[Episode] A perfectly good reason to panic.
Sat Jul 09, 2016 3:58 pm
Arid wind blew over the port town known as Nanohana. Sun peeked from the horizon at the docks. It may have been awfully early in the morning, but life was already in motion. Ships sailed in and out at their own chaotic rhythm. Gulls laughed at the silly humans scurrying about in such a hurry. And the pungent scent of the town’s famous perfume lingered in the salty air. It was a new day, full of opportunity!
A sharp-dressed gentleman hopped off with practiced ease. With a tip of his brown, brimmed hat, he bid the fellow seafarers a wordless farewell. A single suitcase was all he carried, all he seemed to even need. Head held high he strutted along the dock, sweeping his sickly green gaze across the populace. Fishermen, merchants and travelers from various corners of the world mingled along. Most importantly... No marines in sight. A lighter flared briefly and soon thin wisps of smoke escaped into the wind. The long cigarette was placed between sharply grinning teeth. Fresh air did always taste better through a filter.
Richard Maxwell, also known as the Plague Rat among people savvy of the pirate world, had just set his shoes on a familiar town to conduct his business. Having drifted all over the world, Alabasta had to be among his favorite places to travel. The weather was wonderful, for starters, so perfectly sunny, warm and dry. He couldn’t even recall when it had last rained. People around here were generally friendly and trusting, lovely folk really. Of course, he also appreciated the ease at which he could just waltz past the city gates. Never had the guards asked him unnecessary questions. Ah, if only it were so easy everywhere.
Brushing the thoughts aside, the doctor pressed onward. There was still the matter of deciding what to do during his stay. Medical services, perhaps? Or maybe he could give that perfume business a try... He weaved through the crowd. Avoiding one person, he accidentally bumped into someone else. "Oh, a thousand apologies." With the friendly smile, he graciously gave way and wandered off. They may not have realized it yet, but that someone was now a money pouch poorer. Deftly the pickpocket slipped the first loot of the day into his own pocket. A little on the light side, sure, but this would do for warm up. It felt good to get back to work.

Old habits die hard. Richard would know. Half the time he just minded his own business when suddenly an opportunity walked into him, begging to be taken. He couldn’t help it if his fingers were deft. It was something akin to a reflex really, if a particularly well-honed one. Thus he rarely paid any mind to the victim. In hindsight, maybe he should have...
The well-dressed crook froze on his tracks, flinching mid-step. A particularly unpleasant chill ran down his neck. Call it paranoia, experience or just a hunch, but he knew exactly to whom that roar was addressed. Someone had caught on quickly, unfortunately. Swiftly he went through his admittedly limited options. As much as he wanted to just keep walking, sadly the ship had kind of sailed on that one. There weren’t too many people in suits around. It was better to confront the guy and play innocent. He glanced back with casual curiosity, as if he too had been just another bystander. No harm in seeing what the fellow wanted, right?
Richard ended up regretting that decision the very instant he spotted the source of the ruckus. Out of all the possible targets available, he just had to go and rob the biggest man in a thousand mile radius. Well, this day was off to a fantastic start. Furthermore, for a brief moment dim images flashed in the back of the doctor’s mind. The massive vagabond seemed distantly familiar, as if he had seen that face somewhere way back when. Newspapers, maybe? However, the thought was quickly dismissed as simply ridiculous, inconceivable even. He had far more pressing matters to handle at the moment.
Mustering the most sincere mask of surprise, the criminal looked around before pointing quizzically himself. "Who, me?" Idly he adjusted his tie, giving the black-clad vagabond ample time to speak his mind. On the surface the gentleman appeared calm and collected. Still, sharp eyes could’ve noticed that every now and then he oh so carefully inched backwards. If he had any say in the matter, he would’ve kept that troublesome stranger as far away as possible. First rule of theft... Don’t get caught. At least this man didn’t look like a marine and thus probably wouldn’t try to arrest him on the spot. Silver linings.

