Even as Yumiko teetered on the brink of unconsciousness, she still scraped together a couple of seconds to worry about her master. Byron’s boisterous threats fell to deaf ears. Well, rather, she was so used to hearing such sludge that it all blended together in her ears. Instead, her attention was drawn to her captain getting crushed under a pirate’s heel. She was only a heartbeat away from violating every vow of honor -and from making a terrible mistake- before the man suddenly rose with a powerful warcry. It felt foolish to worry over him anymore... Her cold gaze shifted onto the sneering pirates before her. She crossed her claws. “Let us... end this...” Her fur bristled with invisible power. [Busoshoku Haki - Defensive] She would kill them... Every. Last. One.

Unfortunately, the sniper still had the weasel woman in his sights. He brought the crosshairs over her head and slowly squeezed the trigger. “Good riddance...” [HT - Headshot] The gunshot echoed through the room. It felt like time itself stopped to hold its breath. In that very instant, the target lifted her claws ever so slightly. She wasn’t sure why she had... Instinct perhaps... But it was not a moment too late. [LT - Unwavering Conviction] The rifle shot clashed against her claws, forcing them apart. Its trajectory was affected barely enough, grazing a deep, red line against the marine’s skull. She recoiled... But refused to fall. Her clawed paw stomped against the floorboards to steady the rest of her body. Blood poured down her face, painting her vision red. Close... Too close...

However, during that brief distraction, one particularly sly crook managed to creep behind her. A single swing from a two-by-four was plenty enough. [UT] Twirling stars flooded her vision in a flash of pain, before murky darkness swallowed everything like a wave of tar. All that bravery, all that bravado, drained from her limp body as it slumped lifelessly onto the floor. Reminiscent of hungry scavenger birds, the pirates flocked to the downed foe. Someone made cruel suggestions about how to best use her body. Others laughed in agreement. Another called dibs on her clothes. When his criminal comrades gave him a judging stare, he insisted that he liked to feel pretty. At least she didn’t hear any of this... Lost in a dreamless sleep, she would be out of the fight for a while...

Once again, she had failed her duty.

Anton charged towards Byron, blades drawn. He was angry, he was energized, and he didn't want to give Byron a moment's rest. Closing the gap rapidly, he slashed his twin blades, catching Byron in the chest, growl of pain erupting from Byron's throat. [Anton's UT, hit]

Catching himself, Byron lurched forward. From this close, he couldn't miss. With a growl, he slammed his body right into Anton, sending him flying backwards. [Byron's MT, hit]

Landing on his feet, Anton gripped his twin blades, ready to keep fighting.

And that's when the gunshot rang out.

Anton's eyes widened as Yumiko fell to the floor, bloody and beaten. He could vaguely make out the pirates' jeering. Everything just seemed to freeze.

Byron snarled. The young marine was ignoring him again for that damn woman! Well, he wasn't going to let an opportunity pass. He charged, raising a fist.

And then the whole room seemed to explode.

There was no fireball, or any deafening roar. Just the high pitched ringing in his ears and the force of what felt like cannons smashing into his body. The walls cracked, the floors splintered and broke apart. A nearby statue crumbled apart. Byron was almost brought down to one knee by the shock.

And then, the onslaught was over, leaving the ringing in their ears. Byron watched as his crewmates collapsed to the ground. The only one untouched was Yumiko's unconscious form. [Byron's Lat, miss] [Trembling Din - AoE, hit]

Byron was panting heavily, blood dripping from his lips. He couldn't comprehend what just happened. Just that now, his crew was down.

"Damn...DAMN YOU!" he howled, staggering to his feet and charging at Anton.

Suddenly, gunshots rang out. Byron let out a startled cry as he stumbled back.

Anton looked over towards the broken doors. There, guns smoking in her hands, was Celia Stanson. [Celia's MT & UT, hit]

As the small woman stepped in, the masked form of the ship's doctor came through. Eyes immediately falling onto Anton, hequickly dashed forward. Bandages shot out like whips, binding Anton's body before he could react, stopping any bleeding he was experiencing. [Dr Black's MT, hit]

Celia stood by her captain's side. "We thought you could use some help," she said. Anton gave a small nod, not taking his eyes off of Byron. "Dr. Black, tend to Yumiko." The doctor nodded. "TmYes sir."

