The addition of a six-chambered swing-out cylinder and a rapid-fire trigger on both guns causes Max to be able to shoot just that bit faster.

The coat serves as a constant reminder to Max that he's not alone. There are still people watching over him.

The toe caps have been reinforced with steel.

Here's a suggestion that'd make for a fun scene to write:
Rue steals a pair of shoes one day from a travelling performer as the ones he has are getting quite old. Little does he realize that the performer's flying act was all thanks to the dials in his shoes. The first time Rue tries walking in that man's shoes, he goes flying into a ceiling or a wall.
