Kale E. Nightshade
Basic Character Information
Starting Bonus: Tough Guy. | [Starting Bonus Roll]
First Name: Kale
Middle Name/Initial: E.
Last Name: Nightshade
Epithet: Black Lotus
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Faction: Pirate
Professions:
- Historian: In her earlier years Kale studied all forms of history she could get her hands on and has a great love for learning of events that transpire in the world, no matter how bright or bleak they are.
- Linguist: In her pursuit to learn history Kale ended up having to learn several different languages. While her ability to speak many of these languages is debatable her focus was always being able to read them.
- Blademaster: While kale can fight with her bare fists, she prefers to have a blade in her hand or at least on her person. Originating from her need to hunt animals to survive kale eventually graduated to more self-aware targets and has since become fond of finishing enemies she views with some respect off with her blade rather than a bullet.
- Marksman: Projectile weaponry is Kale’s first resort to combat as it is the safest possible avenue of attack. While she prefers to always possess a blade in some form, a gun will do for the majority of the killing. A bullet or arrow might cost her some berries, but when it comes to the chaff her time is more valuable, so bullet it is.
Physical Appearance
Height: 5’ 3”
Weight: 100lbs
Hair Style: Long/Straight
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Red
Scars: N/A
Clothing and Accessories:
Kale’s attire has varied throughout her life, along with her preferences. When it comes to high society, long elegant dresses, pearl necklaces, gemmed rings, etc. are all she desires to truly wear, especially to blend into a crowd that is so frivolous with money. How she manages to acquire such possessions before she enters a fancy gathering can be left up to speculation since she normally wears a different set of attire.
That attire being more common clothing. Typically, she will wear a blouse or loose shirt, coupled with either short skirts or loose jeans. She dislikes sleeves on her shirts on for the most part so she’ll either roll them up or cut them off, however she does enjoy a good jacket. To that end, she typically wears a long coat with her outfits to both keep warm out on the seas and long nights, but also to hide various weapons such as pistols and knives on her person. She’ll still draw suspicion but she figures she already draws it on occasion so might as well be prepared for conflict anyway.
In terms of the color, when it comes to masquerading around, she’ll use any that suit the situation or the character she came up with the best. For her personal attire, Kale typically uses a red, grey, and black color pallet making her clothing look uniform but a bit broody. Secretly though she loves the color pink, and if it wouldn’t ruin her “cool” demeanor she would probably go overboard with pink attire.
Description:
Slim and Athletic are two words to describe Kale’s body. Not so skinny as to look unhealthy her overall structure is toned and tempered. Her body doesn’t lack for feminine charm, her soft facial features belying her more cunning nature. Her skin has hints of a rosy shade, but due to her obsession with reading books, she typically lacks any form of a tan. Despite it being a pain to maintain on many days Kale keeps her hair long, typically reaching to around her knees in length. Rarely will she put her hair in any style other than down; the exception being at occasions she wishes to make an impression. Her eyes are a vibrant red in color which both clash and compliment her hair and skin color. Upon her upper-middle back is the tattoo in the style of a blooming lotus, etched in black ink.
The Past
Main Traits: Cunning/Obsessive/Stubborn/Pragmatic
Likes:
- Books: Kale loves to read so naturally she loves books, specifically history books but some fiction never hurt once in a while.
- Coffee: It’s as black as her soul! Nah, she just likes the taste of more bitter foods, plus it lets her stay up reading longer.
- Fishing: It’s a relaxing sport but she still gets to kill something, what’s not to like?
- Plushies: Small plushies are cute, and if she could sleep in a bed made out of stuffed animals.
- Arrogance: Opposite to most, kale enjoys the arrogance of others. Those who are arrogant tend to be selfish enough to lightly manipulate, and that’s all it takes for her to get what she wants most of the time.
Dislikes:
- Nobility: Specifically those who haven’t earned their power as the majority of them abuse the people. On the other hand, them being most likely arrogant as well does help her out in the long run, but she still finds them irritable.
- Dregs: The opposite side of society, those who don’t contribute or try and move up in the world. At the very least she can respect a criminal, but she can’t respect someone who doesn’t even try to do anything.
- Candy: She lacks a sweet tooth, and often dislikes candy due to the pure sugar rush she can get afterward.
- Heroes: Don’t be a big dumb hero and try to help everyone, by a small smart individual who maybe helps a few but still skims off the top.
- incompetence: She loves it when she is fighting against it but hates it when it’s on her side. Mistakes are fine but being unable to deliver on anything, get out of her sight.
Unique laugh: Hehehehe…
Hometown: Holy Land Mary Geoise [Exiled]
Personality:
Kale’s personality is molded by a combination of her poor decisions and cultured upbringing. Carefully kale chooses the words she speaks, carefully crafting every sentence to fit the situation at hand. This pattern of speech emerged due to a need to make others do as she wanted in order for her to simply survive. In this way, Kale can appear as almost any personality type so long as it will benefit her current or future situation. It isn’t perfect, but her aptitude for conversation, patience in persuasion, and her composure in high society make Kale a master class actress, or to those who would put it more bluntly deceiver.
Deception in her mind is the same as being cunning and tactical. Never one to rush blindly into a confrontation, Kale would rather disengage than take risks. This is why even as a child kale never pushed the boundaries of what her parents or others demanded, instead merely probing them for hidden boundaries. The scars of her failure and exile taught her the lesson of opportunity, and to never take it for granted.
Wisdom has taught her that such an opportunity won’t just appear one has to make it happen, and there is where her cleverness comes in. While patience and cunning and important, her education taught her one thing, to not be stronger than your enemy, but cleverer. Behemoths don’t need to be toppled by one's raw might when their own might will do just fine. Hubris is a common trend in many in the world who obtain power, and when combined with but a few subtle acts can be made into a beneficial trait for Kale. In that regard kale has found that acting as if she is egotistical works wonders for those who are the opposite, typically leading them to anger or underestimating her own capabilities.