Byron snarled. All of a sudden he was down to one man, and now there were more marines. This was not how it was supposed to go!
He brought a fist down, gripping some of the ruined floor, and with a mighty heaven, launched it right at the marines. Anton and Celia were caught by surprise, while Black managed to avoid the attack.[Byron's UTs, 2 hit, 1 miss]

"Celia! Are you alright?" Anton called, concerned. It looked like she had taken the brunt of that hit. Celia climbed to her feet, nodding. "I'll be fine. This one's the only one left?"

Anton nodded as Celia pulled two more guns from her cloak. "Then let's bring him down!"

Like any average Zoan falling unconscious, the weasel woman quickly shifted back into her human form. Her face twisted first, returning to its original shape. The monstrous claws shrunk to nothing, leaving only regular fingers. Her white fur receded, vanishing into her skin without a trace, until only her actual hair remained. Little by little, all the animalistic features faded away. With them, any sense of power and intimidation vanished, like mist into the wind. This wasn’t a mythical creature... Not anymore. Blood stained her wounded skin, slowly seeping onto the floor. She was barely breathing anymore.

Resembling a flock of vultures digging into a carcass, the pirates latched onto their unconscious foe without a shred of mercy. Greedy hands groped her body for loot. Failing to find any gold or other valuables in the folds of her clothing, their attention shifted onto the garb itself. They ripped it apart, eager to see what secrets it was hiding. Her favorite kimono was quickly ruined... Yet there was no treasure here either. Only a small hip flask clattered against the floorboards. The most curious pirate rolled the cork open and took a sip. A grin painted his features, as he declared it booze. Strong stuff too. Another crook snatched her sword instead, commenting how it never hurt to have more weapons. Yet... The others, disappointed by the meager haul, shifted their eyes onto the bindings securing her chest. The last line of defense for her dignity. With a tasteless joke about pirates always getting their booty, one of them reached for the thin fabric.

A violent shockwave shook the room.

Not a moment too late, Anton put a stop to the crude assault. In a single blow, he accomplished what his First Mate could not. The pirates dropped like wobbly bowling pins. He had saved her. Again. But at what cost...? What kind of damage had he just done to her self-esteem? ...Well, maybe it was a little unfair to ponder that right now, what with an angry giant threatening to flatten them all. Fortunately, the doctor hurried to the wounded woman’s side. He would find himself having to pull double duty in patching up the patient while also protecting her.

With the arrival of Celia and Dr. Black, and the defeat of Byron's flunkies, the battle was back into full swing. Everything seemed to slow down around Anton as he launched himself towards Byron. [Kenbonshoku Haki, active] Rapidly closing the gap, Anton swung his twin blades, catching Byron across the chest for some light damage [Anton's UT, hit]

Byron, bleeding and hurting, let out a roar and dove for Anton, bringing both his fists down in a mighty hammer blow. When the attack hit, it seemed like the marine crumbled far too easily. It was second later he hadn't hit Anton, but what seemed like a papery double of him... [Byron's MT, miss] [Shed Skin - LT, activated]

...because Anton was right in front of him, actually looking better than he had before. The grasshopper man spun in the air, delivering a sharp kick right to Byron's face, causing him to stagger back. [Pirrohuette - MT, hit]

With Byron staggered, Celia and Dr. Black moved in. Celia, drawing guns rapidly from her cloak, peppered the large Pirate with bullets before he could react. It was like hitting the broad side of a barn. [Celia's MT & UT, hit] Dr Black lashes out with bandages like a whip, wrapping them around Byron's face to blind him, pulling him down to the ground with a crash. [Dr. Black's MT, hit] Keeping him bound in bandages, he closed in, swinging a punch right at his face. [Dr. Black's UT, hit]

Unfortunately, the two lacked the same force and power as their leader. Allowing Byron a chance to recover. Gripping the bandages wrapped around his face, he tore them free, bellowing as he started to swing the doctor around like a flail. Dr. Black was launched right into Celia, crashing into her as they fell in a heap [Byron's UTs (×2), hit]

Fueled with rage, Byron charged towards Anton, aiming to swing a fist. Anton leapt into the air to dodge, but suddenly, Byron seemed to shift gears, his fist suddenly reaching out and grabbing Anton by the leg. With a mighty swing, he slammed the marine into the floor like a club. [Byron's LT, hit] Not finished yet, he threw Anton hard into a wall, almost causing it to cave in and create another hole in the side of the mansion. [Byron's LT, hit]

But Byron wasn't the only one powered by anger. Adrenaline running through him, Anton kicked himself off of the wall just as Byron was charging at him, delivering a sharp kick right into his sternum, further aggravating the wounds he had already received. [Snap Kick - LT, hit]

Byron stumbled back, growling in pain and anger. His hand reached back, grabbing the nearest thing he could find, which happened to be one of his discarded shields. He launched the hunk of metal, catching Anton in the face with a loud clang. [Byron's UT, hit]

Anton stumbled and caught himself, slowly glaring back at Byron. Silently, he wiped away a bit of blood leaking from his nose. It was clear Anton was more than ready to continue.