Much to the devious doctor’s surprise, the stranger actually offered to treat him a round. Must’ve been the famous Alabastan hospitality. For a moment there he even dared to breathe easy. "Ah, my generous friend, while I would love to take up your offer, I have important matters... to... uh..." He trailed off as he realized the unnerving truth. That wasn’t a friendly smile. No, that wasn’t a smile at all. Unfortunately, a polite refusal was not really an option.
Maxwell managed to take one step backwards before his shaking knees stopped cooperating. The cigarette slipped from his mouth and hit the sand with a lonely sizzle. Only now it fully occurred to the crook just how massive of a man he had crossed. Just by one glance he could tell that imposing frame must’ve measured at nearly 10 feet and well over 500 pounds. He was effectively a twig next to him and would snap like one too if he got careless. Swallowing that big clump of fear, he offered a weak grin and a strained mutter to match it.
"...well, if you insist."
Thus the criminal reluctantly followed the command. Every shove elicited an involuntary squeak, something reminiscent of a rodent. Or a chew toy. All the while he was wracking his brain trying to find a way out before it was too late. See, he knew this particular scheme by heart. A seemingly friendly stranger offer would lead the unwitting target to a secluded place where he, or his dozen buddies, would rob and beat the victim half-dead. The half part was optional, of course.
Suddenly Richard piped up in his usual amiable tone. He had figured a plan, see? "Ah, but how rude of me, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Anthony Chopper. Just Tony between friends. We are friends, right? Right. Absolutely." Despite saying that, he didn’t dare even glance at his so-called friend. Every few seconds his fingers reached for his neck. For some reason, the tie just wouldn’t feel comfortable.
Without so much as taking a breath, the motor mouth continued his blabbing. "Speaking of friends, a funny coincidence actually, I arrived to Alabasta to meet a dear friend of mine, a Marine Captain, very important and powerful man." Lying through his teeth he was, as always. Fortunately, very few knew his true identity. By wonderful luck, the photo on his bounty poster hadn’t actually caught his face. So he was free to weave a story that people even remotely familiar with him wouldn’t have bought in a million years. "We’ve known each other for ages. I’m sure he would be awfully upset if something were to happen to me. Eh heheh..." It didn’t come out as nonchalant as he’d liked, but hopefully the fellow would get the hint.

As the realization sank in, Richard’s trembling grew worse. The cocky kidnapper wasn’t buying his subtle threat, not one bit. One of his favorite reasons for visiting the desert kingdom had just ruined his masterful escape plan. Wonderful. "Oh, yes, vacation... Alabasta is such a scenic and memorable location after all... with friendly folk like you around..." Sarcasm dripped from his mutters as they entered the lonely street. Though this was the kind of place he frequented during his visits, there were no friendly faces here. Then again... No witnesses either...
What was with this vagrant anyway? It had been bothering the crook for a while now, the nagging feeling that he had forgotten something. That hand squeezing onto his shoulder certainly wasn’t human. It wouldn’t even budge no matter how he tried to slip free between the steps. He flinched at the accusation, losing his flimsy smile. Again his fingers tugged the tie, trying to relieve the suffocating sensation. Time was running out.
Now, this was the point where most criminals would’ve asked themselves if the meager money was truly worth the trouble. Richard, however, was not like most criminals. His gaze zipped between the vicious scowl and the demanding hand. "Ahah... L-look, friend, I have no idea what you are talking about, I swear..." Second rule of theft... If caught, deny everything. He had stolen that money pouch fair and square, and he wasn’t about to just hand it over. After all, he had been through worse, right? Right.
The trembling rat squirmed within the tight grip, squeaking more lies in attempt to buy time. "Are you absolutely sure you have not mistaken me for someone else? I am but a humble doctor here to help the poor and unfortunate." If this fellow was even half as humane as he pretended, maybe fishing for few pity points would lower his guard. Anything was worth a shot at this point. "Of all the people out there, why would I take your coin purs-?" Reflexively his hand clamped over his mouth, as if that would somehow undo the slip of tongue. Far too late.
