kanpai Company, a group of former pirates who banded together to make pirate vessels. Known for building durable, long-lasting ships, Kanpai Company had built a real beast of a vessel when they created the Golden Orchard for the soon to be captain of the Gilded Skull Pirates. Captain Victoria Sloan, being the adventurous soul she was, immediately took to the seas, exiting the grand line and making he way through the South Blue. The small crew she assembled were all merry-making sorts who robbed from the rich and spent generously at the ports of the poor. After gaining a truly dependable crew, the captain went back into the grand line, seeking to take on the true challenges that awaited there.
It wasn't until then that Grover had gained enough power to manifest. It was because the last member of the crew was their shipwright, Kaylee Sparks. She was the glue that held the team together at the worst of times, and showed them how to truly appreciate the ship that they ventured upon. He'd watch over her as she worked, plugging away tirelessly to keep the ship in perfect order, and started to carry on her work whenever sleep did get the better of her. When she began to notice his work, she caught him in the act, and formed a relationship that was almost that of mother and son.
As the crew went through crazier and more dangerous adventures in the grand line, he became more and more an actual member of the crew. Doctor Phinneas Shae taught him how to care for the small grove of plants that grew on the upper deck, the aged apothecary inspiring the young spirit to come up with new techniques to repair their vessel, which he happily shared with Kaylee.
The happy days eventually passed though, as the Grand Line eventually got the better of the Golden Orchard and the Gilded Skull Pirates. They ran afoul of an absolute monster, a man known as the Grinning Shaman. bearing the devil fruit's power, he had the ability to rip souls from their bodies, leaving the body helpless until the spirit can return. Attacking from a heavy fog, the Grinning Shaman struck hard and fast, leaving their bodies helpless as the bloodthirsty crew happily executed the helpless bodies so that souls could not return. He took each soul and trapped the body-less spirits within grave markers.
Grover hadn't been captured though. Instead, the attack had left him ejected from the ship entirely, carried away by the currents while he tried to get his bearings and get back to the ship. Hours of desperate searching turned to days, days of sorrow turned to months. In those months, his power waned. Separated from the Golden Orchard for so long, all he eventually could do was hold tight to floating debris before he was picked up by a salvaging crew.
Unaware of the fate that had befallen his crew, he wandered the seas in an ever-widening search. Nobody was able to provide any real clues, so all he could do was keep looking. But the more time he spent away from the ship, the more he weakened, until the Gilded Skulls were distant, fond memories, and his incorporeal spirit had become permanently corporeal. Part of him remembered that the captain had gone to one of the blues to get their start. Maybe they had returned? All he had left was the desperate willpower to get back to his crew, but it was all he needed to be bound to the world. He'd find his crew, he'd find his real body. Those happy, exciting days of adventure would happen again some day.
So he drifted through the blues, searching with less and less clues every passing month. He'd gathered a bit of a reputation though, as a wandering shipwright. If a ship was in desperate need of repair, with a crew unwilling to part ways with their vessel, a lone shipwright would be drawn to them. By days end, the ship would be able to make it to the next port thanks to that wandering repairman. Grover took a lot of pride in that, and while he hasn't given up hope of finding the Gilded Skulls or the Golden Orchard, he's made it his goal to make sure no other ship suffers the kind of emptiness that he feels.

It was an interesting read to be quite honest. It wasn't race I'd surely ever think to pop up on our good ol' forum but nonetheless, it has. I won't lie, I was skeptical going into this application but I'm glad I read it from start to finish. I certainly hope Grover finds the Golden Orchid or his true home on the seas, who knows! All in all, I'm curious to see where you go with it~ Approved!