Little by little, the seeping of crimson slowed... Life stopped slipping away from the fallen marine, bound into her body by an unseen thread. The will to live was not something to be taken lightly. Yumiko’s willpower had always been something unusual. Some of her superiors had described her as determined, others as stubborn to a fault. Either way, now that undying willpower was coming in handy. Even though she looked a lot like a limp noodle sprawled on the floor, she was still fighting in her own way. It didn’t really compare to the brawl raging around her, but at the very least she was staying safe for once. ...Relatively safe.

Beneath the lifeless look, the wounded woman’s pitch-black sleep was getting flashes of color. Red clashing against green... More feelings than dreams, she barely registered them. Each strike and shake lost its impact while crossing the barrier of consciousness. Every rumble and roar was dampened to a distant echo. Her face twisted, teeth gritted. Among the flashes there was a deeply unsettling sensation. It clawed at her, like countless hands reaching for her body. Cold shivers crawled along her skin. Words started taking shape inside her head. No... Get away... But they never quite reached her lips. A single finger twitched. Her instincts were desperately trying to shake her awake. Unfortunately, she wasn’t quite ready...

While the battle raged on, it was a small miracle that the collateral damage from the attacks didn’t quite reach Yumiko. Although, maybe it was thanks to all the downed pirates surrounding her. Their bodies acted as sandbags, stopping the stray bits of rubble hitting her. However, such wonderful luck wouldn’t last forever. Hopefully Anton would be able to subdue the rampaging giant before he brought the whole building down on their heads. The numerous, tiny cracks spreading across the walls and the ceiling like spider webs didn’t bode well.

Byron was almost beside himself with fury. How was this even happening? He had ruled over this island with an iron fist, had an entire army of pirates under his command. He was a king! And now this. His men were down, he was wounded, and was continuing to be beaten upon by these damn marines.

The short woman fired another volley of bullets at him. Byron managed to move to avoid some of them, but the sheer majority of them struck him. [Celia's MT, hit] [Celia's UT, miss]. Even that damn masked man managed to get a punch in on him. It barely hurt, compared to the rest, but it was the sheer audacity of it all. [Dr. Black's UT, hit]

But what was most infuriating was that damn grasshopper. As Anton delivered a painful upward slash, Byron almost didn't feel the pain anymore. That, and the sharp kick to the face only caused his anger to grow. [Grind Slash - LT, hit] [Hopper Kick - LT, hit]

The damn marine had ignored him when they first met, more concerned about his crewmate than him. And now, he had the nerve to not simply roll over and die. He was Giant Blood Byron! He had crushed whole squads single handedly, and yet here was this upstart handling him like he was a scrub!

A kick to the sternum was the straw that broke the camel's back. [Anton's UT, hit]

"ENOUGH!" he roared, leaping into the air and slamming into the floor hard. The resulting shockwave splintered the floor and sent planks flying. Celia and Dr. Black yelled out as they were knocked back, but Anton managed to leap out of the way. [Byron's UTs (×2), hit] [Byron's UT, miss]

Heaving with rage, Byron pulled the massive flask from his hip, and noisily began gulping. As the liquid burned down his throat, hecould feel the fire building within him. His eyes almost glowed red.

"DIE!"

The roar was followed by a stream of flame, not unlike a dragon. The flames engulfed the surrounding area, turning the room into a raging inferno. Celia and Dr. Black yelled as they jumped back, narrowly avoiding g the heat. The doctor making sure to prevent Yumiko's unconscious form from getting burned.

Byron laughed maniacally. "Yes! How do you like that!? Now burn to ashes you...damn..." his voice trailed off as he saw someone standing amongst the flames. [Byron's AoE, miss]

Anton stood there, looking like a demon from hell, wreathed by the flames. His eyes, filled with an unholy rage seemed to glow as they looked right at Byron. The Rear Admiral seemed to move in slow motion, at least, he did to Byron. But when Anton swung those blades, Byron seemed unable to move as the twin slices of air crashed into him. Blood flew as the pirate screamed.

From the sidelines, Celia watched with wide eyes. She had never seen Anton like this. And it frightened her.