Sweating bullets, Richard lost what little composure he had left. His free hand left his mouth to flail wildly as he tried his hardest to defuse the situation. "W-wait, waitwaitwait, wait just a minute... Let’s not get hasty here..." His apologetic tone sounded almost genuine. Almost. Carefully his trembling fingers slipped between his coat lapels. "Silly me, I just remembered I actually do have something for you..." With a sudden swipe, he pulled out his trusty Luger, a simple yet sleek pistol, and aimed it at the vagabond’s heart. "...a bullet with your name on it, friend." But hesitation flashed on his features. ...For an entirely wrong reason. "Well, I... didn’t actually catch your name, but... Eh, you know what I mean." Even he was getting sidetracked by all this chattering.

Re: [Episode] A perfectly good reason to panic.
Sat Jul 16, 2016 8:16 pm
It was approximately three seconds after pulling out the gun that Richard came to regret his decision. Not the fastest he’d ever done that, as her ex-wife firmly held the top spots still, but among the top ten nonetheless. The weapon was showed aside like nothing. His eyes bulged and jaw dropped in breathless disbelief.
The startled crook never had a chance of dodging the punch, even if he fancied himself quick on his feet. He was launched twirling away, leaving behind a cascade of clothing. From his pockets sprayed more than few wallets and watches, along with jewelry belonging to the more feminine gender. However, scattered among them were vials and syringes filled with colorful liquids. Fortunately for both of them, the mysterious concoctions landed on soft sand and stayed intact. Of course, the main prize was there as well, the modest money purse, dropping out of his pants pocket and landing at the end of the item trail.
About ten meters and a light thud later, the crook regained his senses, for the most part anyway. The world was spinning and a pool of deep crimson was forming beneath his face. Concussion, hemorrhage, a possible nasal fracture... He winced at just a light touch of the swelling nose. Definitely a fracture. A tiny sliver of luck had let his suitcase land right next to him. It opened with a comforting click, revealing a huge selection of medical supplies within. Right now, he only needed the brown bottle of antiseptic, a plastic support and some gauze. If the punchy stranger was paying attention, he would’ve briefly seen a master of medical craft in action. Swift and precise, his hands danced faster than average eyes could follow. In mere seconds he had the nose bandaged and the bleeding plugged.
[Bandage]
Working through the throbbing pain, Richard closed the suitcase and swayed up. The quick fix was just cosmetic at this point. Another hit like that and he was down for good. He needed to come up with yet another plan. "Sheesh... What did I do to deserve that...?" It was a rhetorical question in its purest form. He knew exactly what he had done. Whether he had deserved it, however, was always up to debate. As far as he was concerned, he was simply an entrepreneur trying to make a living in this harsh world. Was that so wrong?
While the vagabond was going through the scattered items, the doctor remained on guard. His quivering knees betrayed the brave front he was trying to put up. Not that the lanky man looked especially formidable to begin with in his green, beli symbol decorated boxers. On one hand, he often said he’d rather die than part with his hard-earned loot, but on the other hand this inhuman... thing... might actually kill him. Trembling intensified at the mere thought.
However, even deathly afraid the rat couldn’t resist voicing a retort. "Ahem, I’ll have you know nobody can prove those valuables weren’t honestly gained. So, by all means, rummage through my hard-earned belongings some more, why don’t you? It’s not like I have anything left to hide..." If sarcasm had been tangible, his would’ve stained the ground at his feet. Some would’ve argued that sassing a man who had just sent him flying with a single punch wasn’t wise, but Richard figured it hardly mattered. If this fellow wanted him dead... Well... There wasn’t a whole lot he could do about it, was there?

Two hundred and fifty thousand... The number stung like a needle. Richard could imagine the pouch growing tiny wings and happily flapping out of his reach. He would’ve gotten a lot of handy ingredients with that money, or a nice suit... Such a shame. However, he wasn’t foolish enough to risk his life again for that pouch. He learned from his mistakes, see? That’s how he stayed in business when others got caught.
