Aya "Pikasso" Ruiz
Basic Character Information
First Name: Aya
Last Name: Ruiz
Epithet: "Pikasso", "The Phantom Artist", "MijikAya" (Affectionately, from Family or Minks close to her Family)
Birthdate: 1804
Gender: Female
Species/Race/Tribe: Mink
Faction: Civilian/Other
Profession: Artist, Small-time Thief, Forgery Specialist (Art, Signatures, Documents, ect), Wanderer
Physical Appearance
Height: 4'5" (~134cm)
Weight: 120lb (~54kg)
Hair Style: Straight, cut into a sharp bob with a short ponytail at the nape of her neck
Hair Color: Bright red
Eye Color: Icy blue
Scars: Small slash across the bridge of her nose.
Clothing and Accessories: Aya tends to change clothes often, trading clothes with friends she makes along her travels and sometimes nabbing articles off of clothes lines if she spots ones she particularly likes, replacing them with other pieces of clothing from her own small, ever-changing wardrobe. She often enjoys emulating the clothing styles of places she visits. She is hardly ever seen without her dark velvet beret, as well as a large bright white stone pendant with a rabbit carved into it. A large brass ring with geometric patterns carved into it that matches pieces owned by each of her brothers is pierced into one of her ears. During her travels she keeps most of her belongings in a large, olive-green backpack, including; art supplies, a small amount of clothing, bamboo water 'bottles', and snacks.
Description: Particularly short in stature, Aya is the 'runt' of her family. Her fur pattern varies in shades of deep crimson, black, and cream, with dusty pink paw pads on her hands and pointed claws. Much of her face has cream colored patches and dark markings under her eyes. Her bushy tail is burgundy and cream striped, measuring nearly 6 feet long.
The Past:
Main Traits: Relaxed, soft-spoken, creative, loyal, easily spooked
Likes: Clove cigarettes, red wine, fresh paint, unique landscapes, people-watching, Cafes, flowers, dark coffee, sweets and baked goods, Family
Dislikes: Destruction of beauty, unnecessary violence, disloyal actions, liars, short jokes
Unique laugh: Kiiiii-pi-pi! [Nasal-y Twittering]
Hometown: Kurau City; Zou/Mokomo Dukedom
Personality: After first glance nothing in the day-to-day seems to bother Aya much. She is constantly seeking to indulge in simple pleasures of life outside Zou, taking her time with travels and often going far out of her way just to seek out some rumored scenic spot. She is a compulsive eavesdropper and easily distracted by the business of others. She values expression and authenticity, though like many Minks sometimes comes off a bit naïve and unassuming, especially towards those claiming to be sided with Minks. She tries to blend in and try to gather information before approaching most situations. Aya is particularly excitable when meeting with other Minks, letting her walls fall and the affectionate ways of Mink culture undeniably show. Despite dangerous and vicious encounters with humans she holds no grudge against Lesser Minks as a whole, but remains cautious and often tries to avoid them all together when she can avoid it.
When possible, Aya spends most of her time travelling at night, preferring the cover that darkness offers and often camps or posts up around scenic spots until the perfect time of day to paint the landscape. Though she claims to have no personal qualms about the Navy or World Government, she does avoid them at almost all costs, and has been known to regard Naval or Government bases as an 'Eyesore', claiming the stark 'Justice-White' often ruins naturally occurring landscapes of islands.
Aya still retains many Mink Cultural quirks due to her aversion to others and therefor her lack of integration with the world around her. Often she is an observer, believing that it is much easier to let herself fade into the landscape than let others see her and managing to be both a hermit and a wanderer.