Through the flames, Anton La'croix began to advance.

Slowly, weakly, a pair of eyes blinked open. The downed marine’s vision was fuzzy. Everything around her seemed so strange, so alien. Only the coldness of the floor felt vaguely familiar. It felt like the sleepless nights back at the ship, when she curled up in front of Anton’s door while on self-imposed guard duty. A sudden roar shook her ringing ears, just like a sudden slam shook the floor. “Ugh...” Her guts were screaming. Merely trying to breathe was sheer agony. She managed to raise her head towards the source of the racket. Seeing the massive pirate chugging down from a flask was the spark that reignited her memories. This was the enemy base... The enemies! Where were...?!

Before the wounded woman could voice her question, another roar chilled her to the core. No, nonono, she couldn’t die just yet! She had to protect-! The thought was cut short by Doctor Black suddenly yanking her to safety. While she did appreciate staying alive for a little longer, her open wounds protested with waves of pain. After a short tumble, she dragged herself upright with gritted teeth. Her gaze swept the bodies lining the floor. Their scents confirmed what her eyes doubted. All her foes had been beaten. And the distinct lack of slash marks told her all she needed to know... Cursing her uselessness, she bottled up the bitter emotions brewing inside her. Not here, not now.

Yumiko’s attention was drawn to the raging inferno. Or more precisely the shape within... Where Byron may have seen a monster, she saw her master marching through fire and flames... Unflinching. Unrelenting. Like a true warrior. Back home, this would’ve been the birth of a new legend. If only she had been a songstress or a poet, rather than... No, she couldn’t even call herself a swordswoman. Not anymore. Gathering her courage, she scrambled onto her feet. “I... can still...!” Oh no, you can’t, her knees immediately scoffed and buckled beneath her weight. She flopped back onto the floor with a pitiful grunt. The spirit was willing, but the flesh was wounded and weak. She could only watch as her glorious master continued battling the fearsome pirate.

But... At least she was in the perfect position to witness what came next...

The flames licked at Anton's coat, barely noticed by the marine as he marched towards Byron. To o lookers, the air around him seemed to ripple, causing the flames to be pushed back lightly, forming a strange sort of aura around him. [Fast Hopping - LT, active]

Byron took a step back, watching with wide eyes. Just what sort of monster was he fighting? Fear gripping him, hdgrabbed the nearest thing he could find, a ruined chair, and hurled it at Anton. The marine seemed to shift to th ed side without missing a step, the chair flying past harmlessly. [Byron's UT, miss]

Several feet from the pirate, Anton stopped, surrounded by flames. Byron braced himself, ready for any incoming attack.

And then, Anton screamed. It wasn't a scream of fear, or even rage, but something like a creature from hell. Whatever it was, Byron watched with wide eyes as the sheer force of it extinguished the flames around them, leaving the room charred.

And there, standing before Byron, was Anton in his human form, glaring at him.

Byron looked down at the man before him. He seemed...smaller now.

He's just a man...only a man...ONLY A MAN!

[Soul Shriek - HT, miss]

Byron let our a roar and charged, throwing his entire body at Anton. Without a word, the marine sidestepped the powerful assault [Byron's MT, miss] Fear was giving way to anger as Byron continued to swing his massive fists, each time Anton silently dodging before seeming to vanish entirely [Byron's LT (×2), miss]

Suddenly, Byron cried out in pain. Anton had somehow gotten behind him and slashed him across the back. [Anton's UT, hit]

And through all of this, Anton remained completely silent. No cries of rage, no nothing.

Yumiko watched in slack-jawed awe as her master extinguished the lingering flames with a mighty kiai, a battle cry that defied description. She had never witnessed such a fantastic feat. Slowly she reeled her jaw back up, so she could properly grit her teeth in ever growing frustration. Of all the horrid, gnawing feelings in the world... Feeling powerless had to be the worst one. She wanted to leap back into the fray, to sacrifice what little life she had left for her master. However, interfering with the battles of others was strictly against the samurai code. Dishonorable and despicable. A strangled growl crawled from her throat. Samurai... Tch, what foolishness! She honestly couldn’t consider herself that anymore! And that’s when the thought took a strange echo from the darkest depths of her mind. Indeed... She was no longer a samurai...

And thus was no longer bound by the samurai code.