While the huge fellow seemed to mellow, the crook wasn’t about to drop his guard so easily. He didn’t hold a grudge, no, just a healthy amount of distrust. This man was hiding something, he just knew it. The sudden laughter made him jump back, his hands reflexively searching for the weapons they couldn’t reach. So imagine his surprise when the enemy didn’t move to finish him off, but rather had the courtesy to pick up his scattered outfit. Briefly his quizzical stare zipped back and forth between the seemingly friendly smile and the extended offer. What sort of nasty plan was this foe plotting?
The wary doctor snatched the clothes from the vagrant and backed away, one, two, three steps. Even while dressing, he constantly shot suspicious glances at the man, never leaving him out of sight for longer than few seconds. Between the swift motions, however, he managed to find his smile again, a sharp little grin gleaming with unusual confidence. "Heh, there is no disease I haven’t seen, no illness I couldn’t cure." His former colleagues may not have admitted it, not publicly at least, but he was considered among the best for a reason. There wasn’t much wrong in the world his mixtures couldn’t fix.
It was a matter of mere moments before the criminal was fully dressed again. Nothing taught efficiency like a life of crime. He tugged the brim of his hat down and voiced a question in return. "Why do you ask, stranger? If you are suffering from something, hm, exotic..." He paused for a moment to sweep an analytic gaze over the fellow. "...then you hide the symptoms well. Looking healthy as a horse, as they say." It was simply idle curiosity, a fleeting spark of interest at the topic of diseases. He had little reason to actually help the man, but if chatting about it kept those fists off his face, at the very least he would politely play along.
While chatting, the shivering rat carefully inched around the imposing stranger. His goal was to casually collect the rest of his belongings, starting with the mysterious vials and syringes. The common folk had no idea what they could do. That was his advantage. If he wasn’t interrupted, the dropped items would’ve vanished one by one into his numerous visible and hidden pockets.

Every piece of loot Richard managed to retrieve soothed his greedy soul. Soon, there was not a trace of evidence left. Even the gun was quietly holstered under his coat. Now, all he needed was a plan, an excuse to slip away from this violent vagrant. But the plotting was suddenly sunk by the single most unexpected torpedo. As a doctor he had seen that plenty of times before, from poor beggars to common citizens and even haughty nobles. The fear of what one couldn’t combat quickly brought people to their knees. Truth to be told, he didn’t fully understand why anyone would beg for a life other than their own.
Baffled beyond belief, the doctor cocked a curious brow at the sudden role reversal. "...Pardon?" It took a moment for the criminal to fully process the whole story, letting it echo in the depths of his mind. Someone deathly ill... Few hours away... Money... One detail in particular caught his attention. The name. Gray... Starks... Slowly the new knowledge seeped into the cracks in his memory, restoring a ruined picture into a pristine condition. That particular imaginary snapshot featured a newspaper from roughly four years ago, celebrating the fall of a dreaded pirate crew. And on the front page had been the photo of their captain...
The instant the realization sank in, Richard recoiled in sheer horror. Cold sweat crawled down his skin. "N-no... It can’t be... Th-they said you were dead..." He barely managed to wheeze the whisper past the suffocating fear. All of a sudden he felt so very small, like a flea standing before a giant. His common sense was screaming at him, telling him to run far, far away. This was a perfectly good reason to panic.
However...
Instead of flaunting might or fame, the terrifying man was in fact bowing his head, begging for help. The crook cupped his chin, carefully contemplating his choices. Running now would risk upsetting one of the strongest beings in the world, an extremely poor choice for anyone really. Furthermore, his nose twitched at the unmistakable scent of opportunity~ Life was the most precious thing, no? So, if he played his cards right, he could have an immensely powerful pawn eternally in his debt. Surely just being buddies with the mighty Yonkou would make him untouchable. Heavens opened to cast a white spotlight on him while a choir of angels sung a hymn of fortune. Yes, this had to be his lucky day!
