Issen Hashiyo
Basic Character Information
Starting Bonus: Super Rookie | Starting Bonus Roll
First Name: Issen
Middle Name/Initial: S.
Last Name: Hashiyo
Epithet: Fog Machine
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Race: Cyborg
Faction: Marine
Profession: Linguist, Historian, Inventor
Physical Appearance
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 230 lbs.
Hair Style: Long, flowing hair to the small of his back.
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Sky Blue
Scars: None
Clothing and Accessories: Issen wears a black version of a marine outfit, bearing the insignia of the marines on his torso. The garb flows off his limbs loosely, and is sometimes ditched in the midst of battle to show a tight, white outfit extending to his wrists and ankles. Around his waist is a simple belt usually bearing a sword.
Description: Issen is as short young man, whose growth was stunted by a surgery to implant devices into his brain and muscles. His skin is pale and the color of his eyes is wide and deep, giving him what looks like a perpetually blank stare. His build depicts that of a lean young man, almost pre pubescent in nature. Issen keeps himself meticulously well groomed and clean, smelling vaguely fragrant.
The Past
Main Traits: Keen memory, Know-it-all, Investigative.
Likes: Stories, old books and artifacts, unique cultures and distinct cuisine, killing criminals.
Dislikes: Notorious pirates, fairy tales, imperfection, sunny weather.
Unique laugh: Huff-hu-hu-hu (usually punctuated by small dissipating clouds of fog)
Hometown: Central Encampment, Thriller Bark, West Blue
Personality: Issen Hachiyo is a know-it-all, quick to correct and suggest. Not only is he confident that his ideas are supreme, but he’ll incessantly let you know of that too. This also feeds into a childish superiority in some realms of competition. Trivia, general history and some more broad content are all parameters by which Issen judges not only himself, but others.
He feels no particular attachment to his cyborg parts. The upgrades were forced upon him and never made by his choice. But, he has come to learn of a greater understanding of their workings through careful study. Oddly, he’s been unable to replicate the success of the device that was implanted inside of his own head. Sometimes, he’ll feel at odds with other humans because of his modifications, thinking himself somewhat of a racial outlier.
Issen hates those who change the world’s story towards that of diabolical machinations. His greatest ambition is to quell their efforts and create a world in which its course is dictated by that of his Gentle Justice. Gentle Justice could be defined as a justice that’s restorative and educational. Issen’s goal is to re-educate and convert the villainous and cruel towards a road more pleasant and well-meaning. He wishes to spread this Gentle Justice throughout the marines and even the world of freedom-seekers, like pirates and revolutionaries. Issen vehemently believes in second chances.
A rampant polyglot, Issen can even speak languages lost to the winds of time. He aspires to know and own more, and has a secondary goal of learning every language spoken by those on the oceans. He feels by becoming the perfect being of communication, he can help to usher in his era of Gentle Justice.
Issen does have a hobby of collecting old artifacts and tools, like old swords, tomes and other such oddities. He sometimes considers a side job of opening a museum. While he is very persistent in quelling the blazes of injustice and hate, Issen will often make a point to visit the historically and culturally significant places of interest on islands he visits. This can sometimes give others the impression of an idyllic sightseer, rather than a seeker of justice.
- History:
Issen is a cyborg implanted with the ability to acutely remember all the things he’s experienced. He was sold to a crusty historian, Cress Hachiyo as a baby, who quickly took residence on Thriller Bark, an otherwise abandoned and mostly haunted island. Issen was never told the origins of his name, or the debt which he was sold to repay, but he wasn’t given much time to learn them anyways. From a very young age, Issen was set to the task of reading an endless stream of historical books and encyclopedias, all meant to turn him into the best possible reference material for his owner.
Cress himself was a failing novelist, who wrote historical fiction after living out a mostly unremarkable career as a marine. Issen held no love for the man, who was cold and cruel, and was mostly happy when he died, as it meant he no longer was held by any of the chains that weighed him down. For nearly a year after his death, Issen spent his time scavenging the ashes of Thriller Bark for sustenance, hunting for food, and reading. In reading the books Cress left behind, he came to know an alternate history that the veteran had constructed on paper.
These tales altered the world into something just a note brighter and more peaceful. A constant theme in them was to ask the question “What if?” trying to create a world in which people chose to be better versions of themselves. In which pirates weren’t as cruel and marines weren’t as vindictive. It was far gentler than the cruel reality laser-etched into the young boy’s memory. They were the fanciful flights of a failure.
Nearly a year after the novelist’s death, Issen burned all of the man’s books in a grand bonfire, scorching the earth of Thriller Bark even more deeply. The light and smoke of this conflagration earned the attention of a wandering ship that submitted the boy to a local Marine Branch. There, Issen enlisted, taking the old man’s last name, not as an admission of affection, but as a vow of ambition.
With the force of Issen’s Gentle Justice, he would absolutely wrench the grand story of the world into something completely different from where it looks poised to go. He will not drown himself in a fake world of niceties, but forcefully erect a society closer to that of perfection.

This was quite an interesting read, and very well put together! Gentle justice sounds pleasant and reassuring. One inconsistent thing I noted though was how Issen's likes list "Killing Criminals". To me, this seems to contradict his gentle justice ideology. I'm approving this bio, but if you'd like to change/explain this contradiction, please let me know on Discord!