Suddenly trails of white fur lined the wounded woman’s features. Her teeth sharpened with a bestial snarl. The hands pushing against the floor turned into claws. Assuming only a partial form this time, she gathered her focus. Without the added size and bulk, she felt so much lighter... Light enough to simply... Jump! With a sudden leap, she launched towards the distracted giant. [LT - Storm Chaser] He barely noticed the blur of black and white coming. “What the-?!” The huge target had no time to dodge as the half-weasel tackled him. ...Yet he didn’t even budge, much less topple over like she had hoped. Her full weight was nothing to the monstrous man.

By now, Byron had recovered from his shock. Mostly. His meaty hands flailed wildly, like he was performing an interpretive dance. [LT - Fling] Yumiko, for her part, kept up the assault. She kicked and scratched him furiously. Clambering around his massive form, she tried to dig her claws into his flesh and failed miserably. [LT - Weasel's Tail] In her desperation, she abandoned all pretense of martial arts, opened her jaws and... “What are yo-? OW! You bit me?!” ...sank her sharp teeth into his neck. [MT - Weasel's Fangs] Yet she couldn’t even draw blood. His hide was far too tough.

But she did manage to piss him off...

Finally the giant pirate managed to catch the frantic marine. “Crazy bitch... Getoffame!” His massive fingers wrapped around her torso... And squeezed. [LT - Getoffame] Yumiko coughed crimson. Her bones creaked and groaned in his crushing grip. Yet she refused to scream. As the last act of defiance, she awkwardly kicked the foe in the face. [UT] That was the famous last straw. Byron promptly hurled the annoying enemy across the room, right at Anton. [UT] If the captain didn’t catch her, she would crash into the nearest wall like a rag doll. Bloodied and broken, she was only barely clinging to life through sheer stubbornness.

As Yumiko was sent flying back, something shot passed Byron, fast enough to send a small shockwave through him. A familiar sensation that made it difficult for his already badly damaged body to move. [Bad Vibrations - LT, hit] Yumiko would find herself not slamming into a wall like she had expected, but caught in two pairs of arms. Anton grunted as his back hit the wall, cushioning Yumiko from the impact.

Slowly, Anton gently set his injured companion down on the floor. His face was blank, his eyes filled with compassion for her. Compassion that instantly faded the moment he looked at Byron.

"I told you...not to touch her..."
He eyes glanced over at the wall beside him, his sword buried in it from when he threw it. Without a word, he yanked it out of the wall, gripping it in both hands.

Then he moved almost too fast to be seen. Anton was in the air, roaring with fury as he came down upon Byron. The pirate let out a bellow of defiance, swinging a massive fist to catch him in the air.

Anton's blade came down like a guillotine, blood flying as it sliced a brutal slash right down the middle, Byron's fist stopping in mid air. [Grand Strike - HT, hit] [Byron's MT, miss]

Byron was frozen for a moment, his body and mind struggling to keep up with what just happened. Slowly, like a great tree falling, the giant blooded pirate crashed to the floor, finally defeated.

A fall thatxwent completely unnoticed by Anton as he moved to Yumiko's side, gently taking her into his arms.

"Yumiko..."

Everything after the fling was just a blur. The pain Yumiko had been expecting never quite came... Instead, she had to settle for the regular agony of bruises and broken bones. Her life was slowly slipping away. And she felt fine. Teetering on the brink of darkness for the third time today, she failed to find the strength to be angry or even upset. No, it all felt so... expected. So very right. She wasn’t quite sure why, until she felt the floor shake one last time. The foe’s fallen shape only vaguely registered in her mind. Finally... It was over...

The wounded woman gasped softly, when the gentle arms lifted her up... And accidentally touched one of her broken ribs. Yet, that pain too numbed when she heard the voice. His voice. Her eyes turned towards him, struggling to stay open. “Master...” It hurt to speak, or even breathe, but she had something to say. Something she had to say. “I... am glad... thy face is the last thing I see...” A soft smile spread across her pale features like a flower blossom rising from snow. Weakly she lifted her hand, wanting to stroke his cheek. “Dying... in thy arms... just like... I... dr...eam...ed...” With one last gasp, the spark of life left her body and her hand fell limp. Grim silence fell like a black curtain over the scene.

...However, if one bothered to check the melodramatic samurai’s vitals even in the most basic way, they would find that she was still breathing. Her heartbeat was steady as well. Zoans were ridiculously durable after all. With proper care, she should fully recover from this. Though whether that was a good or a bad thing would be a matter of opinion. She, for one, would be very upset once she woke up and found herself still alive. Oh well. Anton would get to deal with that a little later. For now, he could bask in the glory of victory. And the warmth of his subordinate’s odd gratitude.