Pushing personal perceptions aside, the doctor returned to reality. Subtly the shivering ended, the smile returned and the swirls in his eyes started bearing uncanny resemblance to a certain symbol of wealth. "My friend... I think we can put our differences behind us. For mutual benefit, of course." He carefully reached out to reclaim the coin purse. If the deceptively powerful vagabond didn’t interfere, he would’ve taken a moment to admire the sigil, most pleased that his new client also understood the value of paying up front. "This should do nicely, but if the case turns out be... challenging... there might be, shall we say, additional costs. Medicine can be quite expensive. I’m sure you understand." His boundless greed was buried within polite phrasing.
"Ah, but we can work out the details later, no? For now, let’s just say that we have a deal."

Hook... Line... And sinker. Much to the criminal’s barely concealed glee, the vagabond swallowed the deal without a question. Naturally he accepted the handshake without a moment of hesitation. People put a lot of value in the simple yet symbolic gesture after all. "I’m sure you will~" Crooked as he was, he would keep his end of the deal. ...As long as the deal was good, of course. A large part of him wanted to assert his expertise, but he wasn’t Richard Maxwell, the world-class doctor, right now. No, he was just 'Tony', a traveling man of medicine. "Worry not, my friend. I’ll do everything I can." Retrieving the suitcase, he followed the lead.
Whilst they walked, the gentleman reached into his pocket and dug out a pristine pack of cigarettes, quite an expensive brand too. Shortly after, a click, a spark and a flicker of flame left behind a soft red glow. He could feel the trail of smoke carrying his lingering worries away. Over the years he had come to appreciate long strolls like this one. They gave him ample time to unwind and plot out his next scheme. Much better than constantly being on the run, certainly.
Upon hearing the sudden question, the rat feigned fleeting surprise. "Well now... You make it sound like I am hiding something." There was no mistaking that sort of smug smile, the Yonkou didn’t buy his story. It did raise a question... Just how much did that dangerous man actually know and how much was mere guesswork?
After a short pause, the devious doctor let out a sigh filled with gray haze. "Fine. The truth then..." He was well aware of the irony in someone like him using the word so casually. Very few people could get anything even remotely close to that out of him directly. "In all honesty, this is more of a personal calling, really. I travel the world, seek out poor, unfortunate souls and offer them my services. Thus I ended up on Nanohana. People here desperately need someone to look after them, see?" He let his gaze wander among the dusty rabble, as if he actually cared about any of them.
Of course, the truth was very much the opposite. Recently the long claw of law had brushed a little too close for comfort, forcing the criminal to pull a hasty retreat from Pucci. Such a shame too. The Gourmet Island had proven to be full people with more riches than wits, not to even mention all the wonderful food. Still, this lovely arid island suited him fine as well. It was the perfect place to wait until the heat died down. None of that he would admit out loud, of course.

Re: [Episode] A perfectly good reason to panic.
Sun Jul 31, 2016 2:01 pm
Cold shivers crawled down the crook’s neck. His whole frame stiffened under the fear. He took a deeper drag of the soothing smoke, desperately trying to keep his fragile nerves together. Even still, he insisted on denying all the suspicions. "I’m afraid I have no idea what you are implying, friend..." He knew a threat when he heard one, but he couldn’t let that show. Otherwise he would be the one swindled, cheated and blackmailed. This vagrant couldn’t fool him with some half-hearted lecture. People... like the two of them for instance... were all the same, see? Rotten to the core.
Breathing out a long stream of gray, the criminal voiced his thoughts. "Riiiight... Because honesty has never backfired on anyone." He had seen enough of the world to know that honest citizens never got far. Prancing around spewing truths was just an invitation for a million knives on the back. "After all, it’s not like the world will somehow turn every fact, truth and grain knowledge against you." He aimed a knowing look at the large man, his words and his tone weaving two opposing stories. One had to merely glance between the lines. "The Government especially would never resort to such underhanded tactics." For a moment his smile sharpened and eyes gleamed, the kind of sly, devilish look of a man making a point.
"Wouldn’t you agree?"