Sadly, the only thing she can’t act away is her obsessive nature. In Kale’s mind, nothing will stop her from knowing the history of the world, and in many circumstances, that means retreating from a bad situation. This includes if Comrades are in danger, in fact right now the word Comrade means nothing to her. Pragmatic in her approach to close relationships it’s a weakness of Kale’s to not know close bonds, and perhaps that will change in the future. The only real obstacle to such character growth is Kale being stubborn in her beliefs. So far, her methods have worked to keep her alive, and she didn’t need others before her exile, and the only individual who she grew to admire has passed on, so the wound of loss is still deep and hard to fill. Perhaps in time her cynical approach to the world and the pragmatic view of her goal will change, but for now, her personality is befitting of one who experienced the extremes of society.
- History:
One hallowed eve a pair of girls were born in the hold land to a family of world nobles. Out of the pair, this story follows the “older” twin, Kale. While births, especially for a family so influential are celebrated affairs, the true destiny of Kale would forever be shaped differently than the rest of her family. Life for the young child would be simple but elegant, everything provided for her. Prudent and skilled professors would instruct her in the ways of the world, along with other skills such as reading, writing, etc. Whenever she asked for something beyond a rare circumstance it was given to her freely, anything was possible for Kale. Near limitless power corrupts most, certainly, her sister found such luxuries as wonderful rights for her to enjoy, but not Kale, Kale’s mind had far greater ambitions than just living in luxury. Kale never took slaves, she never asked for strange entertainment, the girl only asked for one thing, books. In between her schooling kale would focus mostly on trying to better her knowledge of the history of the world, a topic that fascinated occupying all corners of her mind. She wished to know how it was that her family some of the highest seats of power in the entire world came to be there, but sadly this obsession is the very thing that would cut her quest for knowledge short and turn it to one of survival.
Over the years Kale’s obsession only grew, with her parents mostly ignoring the girl in favor of her twin, though Kale’s sister still held a good relationship with our heroine. Texts became more bordering on heretical or forbidden as Kale’s drive to gain knowledge became a crutch. Eventually, such texts she desired weren’t translated properly so she had to start learning languages in order to make sure the shoddier translations were accurate. Whether she was correct in her translations was hit or miss, sometimes she was humbled and sometimes her small ego grew larger. It wasn’t until one fateful day when she received a strange text about how there was a great hidden secret in the world that could potentially reveal the lost history that her mind wandered to more illegitimate means.
Much to her chagrin, the secret of the world’s history might just lay within the holy land itself, Kale’s own fortune of being born there giving her the briefest of joys till she realized it was so close but so far. She wouldn’t have the authority to access it, no one truly did. She could have tried to join the marines and make it to the highest world government seat or dedicate her life to politics and attempt to manipulate her way into office, but Kale was young and foolish and hadn’t yet learned true patience. She attempted to break in and steal whatever was in the vaults of the holy castle. Naturally, she failed, her captors being those whom she had previously viewed as friends or servants. Such a violation was a grave offense, would it have been a servant or slave they would be killed, but in her case, a “worse” punishment was to be doled out exile.
That would have been it, gone from the land she was born in and set adrift in the world, but Kale was a unique case she had a twin. Instead, an extra measure to make sure she would never be mistaken for her twin was done, she was to be branded. Her family managed to lobby to not have a slave’s brand applied instead her father would tattoo the family symbol upon her back, to forever differentiate the two siblings. The crest was that of a lotus, dyed with black ink, and was the last time she would possibly ever speak to her father. Sent away on a ship she was allowed to request any location to flee to, she picked the blues for the grand line would not be a “paradise” for a disgraced celestial dragon, many would kill her purely for ill-gotten revenge. So, it was she set sail towards the blues and was left on Logue town to fend for herself.
She should have died, but thankfully she had luck on her side. Somehow, she managed to get on board a ship headed for the west blues, since scholars seemed to flock there, Kale believed it would be her best bet to move forward with her pursuits. It was not to be however as during a storm Kale was thrown from the deck of the ship but by what she doesn’t remember. Instead, she ended up on a modest island in the middle of nowhere. Weakened and wore she accepted this was the end, to die on some beach somewhere, but it wasn’t to be instead she woke up in a small but comfortable bed bandaged and warm.
When Kale started to explore, she found a woman living there. Both exchanged stories with Kale expressing her gratitude, unfortunately for the next few years of her life that expression of gratitude would turn out to be a torturous decision. The woman found it prudent to not inform Kale about the location of a boat to sail away from the island, instead, she found it fit that if Kale was so grateful for all the help then she wouldn’t mind helping her survive on this island. Not in much of a position to refuse Kale believed it would be easy. She was wrong. Many of the creatures on the island were large and terrifying, and that was just the herbivores. Quickly Kale learned her own weakness and began to beg the woman to help her, a decision that was the right one but painful. The survival training, she had to learn on that island would have easily broken those less stubborn than her. From hunting to fighting with blades and projectiles, Kale learned the basics of swordsmanship, marksmanship, and survival becoming proficient enough to survive on her own.
As the years started to roll by Kale noticed the woman was getting sicker and sicker, and Kale tried harder to help her live, but one fateful day she passed away. Not since she had been exiled had Kale cried, but at the grave, she buried her teacher in she let the rain flow. With her teachers dying breath however, she had told her the location of her hidden ship. Kale already knew the location and could have left at any time but she didn’t wish to leave this woman to die alone, a strange showing of kindness that kale has yet to repeat to such a degree. Now Kale wanders the Seas in search of clues that lead her to her ultimate goal, the location of the world's lost history.