- History:
Aya was born in Zou to a Red Panda Mother (Sonya) and a Hare Father (Thumper), and is the only daughter amongst eleven younger brothers (Flopsi, Binki, Peter, Oswald, Humphrey, Harvey, Brer, Bucky, Fiver, March, and Lucky) and one elder brother (Oolong.) With her younger brothers being born in batches of twins, triplets, and even a set of sextuplets, she spent most of her young life helping to raise her brothers alongside her parents and her doting elder brother. Leading a chaotic but happy life, she found ways to escape the havoc so many siblings and sneak away time to herself. Sonya had shown Aya how to make paints from flowers found in the forests of Zou when she was little, and the girl subsequently took to art like she was made for it. Her brother always talked about dreams of life outside of the safety and comfort of Zou, an inspiration that followed her to adulthood. At a young age most of her younger brothers showed interest in joining the forces guarding the Mokomo Dukedom, meaning Aya and Oolong's guidance now often included sparring practice and training to hone the young Minks' natural skills which in turn gave the two practiced confidence in these areas.
During a training session focused on difficult terrains in the Whale Forest, the pack of siblings stumbled across something strange in the upper boughs and thick foliage of The Whale. A small, simple boat that seemed like it would have been out of place in the seas surrounding Zou was stuck in the fork of a large branch, along with a set of heavily damaged bones they presumed to be human, and a small chest. Upon cracking open the chest in question, they found something even stranger. Aya (13) and Oolong (15) instantly mistook it for a Mizu Shingen Mochi, a treat their Father had told them about encountering during his travels as a young buck, and as such played a particularly fateful game of Janken to determine who would try it first before rationing the rest to the other siblings. Unbeknownst to her, Oolong threw this game, letting Aya win and subsequently allowing her the first bite as a reward. The taste was awful, as to be expected from a Devil Fruit. As the effects settled in almost immediately, she now found herself able to turn herself and anything she touched clear. Terrified that their parents be fearful of what the children believed to be a curse from a 'Dead Man's Mochi' her brothers urged her to keep the new ability under wraps.
At 16, Aya had made herself known as a particularly talented artist, being commissioned all over Zou to paint murals, family portraits, and taking on extensive creative projects around the living island. Her family and the other Minks had come to the understanding of the new abilities she possessed and the dangers of such as they spoke with those who had left their home land and returned to tell the tale. After a while Aya's heart began to yearn for new inspiration. There was a whole big world outside of Zou, full of adventure and Lesser Minks and all sorts of things she could only dream of. That much she was sure of. After all, that was what Oolong had always dreamed of and the flames of adventure in his heart were only stoked by stories from The Feral Pirates on their returns back to Zou. It only seemed natural that at 18 her beloved older brother left alongside Firebear'd and the others, joining up with the crew and devoting himself to a Pirate's life. Her promised to meet back up with her one day to show her all the fantastic places he'd seen in his travels so she could paint them, and with plenty of tears the family said goodbye to the eldest.
Several years later, Aya herself left Zou on a small ship crafted by a few of her brothers (Oswald, Fiver, and Humphrey, who had taken to carpentry, ship building, and research respectively) and with Fiver and Oswald to keep her from falling overboard. With much luck they made their way to the nearest populated island they could find. Before they could even say goodbye, onlookers had taken up arms and fired a warning shot at the freaks that dared set foot on their island home. The bullet from the Lesser Minks caught the trio off guard and as Aya turned to take one last look to her brothers the 'warning' shot grazed the bridge of her nose; very narrowly avoiding outright killing the girl. As her brothers riled at the audacity of the Lesser Minks their sister disappeared completely and put everything she had into giving the small boat one last shove off of the shore. Blood and tears stained the sand as she waved goodbye, realizing soon after that they couldn't even really 'see' her off.
From then on Aya's life was a quiet but fast-footed one. She was well practiced in keeping nearly silent, and found the easiest ways to get around were to go completely unnoticed amongst civilians and giving any signs of Navy the most distance she could manage. Her artistic capabilities, attention to detail, and ability to make canvas or paper transparent have all proven to make her a skilled forger. She is still trying to find a viable use for this new skill. For now, she revels in the freedom of a solitary life. She paints when she wants to paint, eats what she can steal, and sleeps where she can find refuge from the prying eyes of the harsh world for a moment, all with the knowledge she may be found out and have to flee at any moment. She devotes her life to enjoying the sights, finding ways to sneak into quiet cafes, awe-inspiring churches, and the hulls or rigging of ships to stow away and slowly work her way across the seas; a lonely phantom in a chaotic but picturesque world.