When the strange traveler received the sudden call, the doctor paid close attention. Eavesdropping was a bad habit, perhaps, but also a handy one. Like right now he could glean out information regarding his patient. Every little detail helped narrow down the possibilities and save time on the scene. His gaze strayed onto the horizon, focusing at nothing in particular. Swirling, bubbling, like liquid in a flask, his thoughts ran in his mind. Hematemesis was a drastic symptom, highly lethal if left untreated, limiting causes to very specific syndromes, strains of virus, parasitic contagion... His eyes narrowed. ...or poison. He would know for sure when he saw the patient.
Snapping out of the medical mindset, the criminal blinked at the sudden change in plans. "...Pardon?" Dumbfounded, he caught the reins and watched his so-called partner-in-crime suddenly take off. For the record, he could’ve voiced a hundred reasons for why this was a terrible idea. Unfortunately there was no time for that and he had to either go with the flow or get caught in the chaos. The choice was obvious.
Richard just needed one look at the unsteady animal dripping drool to draw his conclusions. Considering their location, the obvious answer was stinging his nose even now. "Oh great... These dumb creatures have been sniffing far too much fragrance fumes... But I’m sure that won’t come back to bite us anytime soon..." He tossed his suitcase onto the beast’s back and wrapped some stray straps around the handle. In his haste, however, he secured the leather far too quickly and the suitcase slipped, slamming against the camel’s hide. The crook only managed to lift a brow as the tangled reins suddenly tightened around his arm. "What the-? BUWAAAARGHBLHBLHBLH!" Such was the majestic sound of a gentleman gracefully sliding across the sand as his brave steed charged forth towards a new adventure. Or something along those lines.
Through sheer stubborn will, the criminal managed to claw his way onto the saddle and grab the reigns properly. Spitting sand, he rattled out a rapid string of polite excuses. "Excuse me, pardon me, medical emergency, coming through!" It came out with perfect cadence, a collection he had practiced well in numerous escapes. Polite demeanor opened all sorts of paths. This particular one led to the docks and into the east. Eventually the wildly flailing animal caught up to the rider leading the way. The rat could only hang onto his hat and glare daggers at the vagrant.

Managing to somehow keep the dumb animal under control, Richard clung onto the reins for dear life. He had never been particularly fond of animals... Too loud and unpredictable... But this creature he couldn't wait to ditch. To distract himself from the unsteady ride, he directed his attention onto the symptoms described. Every detail he learned now would save him time later, see? Fatigue and jaundice were distinct symptoms, narrowing down the possibilities quite nicely. In fact... Colorful knowledge bubbled in imaginary flasks, flowing through transparent tubes and condensing into conclusions.
After listening to the description, the doctor let out a heavy sigh. He tugged the brim of his hat lower, hiding his eyes beneath a forlorn shadow. "I'm afraid I have some bad news for you, my friend..." His cheery demeanor dampened, weighed down by the most serious tone. "What you just described sounds an awful lot like golden beetle fever, a rare and terrible disease... If not properly treated, it will surely prove fatal..." His eyes wandered ahead, looking at nothing in particular, searching for the right words. "Worse yet, the medicine for it is incredibly difficult to come by and often valued higher than gold and gems." The silence that followed was heavy, uncomfortable.
Allowing Gray a moment to boil in despair, Richard then poked his hat back into proper angle. Again that thin, confident smile slowly found its way on his lips. "However... As a well-traveled and well-prepared man, I just so happen to have some in my person. I'm perfectly willing to part with it for a good cause..." And the right price of course. But that part was never said out loud, only implied. Bringing people's hopes down and then lifting them back up was all part of the routine at this point, the hook to keep them in his grip. After all, who could question his expertise? Challenge his lies? Who would deny the demands he made under the guise of saving lives? No one.
With a carefree wave of hand, the crook brushed the heavy mood aside. "We can discuss the costs later, no? Our first priority is getting your dear friend cured. Then we can see to my compensation. I’m sure you'll find the fee... reasonable~" There was perhaps a prefix missing there somewhere. As a doctor, Richard Maxwell knew the value of human life. Often down to a berry.
Giving the vagabond a chance to speak his mind, the criminal meanwhile placed yet another stick of vice between his teeth. The two previous ones had suffered unfortunate accidents... Such a waste. Just a couple clicks of the silver lighter and again streaks of smoke soothed his soul. The more he listened, the more he came to realize... "Conscience, eh?" ...this man had to be an utter moron. There was an obvious meaning to existence: money. Everything else was just means to that end. Still, he humored the hypocrite for the sake of conversation. "It's an admirable way of looking at life, I suppose. Many people would much rather take than give." After all, goodwill didn't hold back hunger.

Another deep breath spread the calming sensation. Richard’s smile thinned. This stranger knew too much already. But... The deal was still good. No need to bail out just yet. "Ah, I meant no disrespect, my friend." Ever so polite, so suave, he offered his almost genuine apologies. Well... It wasn’t entirely false. He still respected the fellow. In a way. Even if Mr. Yonko was so fond of spouting nonsense. "I simply see things, shall we say, from a different angle." He directed his gaze towards the horizon thoughtfully. "Besides... there is more to life than just money..." Like gems. Gems were nice.
The line of thought was cut short by a sudden curse. Eyes bulging and jaw dropping, the crook stared at the sudden pitfall that appeared from nowhere. The gawking cost him the cigarette, yet again. He yanked the animal to a sudden stop and nearly fell off. Slowly his head creaked towards his all too nonchalant companion. "...They?" The crook tentatively echoed the odd comment, dearly hoping this was just another bad joke. No such luck.
Richard was the kind of man who didn’t need to be told twice. By the time Gray finished his sentence, the rat was already scurrying onto a safer spot with the beloved suitcase in tow. The hows and whys of walking on thin air hardly mattered to him at the moment. He just wanted solid sand under his feet. Much to the criminal’s increasing horror, something then crawled out of the whole. Another ominous figure blocked the escape route too. Lovely. Absolutely wonderful. This couldn’t possibly get any worse.
During the exchange, the rat’s eyes darted back and forth, desperately seeking a way out. It was just a tad difficult to concentrate on anything over the sound of internal screaming. He thought he had heard the dreaded name of... C-c-cipher Pol... Just thinking it had him trying to swallow the nervous clump stuck in his throat. Of course he knew about them, the Government’s special agents, powerful teams numbered from one to eight. He had hoped to never run into them. But now they were here, no doubt to arrest his partner-in-cri... Wait... "Me?!" It just got worse. He recoiled from sheer disbelief. "Why me?!" Rhetorical question.
Richard inched closer to Gray, as if to hide in the vagabond’s shadow. Cold sweat ran down his brow. No matter how much he tugged the tie, it just felt suffocating at the moment. Carefully he cleared his throat and struggled to keep his voice from shaking. "Ahem... gentlemen... I am sure there is a peaceful solution here..." He lied through his teeth, merely hoping to buy more time. Every second was worth a fortune in situations like these. "Let’s just negotiate, eh?" If he could only get them to keep talking...

Before Richard could spout more lies, his so-called partner-in-crime almost left him speechless. Almost. "H-hey now, you’re not serious about this, are you?" If the bit about surrendering him to the agents was supposed to be a joke, he didn’t find it very funny. Even in the scorching heat, the droplets of fear felt icy running down his skin. "My God, you are serious...." What little foundation for trust the doctor may have formed towards the vagabond was crushed for good. He wanted to kick himself for letting his guard down. Such a rookie mistake. If he got out of this mess alive, he would be changing scenery faster than one could say turncoat...
The rat recoiled backwards while the two blockheads clashed. That left him with the... Blinking, the criminal glanced around rapidly. Wait, where did the other guy go? Barely had that line of thought finished, when a sudden sinkhole opened beneath his feet and two hands snapped towards his ankles. However, the criminal was swift on his feet. One hasty leap backwards got him out of reach. He had no intention to fight back properly, to reveal any of his cards, not unless he ran out of options. Or an opportunity presented itself... The less anyone knew about him, the easier it was to get underestimated. So far the government’s knowledge was horribly outdated and he planned to keep it that way.
Having missed the surprise attack, the snake-like agent popped to surface again. He kept a careful eye on his opponent, formulating some sort of plan. Knees shaking, hands trembling and jaw clattering, the not-so-fearsome pirate stared down the tricky enemy. "L-look, buddy, I have beaten people far stronger than you. If you run now... I... I’ll let you live. T-think it over." For a moment, the agent actually scratched his chin, as if to entertain the idea. Though just mockingly. "Hmmmmmm... no. I’ll take my chances." And back down the hole he went, much to the doctor’s dismay. The persistent types were the worst.
Richard’s gaze nervously swept the surface of the sand. Couldn’t let that guy get a drop on him a third time... Luckily, he was quite confident in his speed and reflexes. Playing keep away shouldn’t prove too difficult. There was just one tiny complication... The fruit. Every fruit user was a hundred times more troublesome than an average foe. There was no telling what weird powers they would use. This one seemed to dig... or open holes... And speak of the devil... Suddenly a series of openings dotted the ground around the crook. Yet the agent didn’t show himself. The cunning copper was trying to divide his attention, to keep him guessing...
Thoughts bubbled in the imaginary flask, already formulating a retaliation plan. Yes... This would require a careful and deliberate... boot to the head. Just as the agent peeked out again, he faced exactly that, a stomp in the face. He hissed something akin to a curse under his breath and withdrew back into hiding. The next three attempts were much the same, the criminal being just slightly faster with his reactions. It was like watching a bizarre game of whack-a-mole. Or would that be whack-a-snake?
However, no streak would last forever. Wizened -and probably annoyed- by the repeated kicks, the Snake slipped past the criminal’s guard and finally got him by the throat. Richard wheezed within the grip. He put up a fierce struggle, but the agent kept overpowering him, slowly, effortlessly, enjoying the futile resistance. If the vagabond didn’t help the doctor, he would’ve been dragged underground sooner rather than later. Or so it seemed at first glance. While putting up the show of desperate flailing, the rat dropped his suitcase and slyly reached for his pocket. If his 'friend' didn’t intervene soon enough, or at all, there was always plan B...

The world was turning blurry at the same rate as air was running low. Much to the criminal’s increasing dismay, it really did seem he was on his own here. Not that he was surprised, mind you. Plan B it was then. And B stood for 'Business as usual'. [Sucker Punch] Without wasting another moment, he threw a sudden jab at the agent’s hide. No amount of training could harden certain weak spots, like say, the kidneys for instance. The sucker never saw it coming. His yelp was an equal mix of pain and surprise as his grip loosened just enough. Richard was free.
...And feeling rather vengeful.
While the snake reeled, the rat revealed his second trick. A suspicious syringe shined between his fingers, filled with distinct lavender liquid. [Euthanasia] Remorselessly he drove the large needle into his foe’s neck, right into an artery. The violet venom vanished into the bloodstream with a single, satisfying press. And just as swiftly, violently, he tore it away, leaving behind a badly bleeding wound. He didn’t need the scream to know how much that had to hurt. Normal folks would’ve been on the verge of death right about now. But since when had government agents been normal?
For good measure, the crook gave the stunned agent a solid kick in the gut before snatching his suitcase and scurrying away. Admittedly with his strength it was merely insult to injury, but he was an opportunist. Now, he was back to playing keep away. Although... Looking at the enemy squirm, the doctor couldn’t stop the dark glee that was condensing deep inside, running through the mental funnels and dripping into his smile. His victory was already assured, wasn’t it? Yes... Anything beyond this was just a formality, the final part of their little song and dance. Thus he could finally afford to relax. Even the fearsome Cipher Pol was no match for Doctor Richard Maxwell!
The criminal idly dusted his clothes. "Well then, I think we are done here." He glanced towards the two other fighters and tugged the brim of his hat lower. "As much as I’d love to stay and chat, I really must be going." Preferably somewhere far, far away. This island was no longer safe. And following Mr. 'Don’t count on my help' was rapidly losing its appeal.
